Re: New DC?
Yes. There's a lively discussion thread in the Moose Lodge where those sorts of lively discussions need to reside.
If serving is beneath you, then leading is beyond you.

Re: New DC?
How do I (or anybody) get access to the Moose Lodge? I don't post that much (if that's the requirement), however I've been a member of this board and the previous board since 2005-6. Would love to get access but I'd rather not post something meaningless just to be posting to get my count up.

Re: New DC?
The Moose Lodge is primarily for recruiting news, but also for topics which, for various reasons, do not need to be in the open forum.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2018 9:38 amIt was my understanding that Moose Lodge was for recruiting news.
Whether we like it or not, there are a lot of people reading this board; players, their families, coaches, administrators, etc. Sometimes, there are discussions here that raise the ire of various of those constituencies. So, when there are topics that have the potential to be inflammatory, we're going to move them to the Lodge.
That isn't necessarily my preference, but it's the world we live in.
And for those curious, access to the Lodge is gained by sending me a PM and supplying some information.

Re: New DC?
Scott Satterfield obviously believes that Coach Brown is the right person to lead our defense going forward. He has obviously done a good job with our secondary. I support this decision and am glad we "promoted from within". Go Apps. Beat Penn State!

Re: New DC?
One of Satterfield's most impressive qualities so far has been his ability to identify talented, passionate, smart and promising assistant coaches. Brown has now spent a few years building probably the best secondary in the Sun Belt and studying Woody's system. There is no reason to be concerned about this hire, I trust Brown will do a fantastic job. We have a lot of work to do when it comes to rebuilding that front seven though.

Re: New DC?
Just a general comment: Promoting internally is a mixed bag, but Satterfield does show the ability to evaluate and identify talent in both players and coaches. In today's world where upward mobility often requires changing organizations, the history of internal promotions can provide an intangible that is valuable in both attracting and retaining coaches.
Yes, we lost a lot of "years" experience with the coaching changes, but remember that those skill sets do not have to be replaced on a one-for-one basis. They are very likely going to be distributed completely differently based on what we've already seen. From a risk management standpoint, it actually reduces the organizational risk to have skills distributed more broadly than to have them focused in a single individual. My rose-colored glasses wearing "homer" self will remain optimistic until there is a reason not to.

Re: New DC?
Agree with you on the mixed bag concerns. This a good hire for a couple of reasons. 1) Brown and Jones are good coaches and have been quite involved in this defense with play calling and scheme designs. Woody groomed them to take this role. How he did remains to be seen. 2) the pool of coaches available that are familiar with the 3-4 defense is smaller than that of 4-3 coaches. The pool of coaches familiar with the 1 gap approach that we employ is even smaller. Having said that, it isn’t like it can’t be taught or learned, but the four defensive coaches that we currently have employed know this system intimately and will do well. Of course, I too wear rose colored glasses.

Re: New DC?
How many of Satt's past hires have been fired? I can't think of any. I know Foster resigned. I heard many rumors of why, but none had to do with his coaching performance. To my knowledge our coaches have either been promoted or been hired for better positions elsewhere. I trust Satt's assessment of Coach Brown over anybody else's. Good luck Coach!

Re: New DC?
When i started this thread, I did so because i had not seen it mentioned here. I have no idea why it should only be for the moose lodge since the info was released to the local media. There was nothing but info given on what was reported.

Re: New DC?
The news of the hire isn't the problem. The issue is the thread was guaranteed to get some controversial posts. Plus, some more information was given.

Re: New DC?
What kind of controversial post? This is a discussion about the search and hiring of a coach. A similar thread exist in this folder about Coach Gasparato.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2018 12:15 amThe news of the hire isn't the problem. Re: New DC?
Discussions are one thing. Some people want to debate based off of opinion and not fact. There is the possibility for negative comments that could be detrimental to the program. The forums are open to anybody and you have no idea who is reading them. Therefore, it is best to have them behind the curtain. You are correct, there is a thread for the new LB Coach. And it the thread would have turned, the mods would have moved it.
