Since I was one who had concerns about last night's attendance and have already been labeled as a "Doom and Gloomer", I'll go ahead and point out the obvious; there's absolutely no way there were 25,000 people there. The East side was barely half full and there were large areas of empty seats in the West stands.

The student turnout was fantastic.

If that was the case, then good job students!
That is true. As I was heading for concessions at about the 10 min mark pre game the usher in the 203/204 section was telling students to turn around unless they had a seat already. I don't know if she was able to remember faces leaving and then returning or what, but she was turning away people. Also I don't know if the ushers were counting heads with a clicker and/or capped the numbers in that section to smaller than years past. I would assume the same attendance cap as in years past and it was a visual look to note the student seating was full.

What I do know is the usher was turning them away, and with a polite tone at that.

My daughter is not much of a sports person really. I think she will help with baseball attendance, but not so much for the gameplay. I was surprised how eager she was for the game.

She went with a group from her dorm floor and they arrived right at 4:00 and was able to get about 4-5 rows back near the 50.

We had planned to take her shopping for a coat in Blowing Rock and kill a bit of time but she told us she had to get back to White Hall so her group could be at the stadium at 4. I think we spent about 90 min with her. Just enough time to get her a meal and buy a bit of groceries. She was more interested in getting to the game.

it's like that every week. we're in 204 as well and I always see some students get turned away when we're going to our seats ~45 min before kickoff.

if they wanna get the prime seats, you gotta suck it up and wait at the gate like we did when i was a student :D

I thought it was a very good crowd considering the weather. Everyone from out of town was expecting the worst and could have backed out but but most still came.

I think they let (or it did anyway) the tailgating go on a little later because the seats seemed to be filling up through the 1st QTR. I notice there wasn't anyone on the hill at first but then it became quite full.

People started leaving in groves before and during the half but that can be expected considering the score. Then the rain delay happened and some thought it was over and others just left.

If the 30k - 35k numbers can be believed I think the official totals were pretty close.

We got to our seats about 30 minutes before kickoff and the stadium appeared 3/4ths empty except or the student section which was already packs and rockin'. The crowd was late arriving but did fill up a lot of The Rock by the end of the 1st quarter.

Great job by the students and the band sounded great!

They were also tearing the tickets... Not a real scientific way to count heads...

It is tickets sold plus students, this is the way it has been for almost 10 years.

I think Veg is just having a hard time facing the reality of it all. Despite everything working against us last week we still had over 25K pay for tickets which is right in line with the past few years. so much for the doom and gloom!

I don't expect to see him post when we approach 30,000 against USA. He reserves the right to say I told you so, but turns tail and disappears when his contemptuous predictions don't come true.

I wish there was a way to get a better count of the actual attendance. The scanners are okay if they use them, but they were just tearing tickets on Saturday. I know it is the number of tickets sold plus student attendance that is announced, but that seems a bit fake to me. Yes, we got the money from the ticket whether the seat was occupied or not, but I'm reminded of the schools that used to get corporate donors to buy the seats and announce an attendance of 30,000 for a game that had 1500 people in the stands. That seems disingenuous to me, and I don't like it. That's why I pointed out that there is no way there were actually 25,000 people there; not because I have some desire to see us have poor attendance.

Saying all that, I actually thought we had a good actual crowd Saturday given the gloomy weather forecast.

I came in the West gate about 30 minutes before kickoff and my ticket (printed on 8.5x11) was scanned.

I came in the west gates about 30 minutes prior to kickoff and my ticket was torn. I had an actual ticket, not one printed online. I am not sure why both types weren't scanned. :?

As for attendance, I thought it was excellent, and I did not have any reason to doubt the 25k number...seemed close to me.

I agree. The 25K number was on the money. For a threatening day we had "I think" a great crowd. For the first half the bank was crowded. The students on the west side sounded great! And, the BOD looked and sounded fabulous! Overall, the stadium looked great for our home opener.

There was a lot of things going against this game and I'm pretty proud of the folks that still showed up. I know it was touch and go with most of my party until they finally decided to make it an evening.

Still hesitant to guesstimate future games over 25,000 and I think we'll be fortunate to hit over 30,000 this year unless we start winning again.

My ticket (a real ticket) was scanned at the East Gate. These scanners can be finicky which is why it is just easier to use tickets sold plus students.

I hope we all agree that App State put together a good game day experience for our opening game. Even with the gloomy weather, the fans seemed pumped. I tailgated at the Library parking lot. I arrived at 2pm and had plenty of spaces to choose from, but by 4pm the parking deck was full to the extent that the attendants were making the few tailgaters that occupied two spaces to give up that extra space to accommodate the late arrivals. Walking the town and campus the tailgating was going strong, even in the sporatic drizzle. We entered the KBS around 5pm to watch the BoD march in. I tell ya, I think that they looked bigger than last year, boy, did they show "high energy." The stadium looked pretty empty initially, but as we got closer to kick-off the fans started to pour in. The bank and the endzone bleachers filled up with students. I noticed that the cheerleaders included a lot more men this year. That's great! After each touchdown, the guys carried the APP STATE flags across the endzones with good speed and strength. The dancing group looked bigger too. From this narrative, you can tell I had a great time!
