Of the first 44+ players listed on the 2 deep, 38 return for next year. I don't know how good we will be this year and suspect our youth will hurt us some, but next year we should be loaded.

Minus the 2 LB's, 2 DB's and 2 RB's, next year's squad could be really nasty. If Law, Ware, Singleton, Barnes and Holloway get some good experience this year, watch out!

There is certainly no reason to look beyond this year but it's hard not to think how good this bunch could be next year.

Lots to be excited about. Just a few thoughts...

I counted 24 freshmen on the two-deep. I'm betting a couple of them will still be redshirted, but it's encouraging to see that many first-year players making an impact.

Shaq Counts, who I believe was 260 when he signed, is listed at 295.

Graham Fisher is the starter at center because Alex Acey is still recovering from an injury.

Congrats to freshman walkon Simms McElfresh who appears to have won a starting job at wideout.

Congrats, too, to Jamil Lott who is the listed as starter at free safety over two very good athletes, Patrick Blalock and Henry Barnes.

It'll be interesting to see how the punt and kickoff return duties flesh out over the course of the season. We have three really good ones in Tony Washington, Doug Middleton and Tacoi Sumler.

So Ian Barnard is our lightest starting offensive lineman? Really? If you've ever stood next to him you know what I'm talking about.

There can't be many defensive lines as young as we are -- with freshman Davante Harris, freshman Thomas Bronson and sophomore Ronald Blair forming the front three and freshman Greg Milhouse, freshman Stephen Burns, junior Adam Scott and freshman Tashion Singleton serving as their backups. The bandit position, which sometimes serves as a fourth down lineman, features sophomore Deuce Robinson and freshman Greg Hall.

Here's the Pirates' depth chart:

I got a good laugh this morning reading the BYB. Some of the posters over their seem to think ASU is lying about the size of our players since the defenses were pretty much the same size. Don't most programs fudge the numbers? They do have a slight size advantage on their OL. The Pirates will be without the services of Leonard Paulk, a senior DB, and sophomore Danny Webster, an inside WR. Both are still nursing injuries.

yea, what's up with that? Every team in every sport does fudge a little, but they are making sound like our 315 guys are 260.

LOL!

The ECU fans complain about our listed size, and todays Winston Salem Journal confirms that Lamm and Bronson are even bigger than theyre listed, at 290!

In terms of WR and KR, I feel like it is only a matter of time before Sumler starts. Guy has only been here a couple weeks and he is already high on the depth charts.

Other thought is that we may be young in a lot of places, but there seems to be some strong veteran strength on defense with Kimbrough, Grier, Sanders and McCray.

Overall, have to agree with others... this is a very potential-laden team. Could be very good this year, could be very great next year.

Reporting over on the BYB says Rio Johnson was named the starter.

Whatever happened to Kalan Jones? He went from starting last year at Virginia Tech before being injured to now not even appearing on the 2 deep chart?

I believe KJ has been out with an injury most of fall practice.

Kalen was injured in the VT game and then developed renial failure and spent nine days in the hospital after the injury. He has been in a long recovery and his mother has been putting updates on the Rivals board. She said that he is doing better and does plan to return and play. Hopefully he'll recover completely.

Looks like McElfresh is nominally a starter...but we do list 12 offensive starters! Guess it depends on what formation we run on our first play!

What happened to Brandon McGowan...little surprised not to see him on the 2-Deep at LB.

I think our depth chart will be fluid, especially at LB, depending on who we play. Some players may be better at stopping the run and others better at playing the pass. McGowan and Ware will see plenty of reps during the year.
