APP STATE / SO MISS WX TRENDS

Unread post by WXAPP » Wed Sep 12, 2018 9:04 am

I've been at this weather nonsense a long time. Truth be told, I can't put a whole lot of confidence behind a forecast for Saturday because Florence's forecast track is all over the board. Oh it's coming, but how far inland will the bigger effects be felt and at what time? As of this Wednesday morning post, I just don't know.

So, props to our AD & Coach Sat for not pulling the plug on the game. To our fans, plan in being in Boone for the game, but keep an eye on the forecast and make a last minute decision about making the trek to the High Country. You must judge for yourself about safe travel both to the game and then home again.

Having said all of that, Sunday is more likely the soggier day, with Saturday holding a chance for showers in the High Country. As of this post, I don't see major storm implications until Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Changes, of course, are possible and likely for the forecast. But, right now, I'm feeling OK about KBS on Saturday. Get in, and get out sort of deal. Steady rain should ramp up early Sunday morning.

I will post the typical breakdown of Saturday's weather later Thursday. But, for now, I say game on!

GO MOUNTAINEERS!

You are awesome WXAPP. That is about as good of synopsis as you can get about how the weather will affect the game. We are all so fortunate to have someone like you. I tip my hat to you and will be watching for your Thursday report. Thanks again.

Thanks, WXAPP. Forecasting hurricanes has got to be a beast. I appreciate the extra effort to post here.

Here is an idea from down here. some of us experts have mentioned our team flying into Knoxville instead of Hickory. What is that like 3 hours?
Also a thought, move it to friday night. That gives us time to get out with less issues.

I am from Knoxville and it is a 3 hour drive.

I agree with moving game up whether Friday evening or Saturday late AM.

The closer airport would be in Johnson City, TN. Many teams fly there and come over the mountain to Boone. The question is where the team would stay if it didn't fly into Hickory. I'm guessing hotels are already booked in Hickory. That would be the tougher thing to change.

I would expect a final decision will be made today on game time.

WXAPP, thanks for your reports! One request for this game, could you also describe the travel conditions for those of us in the Triangle area heading west on I-40 for Saturday as well. I live north of Raleigh in Vance Co. so I may be missing the worst of the weather, but even if the weather's ok in Boone on Saturday, I wouldn't want to drive through severe conditions on the way. Thanks in advance (even if you don't have the chance to respond)!

edit: Thanks anyway, but looks like there's no game this Saturday.

The later we get the more it seems Flo wants to go south.

The drive from Hickory is far less painful, especially now with 321 done

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State's home football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, against Southern Miss will not be played this weekend in Boone due to increasing concerns associated with Hurricane Florence.

While the scope of the storm's impact in the High Country is still unknown, university officials have worked in partnership with Southern Miss and emergency management personnel to reach a decision that is in the best interests of the safety and well-being of fans, student-athletes and game day personnel.

Officials from both schools are exploring options to reschedule the game. Further details on that and any ticket implications will be communicated as soon as possible via AppStateSports.com, via email to ticket holders and through local and regional media outlets.

Check AppStateSports.com for the most up-to-date information on the rescheduling of other home athletics events, which include women's soccer, men's soccer, alumni reunions and the 2018 App State Athletics Hall of Fame celebration.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

A good move. Florence will cause massive issues across the State, down through SC and parts of GA. Best not to have people on the road, and trying to get home as Florence settles in. Good Call.
