I love our former players, but I'd want experienced assistant coaches before I'd grab a former player.
My comment was made as a LB coach. Nothing more.
Mine too.

Hmmmm

Let me see....'takes look at current Wofford DC in media guide'....found him

http://athletics.wofford.edu/coaches.aspx?rc=660

Even has experience as a recruiter in SC/GA no less, worth an interview.
His wife works in pediatrics in the Greenville Health system. I wonder if that would deter him from leaving Wofford for Boone, if she's established down there...similar to what some folks say about Mike Young staying in Spartanburg as basketball coach. His wife makes more $ than him at a financial firm.

Our staff budget is already stretched thin, and we're going to need to find money for a 10th assistant plus enough to lure a quality DC. Using one position coach spot for a guy who's 1) a current staff member, 2) an App alum, 3) a former NFL player, 4) African-American, 5) presumably affordable based on experience and 6) an alum of one of Charlotte's more prominent football high schools would make a lot of sense to me.

We do hire a 10th assistant this upcoming season per NCAA rules, and I would guess we will look to add a bit more diversity to our staff.

We should look to add the most competent and qualified person.

That’s the way it should be anywhere.
Don’t hire someone based off of their gender or race, and don’t pass someone by for the same reasons.

Hiring woody was the smartest and best decision coach Satterfield has made. This next hire should be the same. My opinion is pony up and hire someone aggressive and a chip on their shoulder .. this decision is as close to hiring a head coach that you can come.

No one is advocating the hiring of an incompetent person, but this always a consideration that one takes when hiring. I would be surprised if one of our hires is not a minority.

Looking at former App guys, what about Randall McCray at Texas State? Played for Sparky and Coach Moore. Knows Sun Belt offenses. They improved drastically this year and stone-walled us. His defenses at Gardner-Webb were regularly ranked in the top 20 nationally. They appear to run the 3-4.

I'd be ok raiding JMU's or Jax State's defensive coaches as it looks like if Woody leaves, others on the defensive will likely be leaving as well (outside of Jones, I'd bet he stays in Boone).

Jax State co-defensive coordinators - grab both, I'd suspect we could get both for same or less amount of total money we paid Woody and Sloan combined. One has experience with linebackers and other with safeties/secondary, so has similarities to Sloan and Woody respectively. Both bring ties to Alabama and SC from a recruiting perspective which align with our recruiting strategies:

Looked up JMU DC, over 40 years in coaching. JMU could be his last gig.

I was reading about the JMU DC also. Pretty impressive guy. Yes, he's an older guy so I'm not sure he's looking to leave. If he did come to App, at least he probably wouldn't be looking to jump. I assume he is either wanting a place to retire or he has found it already at JMU. I think they're paying him extremely well for an FCS coordinator. On the up side, he uses both a 3-4 and a 4-3 scheme depending on the personnel he has available. That's pretty impressive.

I'll leaving it in Coach Satterfield's hands. I'm guessing he had some great candidates identified well before this thread got started. I sure hope this isn't where he's getting his ideas and that the staff at the national championship program up the road just might have already crossed his mind. LOL

How about some consideration to N. Dakota St. DC......could give us added recruiting reach?

Sat has a Sabin like quality of identifying and hiring fantastic staff.

AppState football is a program for aggressive coaches to want to come to work, learn, grow, succeed and advance.

The program is in great hands.

Congratulations and thank you to Woody and Sloan.

Blackwell is a very underrated coach. He was #2 on my list behind Sloan.

FWIW, he has already found a new employer. I was glad to see him not end up on an opposing Sun Belt coaching roster.

The hire should be "colorless" from start to finish. If this is done, how can one be surprised at all? Just saying.

The JMU DC's name is Bob Trott. Not Stott.

Whatever his name is, let's hire him. He has tons of experience with secondary's from the NFL, to the G5. Think what he could do with Duck and company, one of the most talented secondary's in college football. He's older, sure, but what a great way to cap off his career than by returning to North Carolina and coaching the state's most decorated college football team.

I am confident Scott is not using this thread to discover or evaluate candidates. If he is, I have less confidence in him.
