Hudspeth blames all his Cajun woes on App State

Unread post by T-Dog » Tue Oct 11, 2016 5:22 am

The title is not a joke.

http://www.theadvertiser.com/story/spor ... /91852336/
From coach Mark Hudspeth’s seat, much of it started with a 2014 loss to the Cajuns’ next opponent – Appalachian State.

“I sort of attribute our sort-of slide to that game when we played them at home two years ago,” he said. “We came into that game, we were rolling. I think we were pretty hot at the time.”

...

But an ensuing 42-23 win over Troy was somewhat lackluster, and a season-ending 16-3 New Orleans Bowl victories over Nevada was no easy chore.

Still, especially considering the two wins that followed, one might wonder how exactly the loss to Appalachian State late in one season impacted what happened in the next.

Hudspeth essentially was asked just that after his initial assertion that there was a carryover effect.

“At that time we were on a six-game win streak,” he said, “and felt like that was one we could get.

“We would have finished with a 10-win season that year. But they come in here, and get after us at our place, and I didn’t do a good job getting us prepared. And, you know, we didn’t really respond well the next year from that.

“We knew going into last year that it was somewhat of a rebuilding year,” Hudspeth added. “But that was a tough loss … at home, when it was their first year in the (Sun Belt) conference.”

He does show some respect. But I guess we killed two programs, UM and LaLa.

“They’ve got a great fan base, and a nice stadium,” Hudspeth said. “They’re doing some good things.
“They’ve got a lot of tradition there, and they feed off that tradition, and they’re doing really good. They’ve got some outstanding backs (Cox is still there), a leader at quarterback (Lamb) and a really good defense that flies around the football.

Sounds to me like a coach that's desperately trying to find something, ANYTHING, to motivate his troops. It's quite a stretch. If a loss to us or anyone, started a two year slide, that was a pretty fragile program. And was does that say about his players and his coaching? I don't buy it.

With the departure of Les Miles, he should be actively pursuing potential transfers from LSU. It's hard to recruit in that part of the nation.

Yeah he could do what Akron has done. Grab a bunch of P5 "studs" and become a powerhouse...or not.

Where did I say they would become a powerhouse? Since you mentioned Akron though, they've become a much better team recently due in large part to the transfers they received. There are many examples of how P5 transfers didn't pan out (Look no further than App State's history) but there are also many success stories. It's risky, but so is taking a chance on a high school kid.

If I recall he was not very complimentary of us joining the SB. So what he is saying is he lost to an FCS transition team and it was an embarrassment.

I was being sarcastic. Akron is better but if the many transfers they got were all legit P5 kids the team would be REALLY good.

Hard to detect sarcasm on here. I am glad we are not transfer happy though.

Regardless of how Hudspeth felt about App initially, he seems to be giving us some compliments now. That said, these comments were very poorly thought out and just come across as whining to me. A good coach takes ownership and motivates his team to move past a set back...even if it was "embarrassing" (Liberty loss for example).

Let's see App put together a complete game tomorrow night and really give Hud something to complain about.

Mark Hudspeth whining? No way. He has easily become one of the easier coaches to dislike. It is or never will be Mark's fault.

Now I'm confused. Do they suck because we blew them out, or because their facilities are too nice?

Are we certain this isn't from theonion.com? This guy's a real jokester...I'm right there with the reporter when he said, "Half of me can’t believe I’m writing this, because I’d much rather have someone speak from the heart. In this age of sound bites and coachspeak, straight talk quenches my journalistic thirst." I can't believe the coach, albeit in the heat of the moment, made such an asinine comment. If I was on that team I'd be looking to transfer how could you take a coach seriously that uses lame brain excuses?

This is the same coach that complained about how difficult it was to going to be to get his team to Boone for last year. IRC, I think a bear broke into their campsite in the Linville Gorge and ran off their mules. They ended up having to ride a bus for like 20 minutes or something. It was turrible.

“Ever since then they’ve kind of been up, and we’ve been at the bottom,” Hudspeth added. “So we really want this game. We really want a win this time around.”

What Hud really wants is a tighter shirt! Folks fail to see Hud's long game here. A tighter shirt cuts off the oxygen supply to Hud's brain which allows him to come up with all these great excuses as to why he's being overpaid by the Ragin Cajun faithful. The less oxygen, the greater the excuse.

For $950k a year, he better get his Peppers back to competing for conference titles or he could see the heat on his seat go from jalapeno pepper to Carolina Reaper real quick.

Carolina Reaper liquid concentrate kind of hot. Good for what ails ya'. Use it and nothing will be ailing you again, ever.....

Meh, even without Les Miles, LSU is probably going to continue to be a strong, bowl-eligible team so I can't really see anyone jumping off that ship and heading to a Sunbelt team unless they have like a sick parent in Lafayette that they want to be close to or some extreme circumstance.

One problem both ULL and ULM are probably dealing with is the fiscal state of Louisiana as a whole. I'm not sure if that affects their on-field product but I'm sure they're feeling some sort of pinch.
