Saw him as well and he looked every bit 6'5. HUGE pickup for us. Gives us 3 WR 6'1+ now counting Malachi and MeadorsASUchipman wrote:I saw Eaton when he visited App. I thought he looked taller than 6'4". I told everyone in my family we needed to make him a priority. This is really good news.

Ah yes, Pascagoula, Mississippi. Close to where I attended Air Force Tech School back in 75, at good ol Keesler Air Force Base. Ah memories!firemoose wrote:YES!!! Sorry guys but very slow internet tonight. But as you've seen WR Matthew Eaton (6′ 4″ 195) of Pascagoula High School in Pascagoula, MS has committed to App State tonight. We have the tall WR we've been pushing for all season. I will move him to the committed section in a few minutes. Another great pickup for the staff. Congrats to them for all their hard work.

After their school formally warned their fans from doing the same thing, an ASU poster on SunBeltBBS is now crying foul since we landed Eaton.

I love these additions. These are very talented players who will bring a lot to the team, but more importantly it seems like everyone of these kids has high GPA and SAT scores.
After having some players leave the team for off field issues the last few years, it seems to me the coaches have placed an emphasis on high character players. I could just be reading into it too much though.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Found a workout video on Eaton.
Very impressive for a 6'5 guy. Also a nice set of soft hands. You can tell by the video he has done the drills many times which make him a hard worker in my book.

Watching Eaton's video makes me drool. He has excellent hands and really knows how to go up and high point the football, plus he is a nasty blocker. His film is very nice to watch and he is every bit of 6'5.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Very Impressive footwork, in watching highlight videos it seems that he isn't as fast as Quick or Price, but I think he is quicker than both. I think there is a ton of room for him to grow as a player as he is a natural hands catcher and does a good job of locating and adjusting his hands to where the ball is.ASUPATCH wrote:Found a workout video on Eaton.

I also think Eaton will be able to run more routes than we saw from both Quick and Price early on because he has such quick feet. He reminds me a bit of AJ Green at UGA in how he is quick enough to release inside or out off the line, and still get seperation because of his size.

Awesome to see us loading up on WRs after the group we lost this past season. Sounds like these guys are seeing the opportunity that's available and eager to jump on it.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
The three pickups this week have made the two losses of last week a distant memory. The staff is doing an outstanding job coming together to show these recruits how committed we are to them. Stepp seems to be leading the charge on a lot of these players. That guy needs a raise ASAP!

I agree, JT. I think we got a winner, and I hope he stays in Boone for a while. I continue to hear very positive comments about him from current players, recruits, fellow coaches and fans.JTApps1 wrote:The three pickups this week have made the two losses of last week a distant memory. Re: Recruiting, 2014
Just a little info on the WR's.
Currently we have on the roster; (All heights and weights are as of last reported. For current players that's July 2013. For commits that's as of the start of their senior seasons or whenever I added them to the list)
Trey Anderson 5’ 10” 185 Fr
Bobo Beathard 5’ 10” 191 Jr
Jaquil Capel 5’ 11” 190 So
Dante Jones 5’ 11” 180 Fr
Malachi Jones 6’ 1” 180 Jr
Trey Kavanaugh 6’ 1” 180 Jr
Simms McElfresh 5’ 10” 173 Jr
Tacoi Sumler 5’ 9” 173 Jr
If we sign all commits so far and McGuire gets his class completed:
Deltron Hopkins 5’ 8” 160
Montez McGuire 6’ 1” 212
Shaedon Meadors 6’ 2” 180
Nikia Cathey(ATH) 5’ 8” 175
Pretty good mix of field stretching burners, slot, possession, multi-purpose all around's, and finally our big target (Not anymore, at least for now). We also have 5 TE's on the current roster, all 6' 1" through 6' 4" with commit Brandon Walton coming in at nearly 6' 6".
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Malachi can do as the primary and what Dante Jones, Capel, and Sumler (hoping his rehab is complete and he's back to 100%) are going to bring to the current group. And it goes without saying that we're all excited to see what our commits can do once we get them here. Receiver looking pretty good.
EDIT: To remove Eaton who has de-committed to rethink his decision.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
One thing I note looking at the WR list is that everyone on the current roster weighs 190 or less. By contrast, McGuire has at least 20 lbs. on them all, and Eaton and Meadors seem like they have the frames to add a lot of muscle also. There's always room for small, fast guys of course, but it seems like the staff has made a concerted effort to add some guys who'll be able to break away from a jam if teams play us tight. Have to like the versatility.

Re: Recruiting, 2014
Agreed. I did put the part about the weights being as of July 2013 for that reason. From what I'm hearing several of the receivers have added weight. Even some of the commits are a little bigger than when they started their last HS seasons. We won't truly know until the new roster is released in July but I expect most of them to have more weight.EastHallApp wrote:One thing I note looking at the WR list is that everyone on the current roster weighs 190 or less. Re: Recruiting, 2014
Question for you guys and off topic...I read alot of message boards and was over on the GUS board looking that their recruiting. They seem to think that we (app football) pay the rivals and 247,et al, sites. I know I pay a subscription, but I do not think that the athletic dept. pays them to scout. Right, wrong, what's the deal on that for those of you in the know?
