So true...much can happen 8-9 months.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 10:41 amHe was; I was alluding to both freshman QBs on next year’s roster.hapapp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:30 amI believe Taylor was a redshirt freshman. Brown may be the answer, but in the short run I would think one of the incumbent QBs would likely be the eventual starter come September. It wouldn't be unprecedented for Brown to win the job but history seems to suggest later rather than sooner. I also think we may be selling those already on the roster short at this point.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:19 amAlso, as we’ve seen in past years, just because you’re starting the first game doesn’t mean you’ll keep the job all year. We’ve had a couple freshman QBs move into the starting job after a couple games and go on to pretty good careers.
If anyone’s getting overlooked I’d say it’s Derrick. Seems much of the discussion is framed as Brown vs. the two sophs.
I honestly have no idea who will eventually win the job. None of the four would shock me.

Not rumors. And not just P5's. I don't post rumors.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:32 amAlso, according to rumors I've seen on here, Brown was getting contacted by several P5 schools but remained committed to App. I have a hard time believing he would agree to come here to redshirt his first year and forgoing P5 opportunities.

Sorry NBR. Bad few days. Didn't mean that as bad as it sounded. Just wanted to be clear that I don't post things unless they are confirmed. No problem from this end.

Unless Brown just comes in and just completely dominates more so than the 3 guys we've redshirted already I doubt he plays Year 1 at all. I'd say we redshirt Brown, give him a year to adjust to not only the offense but also college as well. We should be in very capable hands with any combo of Thomas, Huesman, or Derrick next season.

Re: QB next year
I disagree. I don’t think you “have” to go with brown just because he had late P-5 interest. I think you “only” go with Brown if he has a stellar summer and fall camp and is clearly the best. The intangibles are there with him, but it will definitely take some time to adjust to the speed of college football and getting our system down.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:30 amIf it's a tight race and there is little separation between the three, I think you have to go with Brown. One of the other two would have to be significantly better than Brown for him not to start. I could see maybe starting one of the other two with a very short leash. The NC State game mentioned above comes to mind, as well as the 2nd Michigan game.
Huesman and Thomas have had longer to adjust to the speed and learn our offense and practice with the 1s and 2s for a couple years now.
In my opinion, Brown will be intended to redshirt and only play next year in the event of total failure and/or injury to huesman or Thomas.
Look out for 2019 though... that could provide for quite the battle for starting QB

There will definitely be an open competition, but Thomas is the clear favorite. Brown has potential but I do think he’ll end up being redshirted. Thomas clearly established himself as the #2 guy behind Lamb this year.

Yes Brown is 6'5" and 230 bi that doesn't make you a good QB. He has to learn a new offense, new reads routes and defenses. The game speeds up exponentially from high school. It would be in our interest and his with the three excellent QBs we have to sit him for a year of education.

Re: QB next year
He effectively gets a year by coming in for spring practice. With the competition being wide open it could be any of the 4. I don't think it matters who had an edge prior. There is no sheriff in town now. Competition only makes us better.Rekdiver wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 2:51 pmYes Brown is 6'5" and 230 bi that doesn't make you a good QB. Re: QB next year
Satt will start with the best QB he sees as of Sept 1st, but that could be someone else by Oct 1st. I think you have to be careful not to destroy a kid's confidence by putting him in too early against a team like Penn State. In addition to Thomas, Huesman, and Derrick there's also the kid from Reidsville who's pretty good, Wilson, who was a PWO I believe. So, it's going to be an interesting Spring and Fall. I feel pretty good about our long-term prospects at QB and, after Penn State, the out of conference schedule in Sept is a big help for us while breaking in one of these guys.

Re: QB next year
The Penn State game could be interesting depending on what happens early. If App hangs in tough for the first half, Satt will do what he thinks is best to enable the team to be in position to pull off the upset. If Penn State jumps all over the Apps early, I think it could be an opportunity to get 3 or even 4 deep at QB and give the guys real big time game experience.
Spring practice is going to bring a boat load of more speculation around the starting QB. It should be really interesting to track . . .

Didn't appear to work that way at the Kicker position.... but they eventually got it right

I just mean they’re going to play the guy they think is best, rather than either saying one guy or another has to be WAY better based on what class they are.AppStateMtneer wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 7:19 pmDidn't appear to work that way at the Kicker position.... but they eventually got it right

Re: QB next year
At season's start they went with best kicker. Keep in mind before the Wake game he was perfect. When it became clear he had lost his confidence, the coaches made the switch just as they did with Taylor in 2014.

Brown is Cam Newton big, athletic and put up huge numbers in HS. Doesn’t sound like a project. We haven’t had a dude like this at QB.

Re: QB next year
Size wise, you are correct. But, he does have to learn an entirely new offense, new reads, new terminology, faster speed on defense, etc. If being a good QB were as easy as having the right frame and size, I'd be a millionaire by now!
That said, it's a wide open race. I'm really excited to see what Brown can do, but I trust Satt to make the right call. Just like I did when Taylor Lamb was named starter.
