Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
Having been raised a Georgia fan (Father is a Georgia alum as well as most of my extended family), I follow Georgia pretty closely. There is certainly the possibility that we get dominated, but I feel better about this game than I have against many of a ranked P5 matchups. Georgia is absolutely loaded at the skill positions and their D is going to be tough! Chubb and Michel are beasts at RB but they looked downright average last year running behind a bad OL. That OL lost both tackles and the Center and is rebuilding. That being said, they recruited a best class of incoming freshmen at OL I've ever seen but most of those guys are being red shirted. I think one of them is slotted to start. This being the first game of the season is a very good thing since I'm hoping their OL play won't be clicking yet.
If Georgia's OL controls the line of scrimmage and we have to stack the box, Georgia will likely score a lot and it will be a long day. If we can get pressure on Eason, we can stay in the game.
If App's WR corps isn't improved and we become one dimensional, we will have trouble scoring. We don't have to throw bombs, but we have to make Georgia defend the pass.
I'm still very optimistic that App will make this a game. Georgia won't take us "light" but they are still likely to be over confident and looking forward to the ND game. Let's make them pay!
GO APPS!!! BEAT THE DAWGS!!!!

I have it on good authority (that authority being this MMB) that the VaT game didn't actually happen...so they need to remove that reference.CornCobPipes wrote:Are we gonna let the Gawja Dawgs give us a REALITY CHECK?
Or are we gonna shock the world with a sleeper can of vacuum packed mountain WHUPASS? What say you? Hope this isn't Miami version 2 or worse.

Haha entertaining video. And it unfortunately parrots the talking point a lot on this board avoid: we haven't beat anyone since Michigan and frankly the P5 games haven't been close. Sportsbook line right now is 14.5 if we could keep it to two scores I'd be happy. But it will likely be more like when we played them before the jump to FBS, and like the Miami and Clemson games. I just don't see how its not, but like CCP above would gladly be proven wrong.

Tennessee was quite close, but I take your point. Our performance against P5 competition *generally speaking* has not been good. I'm just hoping we keep it respectable.MtnMan09 wrote:Haha entertaining video. You think Chubb and Michel are the two best RB's in the country? lmaoCornCobPipes wrote:I am afraid we are in for getting totally demolished.....I don't see us being near as good as we were last year and I think Georgia is better than 15 rank. With Gilchrist and Law gone I don't see those shoes filled and we don't have the talent to put the heat on up front on defensive line to stop the two best RBs in the country and Eason is going to take his turns down field too. Our secondary is not as talented as last year neither.

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
Georgia and Tennessee have a lot in common. Poor OL play, 2 great backs, big week 2 opponent and a tough defense.
Many of these same UGA players lost to Vandy last year and easily could have been beaten by UK and Mizzou. UGA really struggled at OL and it caused them to be vulnerable vs lesser teams. Heck even ULL and Nicholls State competed with them.
To be honest if we are not competitive at this point it should be a disappointment. These guys aren't Clemson and Eason isn't Deshaun Watson. We just need to manage the game and find a way to be within a score at halftime. Even Miami last year was a 14 point game with 7 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

I can't speak for him but I think many people feel that Chubb and Michel are the best RB COMBO in the country....not as individuals (although they are both excellent individually as well).diehardapp18 wrote:You think Chubb and Michel are the two best RB's in the country? lmaoCornCobPipes wrote:I am afraid we are in for getting totally demolished.....I don't see us being near as good as we were last year and I think Georgia is better than 15 rank. I'm not saying we will win, personally I believe we will but I never pick against app. We aren't fcs anymore we are division 1 FBS. We have 85 scholarships. We have to start thinking like a FBS school. What was the score at half time for our games since 2007. We have better depth now more than ever. Heck even at Michigan App couldn't score too much the 2nd half. I feel we played Clemson well despite the score and I think we would have played Miami better if that game was in Florida. Long rant aside I believe in the team and I hope they don't go to Georgia expecting to be blown out.

