Re: Am I deluded?
I don't see us winning this game. Just hope it is not a blow out. So many unknowns anything can happen this season including a big win here. I will not be surprised with a 7 win season or a 10 win either. Trying to be optimistically reserved without delusions.

Re: Am I deluded?
We don't have a B10 line on either side.We didn't have an SEC line last year. We will play with effort and intensity no doubt .I think both our backfields , skill players(I hate that term) can match up with a lot of P5s.Up front is just a different story ,but I expect us to play well and I look forward to seeing what our guys can do.

Re: Am I deluded?
If App can get off to a good start and put some pressure on PSU it could be interesting. It's a big hill to climb with a new starting QB with limited experience but if the football bounces App's way a couple of times, App will be in the game in the second half. It will be interesting to see how the new right side of the OL performs against a very good P5 defense.

Re: Am I deluded?
1) Defense has to show up strong which they should be able to do. 2) Zac Thomas, assuming he ends up starting, will have to step up and play a smart game and make some big plays with the WRs to stretch/push back PSU defense. We will have to generate some offense and convert into pts to have a chance. 3) Special teams have to play well, keep us in good field position and not leave points on the field, i.e. make all xtra pts and reasonable FGs.

Re: Am I deluded?
That's "The App State/Satterfield Way." I'm just queasy about our QB, OL, special teams and our ongoing bad habit of picking up *#$@!* unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

I’m as big a homer as anyone....but I said earlier Franklin is the best coach App has ever faced including Smart and Richt. Penn State is the epitome of blue collar football. I’m not sure we match up favorably at any position. We don’t win even if we are turnover and penalty free.

Re: Am I deluded?
I’m not worried about QB as I am with whoever is going to replace Stringer. We were a shell of ourselves on D when he was out. Thomas will be fine long term. I don’t think that he will lose games for us. I am concerned that we will ask him to win some for us though and that will lead to some rough outings.

Re: Am I deluded?
Best coach ever? Better than Les Miles or Dabo or the ones you named, plus many others trough the years? He’s good, but that’s saying a mouthful.Rekdiver wrote: ↑Sat Jul 21, 2018 7:33 pmI’m as big a homer as anyone....but I said earlier Franklin is the best coach App has ever faced including Smart and Richt. Re: Am I deluded?
While I am a James Franklin fan, I will reserve judgement on him as one of the best until he wins the Big10 title. He has had success so far with doing more with less so the ceiling is high when he gets all of his scholarships back.

Re: Am I deluded?
To me it all hangs on the following elements as to how much we surprise. 1.) Do the coaches want it bad enough to open up the playbook with diligent preparation for this game or do they treat it as a conservative controlled experiment for rest of schedule. 2.) Can Zac Thomas handle and perform at the level of the first part of forementioned. 3.) This is listed third but probably most important....Can the OL rise to the occasion skill, execution and stength wise?
KICK ASS!!!

Re: Am I deluded?
Open up the playbook first game against a Big Ten opponent the calibre of Penn State with our rookie QB and they will shove it down our throats and the ball will be rolling all over the field when it's not being intercepted. Satterfield is no idiot.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Sun Jul 22, 2018 12:42 pmTo me it all hangs on the following elements as to how much we surprise. 1.) Re: Am I deluded?
I can't speak for others but when I earlier referred to "opening up the playbook" I certainly wasn't talking about reaching into the back pages for a bunch of stunts. I was simply talking about a reasonable mix of plays including a heavy dose of runs (since we are App State), short passes and a few longer pass routes. My understanding is that Penn State is very fond of blitzing and if we can't give them a reason to defend their backfield, we will have a very long day. We have to find a way to keep their D honest.

Re: Am I deluded?
I think we may have one of the best teams we've had by the end of next year. However, replacing your QB, half of your front 7 on D and the entire right side of the O-line, along with the coaching changes doesn't appear to be a good recipe for success for beating a team like Penn State at the beginning of the season, especially if they are taking us seriously, which they appear to be doing.

Re: Am I deluded?
Yeah, replacing the QB doesn't have high hopes for me (and changes on OL). Hope for not getting blown out horribly, being healthy and gaining good experience to destroy UNCC the next week.

Re: Am I deluded?
PSU has the following.
* Offense: 8* (* means some are part-time starters who return)
* Defense: 3
* Special teams: 1
App
Offense: 5
Defense: 6
Special teams: 3
The big advantage PSU has returning is a robust offense that has experience at QB and OL. Our defense will have to be ready right out of the chute as they will be challenged immediately. PSU is definitively rebuilding/replacing a lot of their defense so they have to have players step up there. That is where we need to exploit their own inexperience. We have new folks starting on our offense at QB and OL so it will be interesting to see which side rises to the challenge quicker throughout the game. If we are fortunate enough to keep it close we need our special teams to play well. Most of our 1 possession losses since 2014 can directly be attributed to pts left on field from special teams. We can't continue to do that and win against the top teams.
