Yes he did. 3 times I believe.

He was on 3 pro bowl teams. He never made all-pro.

When I was attending App I worked part time at a place called The Hillbilly Trading Post, just outside the city limits. One day (slow day) a car pulled up and Don Shula, Bob Matheson #53, Bob Griese and Brian Griese get out and come inside. Brian was about 6 years old at the time, rough guess (year 1980, I think). Bob Matheson (sp) was a local Boone native, linebacker for the Dolphins during their Super Bowl Years.

Anyway, Brian bought an Indian (opps, I mean Native American) headdress. Once I rang it up he didn't understand how sales tax played into the equation. Bob asked me to explain sales tax to Brian. Therefore, I was Brian Griese first finance teacher.

Bob Matheson was a good friend of my mom and dad. He and Pam stayed with us on several occasions and the kids as well as they came along. Todd and I are just three years apart. He's where I got my love of football and playing LB from. Still think about him often. I'm sure he and mom were waiting for dad when he arrived so they could get back to the story telling.

Bob played football during the "pre-Watauga High" days for Appalachian High School. Back in those days they were known as The Blue Devils, not Pioneers. Must be one of the reason he chose Duke. Just after their (Dolphins) second Super Bowl victory he came to one of our (Watauga High) wrestling practices, just appeared out of the blue. He knew Coach Brown pretty well. Anyway, I remember he had do duck to get through the door, big fella.

Bob Matheson was a good friend of my high school wrestling coach, Coach Brown. He dropped off at one of our practices during a snow day back in 73. I remember him having to duck in order to get through the door of the wrestling room. He knew most of my family (dad, uncle, grandfather, etc.), nice man. By the way, we went 13-1 that season.
