Man, some of you folks are seriously eager to say this ECU series is bigger than *something*, aren't you?

Just referring to the thread posing the same question about playing ECU vs. playing Miami.

Sorry - the BIGGEST future game in my opinion is Wake Forest - We have them at home this season coming off 2 Bowl wins and a SunBelt Championship --- If we don't beat them at The Rock with the players we now have I think we can all just shut the hell up about becoming a FBS power in the state of NC for the foreseeable future --- Those of you who have been on here for some time know I rarely make categorical statements like this, however I think this game is HUGE - the biggest MUST-WIN since Delaware in Chatty ---

Completely agree. We need a P5 win and this is our best chance over the next 3 years. Georgia will be stout, Penn State is on the come, UNC will be a road game.

Call me shortsighted if you like. The biggest future game to me is always the next game regardless of the venue or opponent. That makes Georgia the biggest future game for me.

Our game against Wake Forest is certainly a big one. But we're catching Wake Forest at a unusually bad time. This will be Wake Forest's best team since the '06 season when the Deacs played in the ACC championship. With nearly every meaningful player back from last year's bowl-winning team, the Wake team we play in September won't be anything like the Jim Caldwell-coached teams we saw in the '90s.

It may be February, but your coachspeak is in midseason form.

The biggest future game will be our next WIN against the P5 (not AAC). Unless that happens, I'd say our biggest future game will be the SBC Championship game in 2018.

Well Miami was the biggest game and we see how that went......................While nice to talk about I really dont want to see a biggest game........
BUT the important games for us imo are Wake and UNCC

I would like to ask DJ:

What has made ECU the perceived pinnacle football school in NC? Certainly not Top 25 finishes and big bowl wins....

It is routinely beating UNC and NC State.

Next "biggest" game is all up for debate and it depends on how it's viewed. If we want national attention it's Georgia hands down. If we want some real relevance in the state it's Wake. If some folks are scared because this Wake team should be so good then don't even bring it up. We beat Wake more than once back in the day when we were not even powerful FCS and they haven't grown that much. We should win and should be much better than Wake. If we lose to Wake we will get another pat on the head with a "good try Appy". By the time we play those other 2 I hope we have built our program to at least their level and wins over them will be commonplace.

Haven't listened yet, so I apologize if this is covered in the podcast but... did DJ really say that?

If so, I'd ask who exactly he thinks perceives them that way? Not TV networks. Not recruits - they aren't beating State or UNC for any of those save the occasional academic casualty. Certainly not the Big 12, who barely let them finish their presentation before telling them no. Not even in-state media.

ECU lags far behind UNC and State in terms of public perception and relevance, even after beating both of them a few times.

Oh and by the way, their team is terrible now. They were, at best, the sixth-best team in the state this past year.

Just a FWIW ECU landed a 2018 4 star QB over NCSU just a couple weeks ago. Granted the kid is from Greenville but so was I and you couldn't have paid me enough to go to ECU. I don't think it's far fetched to say *overall* ECU is a program we would like to become, which is why the questions are being raised. You say the team is terrible right now, and I'm not arguing that, but they still notched a P5 win in both of the past 2 years that they have been down. We've been up and have gotten smoked by P5s both years. They have many P5 wins (sometimes multiple in a year), Dowdy-Ficklen is head & shoulders above KBS, fan support is above and beyond anything we have in terms of numbers (and for the most part they don't have mass exodus' at halftime), they double our budget and they get plenty more alumni donations than we do. I believe everyone on this board would be more than happy if we were to replicate ECUs success over the years.

And since I started the ECU vs. UM thread I'll comment on that. That thread was simply about which series *you* are personally more interested in playing, not who the bigger name opponent is or who what the "bigger" game is. CFB for me is primarily just a tool to rib some of my friends about when we play their universities. Don't know too many UM grads so I'm personally more excited for the ECU series, not that UM isn't a better series for the program.

I totally agree, Daphne. That is spoken like a true veteran coach. As you said, the next opponent, regardless of the venue or date on the slate, whether home or away, is the most important game of the season. Having said that, I want badly for us to defeat Wake Forest in KBS as it would make our 8th win against them. As you know, we are presently 7-4-1 vs the Deacs. In matters not to me whether we win by one point or thirty. Just so we win and have few injuries and show good sportsmanship from start to finish.

I don't know about the "routinely" part, but when all is said and done, those wins are what made them a North Carolina household name.

Their program finances and fan support are far beyond us, no doubt. They're a bigger school in a bigger market. But in the long run there are better G5 programs I'd rather emulate. I don't think the goal for us should be losing 5 games a season like ECU has done when they've been at their best.

But that's comparing us vs. them. The question of them vs. State/UNC is a different one entirely.

As far as the 4* QB, I don't know anything about him, but let's see if come next signing day he's a) really a 4* and b) still committed to ECU. (ETA: Just looked him up, and he's a 3* on every site I can find, whose only other reported "offers" were State and UNCC.)

And that is my point. I took DJs comments to be, App playing and beating ECU would do the same for us. That comment was made in the context of which opponent does more for App:ECU or UNC.

I happen to disagree wholeheartedly. To me ECU, while they have accomplished a lot ($-wise and facility-wise) and I would like to be on par with them in those regards..... at the end of the day they are just another G5.

John: According to Wake's media guide (I couldn't find the information in ours), our record against Wake is 7-14-1.
