Game Filming

Does anyone know how games are recorded by the athletic staff these days now that 16mm and video taping (VHS) have become obsolete? If it's digital, as I assume, is there a compatibility issue in exchanging recordings?

I imagine it is digital and this would make exchange MUCH easier. If someone recorded in one of the many video codecs and wrappers that another school did not use there are numerous conversion programs around to take care of that issue, and many of these conversions are Free and Open Source at that.

Record it on various cameras, encrypt and upload each camera file to something like Google Drive or Dropbox (or other cloud services) and share the password for the encrypted file. Done. Higher quality than VHS and sooooo much easier than processing 16 mm and sending through the mail.

Also with so many games on TV or streaming one could do all sorts of things on one's own to get some level of game footage without the assistance of another school.

Can you say "Hudl". I would think this is what is used. This is the way that most high school recruits send in their games for viewing. It is digital.

The problem with network broadcasts of games is that they spend so much time showing individual players rather than the overall formations on the field.

Sure, but in a pinch it is video, though as you stated and I was implying it would be of lesser quality than what could be acquired directly from schools.

I use Hudl/Technique in Physics class for easy slow motion studies with the student's smartphones.
