Fair question, though as others have said, I think we have a reasonable shot of competing in one or both games, especially Miami at home. No way to know where they'll be next September (I actually wish they'd kept Golden now), but if the game were played at KBS this Saturday, I bet we'd be a single-digit underdog.

And if we do start 1-2, I don't think it will be terribly damaging. Look at Bowling Green - they started 1-2 this year with losses to Tennessee and Memphis; now they're 7-2 and probably on their way to the MAC title game.

Gotta take the long view - this game would be a landmark for fan interest, and I'm sure we'll bring in every recruit we can find to see an incredible atmosphere.

I believe originally we were scheduled to play UMass on 9/17.

Have to wonder if any of those fans have been looking at how the CFP treats G5 teams last year and the first poll this year. They don't care if you're unbeaten unless you've beaten power conference teams, and good ones at that.

We weren't getting the access bowl next year anyway unless we went 12-0. Now, we might at least have a shot if we went 11-1.

Marshall was unbeaten until the last game last year and barely cracked the CFP top 25.

Houston is 8-0 with wins over Louisville and Vandy and is only #25 in the first poll.

The Sun Belt isn't going to help anyone's SoS for the foreseeable future. The only chance a Sun Belt team has at the access bowl is to pull off at least one big OOC win.

Miami or NCCU?? Hmmm. I still remember the feeling I had sitting in the stadium watching us play Lenoir-Rhyne the week after Michigan. What a letdown that was, and we were "only FCS". Who exactly do some of the naysayers want us to play at home. I agree, the ONLY shot we will have at the Access Bowl is to knock off probably two decent P5 schools and have the Sunbelt rise to some level of competitiveness. Doesn't our conference schedule potentially take a downward turn next season? Won't we get NMSU, Texas State?

"Losing two games could knock us out of contention for a NY6 bowl"......I thought goal #1 is to win our conference. Win the Sunbelt and a bowl game is guaranteed.

To quote Jerry Moore: Any team. Any place. Any time.

If we're good enough to be in a New Year's Bowl we'll be able to handle Miami next season.

Bring it on!

This will be a true test of where we stand outside of the Sun Belt conference. The cake OOC schedule was nice this year, and love that it meant we only had to win 3 conference games to make a bowl. But, we finish 11-1 this year, it's time to show our talents against better competition.

Neither game would be easy, but it would be best for our program. Look at it this way. We go 10-2 with Miami and Tennessee on the schedule, would probably give us the same bowl as if we went 11-1 with Wyoming and ODU on the schedule. However, if we can pull off the win, that 12-0 is a lot more appealing than a 12-0 with weak competition. Two of our four OOC games would be against P5 schools.

I hope this becomes a reality. Would do wonders for the program.

For our program to move up in stature we must start scheduling tougher competition and winning against those opponents. Right now by most rankings and polls we are in the 30-50 range for overall FBS. Tennessee and Miami are also in that general vicinity. We will be returning most of our players next year so it would only be natural to think we should be as good if not better next year. If you want to be recognized (And we do) with top 25 crowd then we have to start knocking down some of those teams. We aspire to be the next Boise St, well this is how they did it. There is no reason why we can't either. Why would any of our fans be afraid of or want to avoid better competition, especially at home?

Let's be a Boisie State but only if we can maintain our higher academic standards.

Yep, I'd like to catch a brand name on their down year, how many years was UT down before now? We have been spanked good since the Michigan game, however team is better overall now. Maybe we have a better showing in Knoxville?

They are saying embarrassing to play us. I'd like to log on and ask what the hell is going to Duke and Wake? We have a lot better football atmosphere in Boone than Durham and Winston-Salem. What an ignorant lot.

For every "embarrassing" comment there's another poster talking about how great our gameday atmosphere is, and how great spending time in Boone can be. There's even a mention of our good lookin' ladies.

I liked this one:
We lost to Clemson 58-0, they lost 41-10... Would we lose to App St if we played this year?

Yes, the thread on the Miami message board started off with the "embarrassing" comment. But, probably slightly over half of the posters only objected to playing App 1st on a home & home or pointed out that we weren't a cupcake. Sort of a left-handed compliment. The other Miami posters pretty much think little of their current administration.

Clearly, this could be a huge opportunity for App State football to make a statement.

Big time. Of course, we could also get hammered. We are going to win these type games, sooner or later. Might as well be sooner.

I will be there.

In The Longest Yard, Paul Crewe said that his alma mater, Miami, always scheduled "Appalachian State or some slack division two school." Funny how everything works out, isn't it?
