Team comparison...for fun
We all do the “what if team A played in a different era” thing all the time. Admittedly it’s impossible and means nothing but...
How do you guys think our best team from the NC run would stack up against the SB this year alone? Everything being equal and we would only have the limited roster?

Re: Team comparison...for fun
the 07 team would win a lot of games - they were winners and knew what it took and there was some serious talent on that them other than the GOAT QB !!!

I think the 06 defense was better, but it took Armanti several games to learn the whole playbook. Either of those teams would have done well in the sunbelt.

I don’t think our ‘17 team would beat ‘07 Michigan, but they wouldn’t lose to ‘07 Wofford or GaSo and they would still be ‘07 FCS National Champs. If that makes any sense.

Re: Team comparison...for fun
Good input. I probably should have been more specific? Who could one of those teams beat? Is the Idaho game that close? Or Texas St or New Mexico St?
On a side note I have come up with a theory that is somewhat related. I believe that the offensive linemen on average G5’s are just slow footed fat guys. Our really great championship teams had the 270 lb dudes who could move quickly up and down the field with the offense. If one of last 2 championship teams was represented now (of course AE would be at QB) would that same smaller line get the job done?

Makes sense and I agree...The GaSo game hurt the worst for many reasons. One, it's Georgia Southern. Two, it ended a rather impressive home win streak. Armanti played like ass, and those were the days when Georgia Southern could actually compete.

Re: Team comparison...for fun
Keeping everything the same, including coaching staff, our 2007 team would do very well in the Sun Belt. I honestly don't think the Wake game would have been a L or have the nail bitters we've had this year. A true dual threat QB (The GOAT) in the backfield who was great at making plays with K Rich as another option. Our 07 defense was not the greatest, but in the Sun Belt with that offense it wouldn't matter. I also think we had better Special Teams and a more disciplined team in 07. That's not to take anything away from this years team, but I definitely feel the 07 team could compete in the 2017 season.

Kind of weird to measure during a season. Injuries and everything play a big part. '07 team should have been undefeated to me except for injuries stopping that.

You give Richie Williams more experience running the spread and there would be a valid argument between him and Armanti for QB supremacy.

First 25-30 players those 2005-2009 teams were pretty comparable to today, but the difference is the next 50 players on the 2016-2017.

Doesn’t it really come down to the best 40 or so anyway? More than half of each side of the ball plays almost all if not all of the game. Some starters play special teams.
The season long depth thing is irrelevant for this comparison. It is simply each current SB team V the best of the 3 from that short era.

Re: Team comparison...for fun
I think the biggest issue would be injuries in the season. Those teams, albeit great and gutsy and winners, were made up of smaller athletes than our current roster. I would think that over the course of a season we would see a greater amount of injuries to the 05-07 teams than we do now. It seems that often injuries occur during time of fatigue and my guess is that over the course of a season the smaller teams would have a greater likelihood of fatigue that leads to injury. But I could be completely wrong. It is hard to compare eras but those teams knew how to win and if they were healthy I think they would match up very well and may even challenge for top of the belt. They knew how to win, and it is hard to beat a team that knows how to win.

Ask an offensive line that goes up against us currently rotating 7-8 guys on the dline, or the RBs or LBs going against each other rotating 2-3 guys at each position.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2017 1:59 pmDoesn’t it really come down to the best 40 or so anyway? Saint3333 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2017 2:42 pmSo what do you think? Would one of those teams beat most current SB teams? Each game in a vacuum. Forget about week to week, injuries, etc. Would one of the best App teams from those years beat Texas St, NM State, Idaho, this Ga Southern, Coastal? That’s the bottom 5.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2017 1:59 pmDoesn’t it really come down to the best 40 or so anyway? More than half of each side of the ball plays almost all if not all of the game. Troy? I’m thinking no
The La teams? Maybe
S Ala? Hard to tell
Ga State? Coin flip
Ark state? Probably not
This App team? Hmmm

I think at this point in the season the 07 team would have one more W than we have this year.

I am still disappointed our team did not finish strong against Wake, but I am glad they have remembered how that works since.
