Officials?

I felt like the refs were as big a part of the loss as almost anything our guys did/didn't do. Does anyone know what conference this crew came from? I t seemed like every time we got a crucial ply they threw a flag, but didn't call anything against WF.

They were SBC officials. We did get a big call on 4th down--the pass interference--that lead to the FG attempt.

The only thing I really didn't like was the refusal several times to blow the play dead after forward progress was clearly stopped. It's a good way to create a turnover that shouldn't otherwise happen, or worse yet, get someone injured.

I dont want to sound like a referee whiner because if we had utilized some situations like most everyone has noted by now like the offsides on the punt and the missed/botched/blocked kick opportunities.....it's all part of the game....but I noticed Wake got away with lot of holds when we got some flags for that were questionable......also they had one interference they got away with that was obvious but then again I was judging from replays.

Watching in person, I didn't have a problem with them, other than the missed PI call on 3rd and 15 on the last drive. But then they did call it on the next play, so I don't think that one was likely a huge difference maker.
It felt like the penalties were one-sided, but in reality they were virtually even.

They were a good crew. They let the DBs and WRs go at it most of the time and didn't call anything when both were jostling. But that was a negative when they didn't blow the whistle a couple times when forward progress was stopped.
Rather have no calls than phantom calls.

Hate it when the zebras stare down coaches and put there hand up as if to say "that is enough" as the Field Judge did on the home side. White hat was an arrogant bas---d! These guys are getting arrogant as MLB umps.

I heard these were ACC officials as that was part of the deal we made. I saw a few times where the ball was snapped before their line was set, holdings that weren't called that resulted in huge holes, etc. I thought It was pretty bad. Now, we left points on the table we shouldn't have, but, the officiating was pretty terrible
I've also heard a discussion about the last penalty and whether the ref said "during the play" or "after the play".

The penalty on the last play was for running onto the field after the block. Clearly, it was after the play.

They were SBC offcials. The same crew that called our games at Akron and Georgia Southern last season.

Excellent point. Not sure about the last penalty but more than once the officials hustled to place the football so Wake could get the quick snap almost as if they were part of the Deacs offense. A couple of times an official stood behind our center delaying our ability to snap and giving Wake's defense an extra few seconds to read us and get set. Not a great crew regardless of conference affiliation.

BUT, the Ref clearly said, over the stadium PA system, "during the play" when he made the initial call at which time he turned off the mic. I am 100% sure of this, someone prove me wrong? He may have corrected himself in a separate call a few seconds after that (I don't know but don't think he did) but he did not correct it during that 1st call. That is why there was so much confusion and some applause when he called the penalty.

Yes, I don't disagree. I've just heard that some thought they heard the official say "during the play" which is obviously incorrect wording. If that's the case, it just adds to the fact that they weren't good.

Clearly, WE lost the game. Wake did not win it. The extra point wasn’t blocked, it was kicked into the ass of our O line.
But, anyway, the officiating was terrible from on standpoint, IMO. They could have called holding on Wake’s O line on virtually every play. They could handle our speed and they were holding, no just on one side, but across the line. It was very frustrating to watch.
But, our sloppy, undisclpined play lost the game, in spite of the officiating. I wish it had been an ACC crew.

That was SBC's Kevin Stein and crew Saturday. They have officiated many of our games since joining the Sun Belt.

Guess it's good to know nothing much has changed from last year then...

It could have been during the play, but after the block. At that point, possession would have changed, kinda like on a punt.

When they stand over the ball at the LOS it's because the offense has made substitutions and the defense has to be allowed a chance to do the same. If the offense didn't make substitutions then the refs
should be hustling to place the football.

Blaming officials after a loss is such low hanging fruit. Bad/missed/questionable calls go both ways but fans only focus on the ones that negatively affected their team.
App lost pure and simple because we did not execute when the game was on the line. The kicking game left 7 points on the field with the blocked PAT, the missed FG, and then the blocked FG.
