With the front page discontinued I didn't do the weekly column this year, but I can't resist taking a stab at a final ranking. Just one man's opinion, of course.

1. Central Florida (13-0, AAC Champions, beat Auburn in Peach Bowl)
2. Boise State (11-3, MWC Champions, beat Oregon in Las Vegas Bowl)
3. Troy (11-2, Sun Belt Co-Champions, beat North Texas in New Orleans Bowl)
4. Memphis (10-3, lost to Iowa State in Liberty Bowl)
5. Fresno State (10-4, beat Houston in Hawaii Bowl)
6. San Diego State (10-3, lost to Army in Armed Forces Bowl)
7. South Florida (10-2, beat Texas Tech in Birmingham Bowl)
8. Florida Atlantic (11-3, CUSA Champions, beat Akron in Boca Raton Bowl)
9. Appalachian State (9-4, Sun Belt Co-Champions, beat Toledo in Dollar General Bowl)
10. Toledo (11-3, MAC Champions, lost to Appalachian State in Dollar General Bowl)

You seem to keep your finger on pulse so I will take your word for it.

Pretty solid list. Hard to get a read on those MWC teams... would have been great to see how App State fared if we had not had the injuries/mid season lull.

Easthall, you usually track the G5, what are your thoughts on how they can get G5 in the mix for Playoff games? Heard UCFs AD on LeBatard this morning lobbying for a ranking similar to the old BCS system.

Couple schools of thought on that.

One is that for a G5 to make it, they'd need to play a seriously heavyweight OOC schedule - not just P5s, but a couple top 10/20 caliber ones - and obviously go undefeated. Houston handled the first part last year (blowing out Oklahoma and Louisville) but crapped the bed in conference play. Boise and TCU had some BCS-era teams that would have had a strong case had the four-team field been in place then. So while I personally feel UCF had a decent case this year, you could argue no G5 has really earned a top 4 spot in the CFP era.

The other is that the CFP, being a for-profit enterprise that isn't sanctioned by the NCAA, simply will never include a G5 because their primary driver is financial and they don't feel a G5 would be as lucrative as a big-name power-conference team.

For all the controversy, the CFP committee has never made anything close to an indefensible pick. But where the choices have been close (and in their in-season rankings), they've tended to favor bigger-name teams. This gets the most attention with the playoff, but also goes for the G5 picks (where they appeared poised to take a 2-loss Boise over undefeated Marshall in 2014, and possibly a 2-loss Navy over undefeated Western Michigan last year).

Obviously the larger the field is expanded, theoretically at least, the more chance a G5 would make it. TBH I don't really have any insight as to what the chances are that the G5 collectively would get an auto bid in, say, an 8-team field.

My thoughts are similar. But I have also weighed the thought that a G5 “David vs Goliath” would be just as tasty for CFP to advertise, especially for TV. However they do it, I do not want the G5 to go to their “own system” as has been suggested, but an 8 Team playoff with the P5 Conference Champs, 2 at large (which could be G5 or P5, but mostly would be P5 I imagine), and the Top G5 squad would be interesting. Not sure how this could materialize, and I am sure I am overlooking some issues with it, but I like the thought of throwing some potential “upset specials” into the mix.

Power rankings I would agree putting App in the top 10, but full resume for a season I couldn't justify it.

FWIW Bill Connelly's S&P plus has us at 18 overall and the 4th G5 team after the bowl win.

S&P Plus - Jan. 2

Check out this page for a breakdown of how he compiles his rankings. (spoiler alert: it's thorough)

Your Rankings are pretty much in line with the Sagarin Ratings. ASU is currently #58 (8th overall among G5 schools) and slightly ahead of San Diego State. Troy is #68. Navy is ahead of us.

Furthermore, North Dakota State and JMU are #33 and #43 respectively.

I would love to play either NDST or JMU anywhere. I have a friend who constantly reminds me where NDST is in the satin ratings.

Well, that would drop us to 10. Still looking for your point. What is it?

They are the equivalent of Navy and Air Force which are clearly G5 teams. Independent lives matter.

Good list, but I think FAU is way too low, I think I would have them 2 or 3 as UCF earned the top spot. Watching them in the later part of the season, not sure how many on this list could beat that team now, including that undefeated UCF team. All their losses were early and once Kiffin got that offense going, they haven't slowed down.

They played really well late. But I can't totally discount that they lost to Buffalo or lost by 23 to Navy (any more than I can discount App's bad midseason losses). I give them credit for how dominant they were, but they played in a weak conference and their bowl win was over a 7-7 MAC team. The teams above them had better wins and/or fewer bad losses.
