Ranking the G5 for the 2017 season

Unread post by WVAppsfan » Tue Feb 28, 2017 8:29 pm

During a meeting tonight I asked myself who would be the G5 team to beat this fall and who may get the invite to the New Years 6 as At-Large? We all could say we know who will be invited.... App.... But who is the competition? I found this article, but I ask what are your thoughts? Who will the best of the best in the G5 be this fall? http://www.foxsports.com/college-footba ... del-081916

I don't think that we will get the invite without a great deal of help. Look at WMU. They went undefeated, beat two meh P5s and the powers that be were hoping for a two loss Navy team to win out so they could justify putting them in over the Broncos. Our conference schedule is soft, and aside from a win against a mediocre, by SEC standards, Georgia, if a sexier team is sitting at 11-2 then they would get in ahead of us. USF comes to mind. They are in a superior conference, albeit mostly perception, and they are from a metro area. So while I beleive that we will be a good team, I am not holding out for a NY6 invite.

You are correct. It will take a lot for that to occur/. I am hopeful that we can make a run for it.

Georgia is expected to be much improved next year, so while I think beating them is unlikely, doing so would likely get us high on the NY6 radar early on and give us a chance to stay there.

But that's the problem- most likely I think we must go 12-0. Even at 11-1, we'd probably need a lot of weird stuff to happen in the other conferences.

Are you aware that the article predates last season?

I noticed it as well. Not sure if the OP noticed or not but it is a good question.

I do know the artricle was from the 16 season. I should have expanded my thoughts, bearing in mind that we were 6th out of ten in the article last year. Who is ahead of us? Someone from the AAC? A MAC team? Boise State?

If we go 12-0, it'll take a 12-0 AAC or MWC team with a top 25 win to stop us from getting the NY6 bid.

UGA and Wake will be bowl teams next year, some are picking UGA to win the SEC east.

11-1 gets us in the conversation, but not in at this time.

Still surprised how well App has done so early since joining FBS. So glad they did. The only thing is I wish we could be part of a conference more aligned to our geographic footprint. I know media markets play a part, but programs like Marshal cant possible be better fit than App. Would love to be playing some of those teams in a conference like that. Anyone hear anything about that possibility of joining Conf Usa or are we here probably for the long haul?

Why would you want to join CUSA? They're as spread out as the sun belt and have been about the same strength or weaker recently.

There is no longer a reason to join CUSA. With their invites of teams with market share over success, that league (for football) is worse than the SunBelt. The only redeeming quality they did have was their TV deal -- but that is absolute garbage now too. CUSA really screwed up when they decided they'd rather have market share than quality teams.

For App to get a consideration for NY6 we need the following to happen:
1) We absolutely, no question have to go 12-0. This is non-negotiable and anything less will not cut it with our Sun Belt Conf Schedule.
2) We need UGA to perform well in SEC & Nationally and not look like they lost to us by laying an egg. Our win needs to look like we beat them when they were playing well.
3) We have to run all over all of our conference opponents because we don't play Troy or StAte. If we are seriously NY6 material we will not let weak opponents hang around. Whether some of our fans want to admit this or not, this is a factor, a valid measuring stick in how the outside world views how strong of a team we are.
4) We need a couple of the other top G5's to skip a beat/lose a game or two at right time.

But let's think big. All of this is possible. The last two years have proven we belong. They had us listed as top 10 G5 last year and we finished the year in that same category. Now let's take the next step, kick the door down and prove we are ready for the New Years Day party.

As much as people clamor for a western FBS conference that makes geographical sense, to help Idaho and NMSU, the same thing is needed here on the east coast as well to help us. What we NEED AND MUST DO is start winning some of these games against the ACC and the AAC. I know in my lifetime an ACC invite is out of the question but if we could sweep the upcoming 4 games in the next decade with ECU, I would think that if a nice east coast FBS conference, that made sense mapwise, ever came to fruition, we'd be a part of it. A conference with App, Marshall, ECU, ODU, and some of the eastern AAC teams would be very nice. UConn, Temple, UCF, etc.

Bottom line, we got to win EVERY TIME WE PLAY. Take a back seat to NOBODY. Go Apps!
