My legitimate concern: Miami exposed a huge weakness on our defense
Anyone else worried about this? Early in the game especially they ran an offense so quick our defense looked totally lost. A lot of the time they simply ran screens, they were throws I think about any of us could have made, but our defense was still looking at the sidelines or making substitutions as they were snapping the ball. Miami would gain about 7-8 yards every time and just waltzed down the field. I do think we adjusted and it showed in the second quarter, we did something to slow them down. However this forced us to press our DB's more and that might be why Kaaya beat us deep a few times. But that's okay, we won't see a team that fast with a QB that good the rest of the year. So how does this relate to Akron? I admittedly know very little about their offensive style and what they run, but I do know they scored 65 points last week against a team that's been good recently. Their offensive coaches are probably licking their chops watching film of our defense looking lost in sped up offenses. Woody is a fantastic d coordinator and I know he'll adjust properly, he just needs to do it soon if we don't want to go into conference play 1-3.

This is a huge concern. Woody is a great defense of Cordinator, but he has never proven to stop a fast-paced offense. See Troy last year, liberty the year before and even when he was at Wofford he could not stop app when they went fast.

Yeah my dad and I have been saying for the past few years it seems to take our defense WAY longer to get plays in than really any other team we watch. And normally that's fine, but when teams go fast we just look lost and clueless. Has to figure something out.boonetown1 wrote:This is a huge concern. Don't we typically try to run a fast paced offense ourselves? If so, wouldn't we have to defend it to an extent in practice?
Re: My legitimate concern: Miami exposed a huge weakness on our defense
I think ODU actually exposed it.. Miami blew up the door and then bulldozed the building...

This has been an issue for years. We dominated Ark St. last year until the second half when they ran past us as we stood waiting for the D call. Only reason we seemed to adjust Saturday was because they slowed down.

Arkansas state did it some last year, and early in the Tennessee game, they ran it. Not sure why they got away from it, because in every instance, we have been unable to adjust and stop it. Surely we can have some default defensive set to go to when there is no time to get a defensive play callednin

How did ODU show the world??? They had 169 total yards passing with 0 TDs and they were behind the entire game...Rekdiver wrote:Yep our secondary is ou Achilles heel. ODU showed the world.

Yeah I'm laughing at those posts. ODU absolutely torched us for what 7 points? Good lord.WVAPPeer wrote:How did ODU show the world??? They had 169 total yards passing with 0 TDs and they were behind the entire game...Rekdiver wrote:Yep our secondary is ou Achilles heel. ODU showed the world.
Re: My legitimate concern: Miami exposed a huge weakness on our defense
ODU showed the strategy... not the execution. Had the QB had time he could've thrown quite a bit more. It just so happened that Miami had the line to protect an NFL-caliber QB.bigdaddyg wrote:Yeah I'm laughing at those posts. ODU absolutely torched us for what 7 points? Come on, if any decent college QB has time he will find open receivers. That's the key, don't give them time...

Out coached. Period. We'd better make adjustments. Get in plays faster!

It's not like the dude sat in the pocket and picked us apart! He had gloves on both hands, scrambled around and hit some passes. Our strength is run defense. The only chance ODU had was to hit some passes. They had the one TD drive and the second half looked like a boring ass scrimmage. They didn't expose anything. Miami has superior speed and a legit pro type QB. They showed the world that we are not a top 20 team yet.

Re: My legitimate concern: Miami exposed a huge weakness on our defense
My bigger question is why don't we run more hurry up? It was extremely effective when we did it in the past. Satterfield was even a part of those teams. We actually would run those bubble screens off of it as well.
I also don't understand why we don't recruit dual threat QBs anymore to allow us more read options...That's my biggest head scratcher. Don't expect a conversation about it, but it's something I've wondered over recent years.

We were not prepared mentally last week as I rewatch the game, so many mental breakdowns in coverage and drops. This may sound negative but it is actually encouraging as we can mentally prepare better rather than worry if we have the talent to perform. Let's get back on track this week.

Didn't Satt advocate going fast a few years ago? Maybe I'm thinking back to when he came back as OC/associate HC. Why not just huddle up if you are going to do everything at the line and let the other defense readjust?/\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:My bigger question is why don't we run more hurry up? We have signed a couple recently in Daniel David and Zac Thomas. But we aren't signing athletes and sorting them out into QBs and other once they get here like we used to./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:My bigger question is why don't we run more hurry up? I think that's fine, I just wonder if it will eventually result in a slightly less run-heavy offense. Not that I dislike our offense now - it's worked really well for the most part. Just wonder what the long-term design is.
ETA: I forgot Jake Easter, who actually *is* more in the QB/ATH category. So we've signed three dual threats in the past two classes, it's just that one transferred and the other two aren't ready to play.

We definitely are a run-heavy team, but I don't think that will be an every year thing. We've been run heavy the past few years because we've had the most depth at running back we've ever had, and we're just playing to our strengths. Think this is simply a product of us coaching to the personnel on the roster.EastHallApp wrote:We have signed a couple recently in Daniel David and Zac Thomas.
