Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
Looks like, at least to the Gamecock fan base, that Elliot is in fact considering the ASU job. I'm not saying it is his to consider, but there is rampant speculation from the Gamecock base that Elliot is being actively courted by Cobb and company. I don't have a subscription to the gamecock newsletter so I can't say what they are saying, but it looks like it has some wheels to it. I mentioned before that I thought Satterfield would be the better long term option, but Elliot has arguably better experience as he's been very successful at South Carolina and they've been a great program over the last few years. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
Elliot is an Oline coach and a damn good one at that. But Satterfield has been an OC at bothe the FCS and FBS level. To me SS is more qualified and experienced. But I feel Elliott is the better leader. Toss up...cant go wrong either way IMO.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
its hard to see Elliott leaving SC, he makes more money as a OL coach than he would as HC at App. His family is from SC, and I believe I remember Elliott implying when he left, that he had a desire to go back to SC. He seems to be one of the rising coaching stars in the SEC and is loved by his players. I live in South Florida, and met one of his starting offensive lineman over the summer, I mention Elliott, and the kid couldnt say enough great things about him, he told the OL linemen really love playing for him. I think his next stop is OC at a BCS school. As far as SS, I think its his job to lose, the guys proven he can really coach, players seem to respect and enjoy playing for him, he is a good recruiter, and he is loyal to App. His wife graduated from App, his inlaws live in Boone, and his own family lives in Raleigh. He had said one of the reasons he came back was to raise his kids near his grandparents. If he gets the job, I dont think he is going to leave immediately if another HC job opens up.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
I feel Ron Prince got a raw deal at KSU and might want a HC job again. App grad with BCS head coaching experience. Hes currently the OLINE asst. Coach for the Jax Jaguars. Took the Kstate job at the height of Big12 qb's and KSU didnt have one of them.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
If Elliot stays at SC and they continue to have success he will eventually be a head coach in the SEC. Coming back to APP would be a downgrade for him. I truly think the job is Satterfields.

They seem to think we are making a run at Elliott.

Know what cracks me up about that article? The fact that the writer says that when Spurrier makes a good team other schools take notice and take his coaches.... Uhmm...... I think Spurrier took him from us first!
Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
whats good about these rumors of Elliott, is if they get enough traction, the "old idiot ball coach" might panic and give Elliott a pay rise to stay. Would love to see Elliott get a raise becouse of our HC opening

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
I just don't see it happening. In my opinion, there is no way Satterfield comes back to the FCS level to take the same title (offensive coordinator) without thinking/being told he would be the next head coach when Moore was done. I know he love App, but I just don't see him staying as the OC based on this alone.
Now, Elliot and Satterfield, I believe were roommates at App, so I am sure they still have a great relationship. Maybe they both want to right the ship and bring App back to dominance? I don't know, but Elliot has always been a South Carolina fan so I don't see that scenario being accurate either.
Obviously, I hope I am wrong and Elliot does come back, but I just don't see it happening.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
Just spitballin' here but what if Cobb really is courting Elliott but for the OC job? Satterfield as HC Elliott gets a few years of experience as an OC in a place where he is comfortable and has been successful. Obviously a big step backward in pay, but a nice move for his career in the long run. Then throw in the possibility that we may be FBS to sweeten the pot a tiny bit.
Long shot, I know but I think given the info we've been given, it mind of makes sense to me

Maybe Cobb is going after both spending money he knows we're going to have from a conference invite we already have? Who really knows. We should find out more in the coming weeks.AppinATL wrote:Just spitballin' here but what if Cobb really is courting Elliott but for the OC job? Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
It's funny to hear these rumors pop up since Elliot was at the game Saturday clad in Black and Gold.
He could be either an OC or DC. It wouldn't be surprising to see him do either. If Satterfield is the coach, then he is very much in play since they're former teammates.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
Satterfield is a great OC, but I don't like the idea of him at HC. He's the chess master and needs to stay in the coaching box moving the pieces.
We need new blood at App State. Someone that will come in and run their system to perfection and preferably someone who will have no qualms with cleaning certain areas of the house (ie the defensive coaching staff). I'd also love to get someone with FBS experience and FBS recruiting connections.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
Do we really think someone with no coordinator experience is the person to transition us from FCS to FBS? Shawn has great experience but making the jump for OLine coach/Co-Offensive Coordinator is a bit much to imagine. He would also be "backing up" whether he came back as Head Coach or Offensive Coordinator. I'm not even sure Scott is the right one to lead us in our transition as a head coach though I would accept him more than Shawn.
PATCH, the Rooney Rule applies to the NFL. I don't think there is an official minority hiring rule for the NCAA.

I wish we could lure Tim Horton back to Boone...but that's probably a "pie in the sky" wish. He is an excellent recruiter and a very smart coach. He also loves Boone and maintains lots of contacts.

Re: Shawn Elliot as next Coach?
I know just thought I would throw it out there since Ron Price was getting no love. Look what happened the last time we hired a former big12 coach. 24 years and 3 NC's later we may want to dip back into that barrell again.(for those that dont know JM coached Texas Tech and got fired before coming here)goapps93 wrote:Do we really think someone with no coordinator experience is the person to transition us from FCS to FBS?