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
Our failure to be competitive in games against P5 opponents is a valid observation but has nothing to do with 2017. This is a team on the rise and now plays at the FBS level. Most of those games were against top tier P5's (as is Georgia). Games at the FCS level are not comparable scenarios. Last year we took TN to OT and outplayed them for most of the game. Miami got some breaks and took full advantage of their skills with a LOT to prove. Clemson in 2015 was a playoff team and wound up in the NC game....they also beat Georgia. 2014 was a transition year and anything before that is FCS.

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
We can talk about half time scores, "team on the rise," and 85 scholarships and whatever else we want to, just like we do every year, but it does not change the fact that we are averaging a 33 point loss in these type of games. I want to get to a place where we win these just as much as the next guy, but there is a difference between hoping for a win and some of the rose colored glasses takes that are always posted before these games. We need to win one. Like "uncle lou" said we aren't Boise State...yet.johnoralex wrote:I'm not saying we will win, personally I believe we will but I never pick against app. We aren't fcs anymore we are division 1 FBS. Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
There is reality in all the comments.... it comes down to skill positions, no turnovers, special teams, creating enough plays , and a defense that can hold their own...... the team that does those things wins the game ..... I think we have a 30% chance, which is pretty good

You make very good points however this a different team than in the past. This is an FBS roster that is now 85 deep. We have experience on our side now and overall a better roster. Georgia isn't Clemson. I don't even think they are as good as Tennessee from last year. Our defense is good enough to compete with anyone.
This is a game we should be competitive in. Does it mean we will? Who knows.

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
"Trail of tears," that's a good one. I won't be crying but I will be disappointed if we aren't at least competitive and, as the underdog, I think we have a reasonably good chance at an upset. It would be a big upset, not as big as Tennessee would have been (ranked 7-9) or the Michigan game (ranked 5 and beaten during the FCS era). If we want to be really taken seriously by the pundits we have to play these Power 5 teams better on a consistent basis. Loosing to TN in overtime was a start; a win or even a very close game here would be further evidence of consistent improvement and a win over WF would really get the conversation going. I'm jacked that we are where we are but we didn't get here by settling for the status quo. And so, I expect better.

I like how he says Tennessee wasn't any good last year, but if I remember correctly they beat his beloved Dawgs in Athens.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
The most glaring thing about those scores against P5 schools is App State's average points scored is 11.5. We are going to have to step it up on offense in order to pull another upset. I'm guessing we'll need to put up at least 24 points to have a shot in Athens on Saturday.

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
Georgia's defense is pretty good. I agree with Goose, we are going to have to score more points than we have been against P5 opponents in order to be competitive. That's going to be a tall order.
For this game to be close, we will have to be able to pass the ball and need to score at least 21 to 24 points. We also can't have turnovers. Our defense will need to continue to be strong and we can't give up quick scores or long scoring plays.
There is plenty of message board garbage to fire this team up. Most Georgia folks don't think this will be close and many don't think our athletes deserve to be on the same field with their purebreds. Not sure about their team, but most of the fans are looking ahead to Notre Dame.
What hurt Tennessee last year was that they thought they could be vanilla and just let Jalin Hurd run over us. Their lack of game planning just about bit them on the ass. I hope Georgia has the same attitude. I hope our team plays with a little bit of a chip. I hope we aren't just going there to see how we stack up and collect a check.
Oh, and you can call me Captain Obvious...

Re: UGA Talks Appalachian State
Without a doubt, UGA has an excellent defense and one of the big worries for me for this game especially, but all year is if our WR can get open. Georgia's best DB has been hurt and that has caused some shuffling, and this was in the AJC earlier this week and gives me a little bit of optimism. - - -
J.R. Reed, the transfer from Tulsa who sat out last season, went from safety to nickelback, but it’s not clear if he will start there Saturday against Appalachian State. Richard LeCounte, the freshman who enrolled in January, was at first-team safety, but it’s also not certain if he’ll start.
Either way, it seems likely there will be at least two SEC rookies in the starting lineup for Georgia’s secondary. And more could play.
While Parrish hasn’t been officially ruled out for Saturday, it seems unlikely he will play and his status for the Notre Dame trip next week is in doubt.
Coach Kirby Smart gave a timetable of two to four weeks when he confirmed Parrish’s injury, so there is a possibility he could return this week.
