We may not have a killer instinct, but...

Unread post by dp42828 » Mon Oct 23, 2017 10:22 am

We seem to have a lot of belief and just flat out find a way to win.

I feel like for one reason or another (ie- youth, injuries, *gulp* a bad call or two) we aren't quite playing to our ability.

And, so far, that's okay. We're 5-2, right were we all thought we would be (if we're being honest). This team could beat Wake 5 out of 10 times at the Rock, maybe more...

I'd also say that we are hunted more than any team in the Sun Belt. You're going to get everyone's best shot/trick play/extra effort.

It seems like Satt is coming to terms with the fact that we can't run like last year, but we are actually averaging ever so slightly more points than last year (29.7 vs 29.2). Our D is only giving up like 2-3 more points per game. I guess we just adjust the game plan. If we can pick up 6 yards on 1st down by throwing, then we can muscle our way down the field with the read option & run game. We seem to really sputter when we try to run between the tackles. Marcus Williams Jr. looked great, but I'm not sure if that's because he was healthy, fresh, both or he's just a stud.

Either way, I like this teams grit and ability to stand up against adversity. It's good preparation for further tests this season. With all that being said, I'd still like to hang 50 on GaSo :)

BTW - Don't you think UMass is going to remember 2006 and want blood this weekend?!!

Good post, and yes, we are getting everyone's best shot. That will continue. I hope the finding a way to win does as well.

I am not sure that we are hunted more than anyone in the Sun Belt, I bet Ark State and Troy get every team up just as well if not more than we do. Ark State has ruled the Sun Belt since before we even arrived and continue to win conference games. Troy has big out of conference wins or close losses and in the last 2 years has regained their winning ways in the Belt. But i do agree that we seem to find ways to win and that is a mindset that can carry a team a long way.

We are currently ranked at #53 in yards per game, we are #52 in rush yards per game sandwiched between NCSU and Duke and we are #55 in pass yards per. Considering there are 130 teams that has us nicely in the top half.

Defensively we are #37 in total YPG, #62 against the pass and #41 against the rush. Tied for #38 in PPG. So that’s close to the top third.

Also tied for #21 in both sacks and PIC’s.

All that being said we are not doing that badly from my perspective.

I wonder how we compare with the number of first downs per game between the two years.

Down 2 per game--22.4 in 2016 to 20.4 in 2017.

That probably translates to about 3:00-4:00 minutes a game that the defense is on the field. That’s adds up.

Very perceptive, you are! Last year we led the SBC in TOP at 33:35 per game, this year we are 5th averaging 30:33 minutes per game. A difference of 3 minutes that our defense is on the field this season.
