Great pub for Coach Satterfield ---

not so much for those who want him to stay a while longer ---
"Scott Satterfield, Appalachian State
A big checkmark in many ADs’ books: Satterfield has maintained steady program growth during the transition from FCS to FBS — and he’s done it on the heels of Hall of Famer Jerry Moore’s success at the school. Not everyone pulls off those feats.
The Mountaineers are 21-5 in the past two seasons, and two of the three losses in 2016 were to Tennessee (in overtime) and Miami.
Satterfield has almost a Stanford-like model of physicality, something that would seemingly play well in the Big Ten. But industry sources say to keep an eye on the jobs in the North Carolina Triangle (N.C. State, UNC and Duke) for Satterfield’s likeliest next step."

Satt's next step is another SBC title and a top 25 ranking in 2017. I'm going to enjoy the ride.

The only one I see possibly changing next year would be NC State. Fedora may leave on his own, but he's damaged goods. If Cutcliffe's seat gets warm, Duke will just get him another chair.

I've been telling my NC State friends that Satt is their next Head Coach for a year now. It's a perfect fit. He's from that area of the State, a move to Raleigh isn't too far when it comes to uprooting his wife and kids, he's built two decades of experience recruiting in NC and the surrounding states, he's relatively young and incredibly successful wherever he goes (three FBS programs) etc.
I'm hoping Dave Doeren has a surprisingly successful season this year to buy us more time with Satt, but I don't expect that, and I'm sure another deep pocketbook will come wanting if State sticks with DD or hires another replacement.
This is our last year with Satt. I hope we go somewhere besides the Camelia Bowl.

Let's list all the reasons he may stay at App for some time instead of predicting his leaving.
I'll start with the first reason-
He is an alumnus.
Please add more!

At APP he will have a winning program every year with good chances of conference championships and bowl games ---

His spouse grew up in a neighboring county to Watauga and this is the closest FBS program to her hometown.

I don't disagree with your thought process Gonzo but I think there is a piece to the puzzle that needs to be addressed. Debbie Yow is set to retire in 2019, so should State fire Doren after next season, I don't think that State is an attractive option for SS given that a new AD will come in after year one might want their own guy.

I grew up a NC State fan (dad went there). With that being said, their fans in general are awful when it comes to how they treat coaches. I know all fan bases have some rotten fans but a majority of NC State fans seem to go after the coach if they aren't competing for a NC in their first year. I get that DD hasn't come out and blown the doors off the ACC but if you look at his season as a whole he's definitely improving. A missed field goal that would have given them the win over Clemson this year, a dropped interception that would have won their game against FSU, and they beat Carolina. And yet there is always a big fan section in the stands calling for DD to be fired. Sure they aren't consistent but State teams rarely are. Same goes for basketball. Gottfried took State to the NCAA tournament 4 of his first 5 seasons. And their calling for his job as well. Again, State basketball has never been consistent either so I don't understand all the blaming the coach like being inconsistent is something new. If Satt honestly looks at State's fan base I doubt that he'd want to go there. I know money plays a part but I don't see Satt as the type of man that lets money make his decisions for him. Between the NC State fan base being horrible to coaches, Satt being an App alum, and ACC refs being awful (I mean really really awful). I have a hard time seeing Satt going to NC State. I may be wrong, and being somewhat of a State fan if/when Satt moves on I'd like to see him go somewhere like NC State where I could still gladly pull for him. But my honest opinion is that I have a hard time seeing him go to NC State.

Yes, their fans are truly unrealistic - Sendak went the NCAAs something like his last 5 years there and they ran him out of town - they couldn't find anyone to take the job and finally hired Sidney Lowe and from what I have heard he wasn't even on their top 20 list --- Gottfried is not K or Roy or Boeheim or Pitino or Bennett but he is a good recruiter and an above average coach --- I think Doeren is in a much hotter seat ---

It wouldn't shock me at all to see Coach go to State. I just hope he doesn't go to UNC-CH. Wish him all the best and I expect him to be successful wherever he goes, which is why I don't like to envision him winning at UNC. That would be a bummer.
Having said that, I hope he coaches the Mountaineers to another great season in 2017 and I wish him nothing but the best wherever he decides to go.

I actually see him as more of a fit at Duke than State. Don't think either will open up next year though.

Don't think Yow will be making anymore coaching moves during her remaining time at NCSU, especially for football. I agree Satt would be a good fit for Duke, he's done pretty well at keeping a strong academic standard for the program at App. That said I do think his potential for the most success on a national scale would be NCSU.

Funny I see him more of a fit for UNC....and none of those in the triangle are too far from home for his wife. I wouldn't touch NC State with a 10 foot pole.

Agree, he could be a fit at UNC, I just don't think that one's likely to open up soon. But you never know. I mention Duke because I know he has a good relationship with Cutcliffe and because I think it would require less of an adjustment in terms of recruiting approach. (Read: He wouldn't be expected to go head-to-head with Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, etc. all the time.)
State isn't necessarily a bad job, it's just tough because the fan enthusiasm isn't proportionate to what their history and overall standing suggests expectations should be. Basically you need to get in, try to have a couple 9-win seasons and parlay it into a better job before the fan base starts calling for your head because you haven't won a national title.

I think Duke would be aiming high and landing low (for his stock value).
So that leads the question...who's a young hot coach on the way up we could target? I would've said Chadwell (bc he's done really well and GS wanted him bad - which would just be gravy) but he's seemingly coach in waiting at Coastal.

If, for some reason, we had to go after a coach now, or next year, my first choice would be Mike Houston from JMU. He's got strong NC ties, and has won wherever he's been.

I understand the question and am curious myself, but realistically I think the list of candidates for a job like ours probably changes significantly from year to year, so the pool might look totally different whenever Satt leaves (whether that's in one year or 30) than it would today.
