I went to the game yesterday........

And it was one of the strangest game experiences ever. We parked in the large lot with all the UMass fans and the only flags we saw were App flags, and the only tent we saw was an App tent. When heading to the game there were thousands of students streaming in the opposite direction. We though at first we were heading in the wrong way. We were then told that all the students come to tailgate and the leave to go party when the game starts. They don’t even go in to the game! We had a hard time finding a student section. And as for the stadium, I’ve been I high school stadiums better than this one.
It appears there is no investment in this program. Either financially or as a fan base. It was really kind of sad. Just our impression; maybe we missed something.
Makes me proud of what Appalachian has done.

I would hope the only way we schedule these guys again in football is if we get them to agree to a home/home in basketball as well. This opponent does nothing to help us in football, but is very valuable to UMass since they are an independent. Home/Home in basketball would help us build our program and I think it would be a fair agreement.

I hope we never play there again until they can get a better TV deal. I am spoiled with ESPN3. I couldn't steam the entire overtime. If the fan base can't even watch the entire game without it going in and out then I say we pass no matter who the team is.

I’m thankful my feed went out in OT.

We thought the same thing. Crazy to see the students leave before the game. I did enjoy the band day event. Over 3000 band members from area high schools. Might be a good idea for some of the lower attended games. All those band members have parents. Could increase attendance as the parents want to see them perform.

At App, the tailgate is part of gameday. I didn't sense that UMASS has made that connection. They have lots of nice grass area for tailgating, and it is level. But they don't open the lots until 11:30! I had to wait on the roadside for 20 minutes before the police officer would let me in. (Perhaps that is different for donor parking areas). By the time you negotiate any traffic, park and set up, you're down to a couple of hours of tailgate time before you have to break down and head to the game. I need more time to prep myself for the game!

I'm not sure there could have been enough prep time for THAT game --- one of the ugliest games I have seen in a long long time ---

That is not UMass's problem. At the Nat'l Champeenship game, back in aught-six, UMass brought less than 500 fans. Pitiful. People in the NE dont' support college football.
This is a northeast college football phenomenon. Folks in the NE have too many other things to do. Ice hockey, pro football, la cross, chess, etc.
I have heard it explained like this: At a college football game in the north, you will hear the Star Spangled Banner sung (badly) in unison. At a college football game in the south, you will hear the Nat'l Anthem sung in perfect 4 part harmony.
Not far from the truth.

I'd rather have a fan base that sings our national anthem out of tune than have one idiot waving a Confederate Flag in our school colors which is exactly what happened at the Camellia Bowl last year.
If I wanted to secede because I hate President Trump I would be treated (rightly) as an undemocratic moron, yet that's exactly what the South did over Lincoln and some think they should be celebrated. Idiotic.

I agree, that's why I say don't help them by playing them again in football unless we get something from them to help our basketball program. Seem fair to me.

I know, I just figured I'd throw that in there, since I don't think anyone ever brought up the fact that some guy was waving a racist symbol in our school colors on national tv. I figured it was at least tangentially relevant in that it had to do with regional quirks.

Or not at all relevant to the conversation and really no need to bring up since it was not brought up when it happened.

The droves of students heading in the opposite direction right before kickoff was something to see. I asked a parking lot attendant about it and he explained they had been at a huge Halloween party and were heading back to the dorms to continue the fun. I have no idea what the enrollment is at UMASS but this throng could have completely filled up the stadium (not just a student section)!
