I wonder what the line would be if this were at UNC? Maybe 6-8 points? It will be interesting to see what happens because they certainly do have all the stars. The thing people overlook is that top tier P5 recruits get a bump over average P5 school commits and the average/low level P5 commits get a rating bump over G5 commits. I guess we will find out how accurate the stars are for both teams in a couple weeks!MrCraig wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 9:13 amThe folks in Vegas are more often right than wrong, and they have Carolina as a 2 point favorite, which is basically a toss up.
Sure, UNC's got all kinds of stars next to their recruits, but "Mr. Football" has almost always underperformed when having loads of talent.
I don't care who they send out there, Carolina ain't got that dawg in 'em.

If you were to use ESPN's SP+ (not saying it is the way to go, just using it as an example)AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 10:36 amI wonder what the line would be if this were at UNC? UNC-Cheat is a 9.4
App State is a 4.1
Adding 3 for the home team:
UNC-CH would be a 2.3 point favorite at KBS
UNC-CH would be a 5.3 point favorite at a neutral site
UNC-CH would be an 8.3 point favorite in the quite confines of Kenan. (IMO, they should probably only get +2 at home, since it is Kenan, so it should be 7.3)

Big game for coach Clark coming off of the contract extension. As a head coach, Clark is 2-7 in games where App is favored by 7 points or less. That is not a good track record. Needs to get a big one under his belt.

Re: UNC game discussion
I assume the "less" includes games in which App isn't favored.
On the flip side, through two years we're been 7+ point favorites in 16 games.

It'll be interesting to see if NIL money impacts a bunch of 19 year old's work ethics and ability to respond to adversity. I'm not as hungry now that I've got a few dollars in the bank as I was when I still needed to earn it. Hungry Mike would kick the current Mike's a$$. Will NIL soften them up?

I've wondered that myself. In addition to not being as "hungry;" having a lot of money suddenly can also create distractions that weren't there before.mike87 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 12:33 pmIt'll be interesting to see if NIL money impacts a bunch of 19 year old's work ethics and ability to respond to adversity. Is being an underdog in the same category as being favored by 7 points or less?

But they don’t have the distraction of worrying about not having money to take a girl a date, etc. Pluses and minuses with it.Rick83 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 12:36 pmI've wondered that myself. Yeah, not talking about the guys getting paid. There's no distraction there and no issues for me. I'm talking about the guys getting PAID. There's gotta be some fall-off.BayouApp wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 1:24 pmBut they don’t have the distraction of worrying about not having money to take a girl a date, etc. Pluses and minuses with it.Rick83 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 12:36 pmI've wondered that myself. Re: UNC game discussion
Brand new QB..Another Maye in the Hill..never played a down of college FB (do not believe he played at all last year)
Josh Downs is a damn good receiver
Rest of WRs not significant experience
OL should be better than last year with the transfers (horrible last year)
Young RBs but the starter Jones has had some playing time. Freshman RBs will be good in time if not already
DL may be UNC strength with the depth overall...not saying they have all-americans..they finally have depth
LBs may be weakest link on defense
Some experience in secondary but not sold on this area of defense especially if Duck is not fully healthy.
App. St. wins!!!

Re: UNC game discussion
My biggest concerns for us in this game, and season, are threefold. One, whether our new fairly inexperienced DL rotation can get consistent pressure in the backfield. and specifically on the QBs. Two, whether our new very inexperienced WR group can make consistent plays (including appropriate blocking). Three, whether our fairly thin in experience (outside the starters) DBs can play up to the standard at App. I really think those 3 position groups will dictate how successful we are against UNC and what kind of season we are going to have. If at least 2 of those 3 groups perform in a consistent manner with what we have come to expect from those position groups then we should beat UNC and have a really good year, if not the wheels may come off early.

I'll add ST to that. Staton had a very good year. I never felt nervous when Henni or Malik settled under a punt but have no idea who the PR is. Virgil was always a threat to take it to the house on kickoffs and not sure who th KRs are either.t4pizza wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 5:34 pmMy biggest concerns for us in this game, and season, are threefold. Hughes is still working on consistency but he can split the uprights from 55+.postalapp90 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 5:54 pmI'll add ST to that. Staton had a very good year.
