Antlers was open but beer was "bootleg"
The date of August '65 sticks in my brain. I was a senior at ASU and could buy beer legally in Blowing Rock for the first time. My friends and I could enjoy an evening at Antlers and not have to look over our shoulders for undercover ATF agents. We did have to be careful about the drive back to Boone. The owner of PB Scott's was later quoted to have said that the arrest of impaired drivers on Blowing Rock Road was like shooting fish in a barrel for the NC Highway Patrol. I had the good fortune of never being stopped and never being involved in a wreck. Many, many were, however.
Antlers still survives--although under different ownership. Bistro Roca and Antlers Bar--still located near the lake on Wonderland Trail in Blowing Rock. The place has great reviews; but its lost the "ambience" of the 60s-70s-80s college bar. RIP: Old Antlers

It was still shooting fish in a barrel when I was there in the mid 2000s. That 2AM drive became the "Blowing Rock Mile" after several late night viewings of Black Hawk Dawn. Liquor by the drink, for all of its benefits, has robbed younger generations of that rite of passage undertaken on 21st bdays and special occassions. Bistro Roca had very much changed evidently though. Was my favorite "nice spot" to take a date you were trying to impress.

Still have my Antlers softball shirt. Mr. Eisenhower (sp?) sponsored our intramural team aka The Chinese Bandits. We would go to Antlers after games and slide into the bar.

You couldn't buy beer or liquor in Blowing Rock? Man, that would have really sucked.
No beer in Blowing Rock (only "bootleg") in the early 60's. Nearest place to get beer was Joe's Place at the Wilkes/Watauga line!!!! Think about it my YOUNG friends.
There aren't many of us around who remember the infamous Joe's Friendly Tavern--just across the Watauga-Wilkes county line on the east end of the concrete arch bridge on old 421.

Chuck; I remember Joe's owned by EJ Trivett. He ran a chevy in the early NASCAR days. He had beer coolers on the back of his flat bed truck and pulled his race car on a trailer. When his car gave out in the race he sold beer from his truck in the infield. I was a non drinker and had a car. Football players got me to drive them to Joe's and back. Some great stories I can't tell on a family blog.

To this day I stand by my statement:
"If they had beer in Boone while I was in school, I never would
have graduated"

All of our local breweries are on board, just waiting on Beasley and the Board to process the proposal. Should happen by the end of January. I'll update when I find out more.
Thanks to all of you for your input. Much appreciated.
Who all has to approve this? ---
The AD's office, the Chancellor's office, the BOT and the UNC BOG would have to make a new rule allowing alcohol sales in on-campus stadiums, which would probably open the door for all UNC campuses to sell alcohol at football, basketball and baseball games. It would probably be akin to invading Russia to get this done.
This is something that might need support from other campuses.

Oliver Luck is a smart guy and figured he could turn a good profit rangling $8 a beer out of those hillbillies. I don't think our mountain folk will be any different. We like to drink and watch football. Incidently, I don't think anyone has died during one of their football game since beer sales started.
With regards to safety issues, I think stadium sales might cut down on the level of drunkeness of fans entering the stadium. I understand many on this board don't drink or only have a few. However, this is Appalachian and the reality is that many fans drink early and often on game day. Most students, and a lot of alumni, drink to excess in order to have a sustained buzz throughout the game. This leads to all sorts of public intoxication problems in the early stages of a contest. However, knowing that you can get a beer upon entering KBS might slow the the pregame binge drinking. I think a high dollar price point is going to handcuff people who would look to abuse in game beers and drive down the mountain hammered. Sure there is always the possibility that someone won't mind shelling out 70 bucks to get lit and then gets behind the wheel. But guess what, that person is already drinking Jameson in their morning coffee, beer at tailgate, and Canadian Club mini bottles in a KBS bathroom stall.
We need revenue, and this is one way to get it. Bottom line is that if a Baptist school like Wake is able to pull this off, no reason why we shouldnt be just fine.
have to remember a large portion of the students won't be able to purchase beer in the stadium anyways.
for some that said fans should be able to leave the stadium at halftime then come back in - AWFUL idea!!!! TERRIBLE. NC State does it and Dave Doeren hates it. The stadium sometimes looks empty for a significant portion of the third quarter. Fans need to be in there making noise helping the team win. That is an awful idea.

I remember, back in the day we used to get our beer at the county line, then hit the overlooks on the Parkway. Best parties around were at Raven's Rock Overlook. Hah, high school days. That's right, high school!!

After 2AM from Blowing Rock we took Winklers Creek Road, then hit Snaggy Moutain Road over to 105, then Hodges Gap Road to 421 and came in from the west. Never got caught.
