Richie Williams Edition [Black & Gold Podcast]

Unread post by APPARJ » Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:16 am

It's an open week but that doesn't stop BGP.

We talk to App State legend Richie Williams! It was classic.

Also, BGP found its way into the Winston-Salem Journal. Thanks to Ethan Joyce for wanting to do a write-up!

Nice podcast...I’ll never forget Richie warming up on the sidelines during championship game. I was like, “holy $h!+...he’s coming in!!”

Semifinal game. Always wanted to ask Richie if he thought the Furman player gave his leg a little extra tweak on that tackle. It looked that way to me.

And if I recall correctly, it was kind of a sprint out that looked like option and then Trey unloaded the bomb!

Not sure what you mean by sprint out. As I recall, the receiver (Dexter?) just ran straight down the field as fast as he could & Trey threw it & hit him in stride about 50 yds downfield. It was GREAT!!!

It was an option pass, Trey looked like he was running to the right, stops and hit Dexter for the TD. Everybody in the student section lost it. We were all super bummed when Richie went out cause we were rolling on offense up to that point. I remember later coach saying that play was called before we knew RW couldn't stay in and they didn't change the play call when Trey took the snap. Everybody in the stadium expected a run.

OK, I'll buy that. I too was "bummed"; afterwards, not so much. Yes, I recall Coach Moore saying they did not change the play. Cool stuff!

Considering the level of competition, I would have to move up Lamb on that list. He has been a proven leader, put up good numbers, won a ton of games against a higher level of competition and did this all while we transitioned from FCS to FBS. Yes, athletically and arm strength wise he my be lesser than others on that list, but for total qb accomplishments and wins, I would have him second at worse. I can only imagine the numbers he would have put up against FCS competition on a weekly basis. I really am not sure how many of the qbs on that list would have nearly the accomplishments of TL if they played against the same competition during transition years. He has been a very very good qb for us and we will miss him when he is gone.

I'm not a huge fan of rankings like these, but I understand why they are "fun" for discussion purposes. My problem is that I just don't think I can make a decisive list because, depending on which way you look at it, the rankings change.

My overall comments are these:
1) AE is obviously #1. I can't imagine anyone even trying to argue this point.
2) I'm a HUGE Richie fan and I like seeing him at #2, but I think Lamb could arguably be ranked #2 or maybe call these two a tie because of the major contributions of each. In my opinion, RW was the spark that ignited our championship run. There had been championship capable teams before that fell short but he was the "difference maker" that took us to the promised land. It's hard to put a value on those intangibles. I think Lamb has done the same thing for our FBS transition. Richie was probably more athletic and had a stronger arm, but Taylor has game management skills and frankly he demonstrated those skills even as a freshman!
3) I'm not sure where he should be, but I would rank Campbell higher. I am admittedly totally biased on this one though. :-)
