Another good App State Football article by Ethan Joyce from the Winston-Salem Journal for App Trail (Ethan was busy today): "Is App State a top-25 team? Coach, players react".

App Trail: Is App State a top-25 team? Coach, players react

If current trends keep trending, a national ranking will come for Appalachian State this football season. And most likely sooner rather than later....

If current trends keep trending, a national ranking will come for Appalachian State this football season. And most likely sooner rather than later.

The Mountaineers (4-1, 2-0 Sun Belt) planted that possibility with their 45-38 overtime loss to Penn State. They carried it forward with dominant wins against Charlotte, Gardner-Webb and South Alabama. And they reaffirmed their case by handling preseason Sun Belt favorite Arkansas State on Tuesday.

The last time Appalachian caused this much commotion around a poll came in 2007, when the Mountaineers became the first FCS program to receive votes in the Associated Press's final rankings.

After the 35-9 win against Arkansas State on Tuesday, App State's Scott Satterfield, MyQuon Stout and Darrynton Evans were all asked the same question: Should App State be ranked in the Top 25?

Here are their responses:

Coach Scott Satterfield
"Well, I mean, I certainly think we are playing as good of football as anybody in the country right now. You know, to go on the road, it’s a tough place to play, to come in here and get this win — just the body of work. But I really don’t worry about it too much because I just know if you’re taking care of business each and every week, eventually you’ll get in there. But tonight, you played on national TV tonight, people saw us, so hopefully this will just get more interest and see how it goes. We really don’t care. At the end of the season, we want to be the champions of the Sun Belt. That’s all we care about."

Nose tackle MyQuon Stout
"Yeah, you know we’re at the point now that we feel like that we can play with anybody, man. So we just play hard. That’s all we’re worried about, man."

Running back Darrynton Evans
"Oh, for sure. For sure. We work hard. We work hard. We tell each other every day we got to be the best in the country, so as long as we stick it out, we should be."

None of them spent a lot of time talking about it. Frankly, why would they? It doesn't matter, really, until it happens.

But App State continues to form a strong case to go from just receiving votes to receiving a ranking. The Mountaineers have never been ranked in a Top 25 before.

That could change as early as Sunday, when the newest polls from football coaches and the Associated Press comes out.

It was a weird feeling looking over this week's slate of games and really hoping Indiana knocks Iowa Saturday.
