Train Whistle....
Love the addition of the train whistle with touchdowns.... Filled the stadium, musket shot going off... just added to experience yesterday.
Maybe down the road, a functional steam train whistle is affixed to the top of the score board.... just a thought.... Course, there's that whole boiler issue..
Keep on keeping on!
Great to be a Mountaineer!

Re: Train Whistle....
Talked to DG on the field last week and he said that was his idea. I like it too. From the field it was blaring. From the east side upper deck it's a little quiet.

Re: Train Whistle....
Yeah... I was East side upper as well.. they cranked it a few times... Should be so loud that people on King Street would think Old Number 12 has left the tracks at Tweetsie and is coming through town... Full throttle...

Re: Train Whistle....
Maybe one day, we add the sound to the Bell Tower/steam plant and at Trivette so it sounds like it's coming down Rivers Street and up the Stadium Drive into The Rock!

Re: Train Whistle....
Perhaps a rumor, but when the whistle made an appearance last year I recall hearing that it is a real whistle donated to the University from Tweetsie. Can anyone confirm/substantiate that?
Maybe the comment I recall hearing was we “should get one from Tweetsie”.

Re: Train Whistle....
Fot those who pooh pooh the concept... the roots of the train whistle are legit. The Cafe Portinfino building is the orgional Tweetsie depot (Depot street.. get it.. ?) building for the old Linville River RR... Old Engine 12 (found in operation down the road at Tweetsie) used to start and stop the day in Boone, at that location.
A good read. https://www.theclio.com/web/entry?id=27863
So, why not tie in some legit history that helped open Boone, and the early App State, to the world? I like it! It's a history other schools don't have.
I got curious.. I googled. I learned something new today.

Re: Train Whistle....
I loved it. I thought it was a cool tie to the local region and what all we have to offer. While the casual fan or visiting opponent might think it is a nod to Tweetsie Railroad in App’s backyard, it has a cool connection to our history here and how Boone grew over the years, especially with tracks formerly being right on campus.
I would be totally okay with more railroad ties in game day celebrations. That history aspect is unique to App and Boone and is not overdone across collegiate sports, while cannons, bells, and buzzers are.

Another great edition by Doug Gillin. Well Done DG. Also loved hearing the band play buglers dream on all kickoffs!

Re: Train Whistle....
Now, let's just slap a little historical context into the game day program about the train whistle (I suspect history side is icing on the decision making cake) and let the rest of the fan base gain an understanding about why it's now in use. This could really become a "thing". Lot's of possibilities on this sucker.
Heck, I'd go so far as to suggest, the Tweetsie Steam Locomotive Shop people, can put us in touch with an actual steam engine whistle (maybe find one from one of the other engines that ran on the LRR line) to mount and use on the scoreboard. Piped in audio fine, but smoke or steam coming out of it, with each touchdown...
Sorry... my train nerd is coming out... lol...

Re: Train Whistle....
Loved the train whistle. Like I said in another post, it's a cool nod back to Boone's earlier days when the Tweetsie Railroad ran from Boone to Johnson City.
I'm not sure if it was an actual whistle or not, but if its not and we want an authentic one, we need to get one of those bad boys like what the 611 down in Spencer has. People in Wilkesboro would hear it when we scored, lol.

I too love the whistle and history behind it. Really hope it's long term.
