Re: Top 25?
I think we should all keep in mind that if EVERY AP voter (61) voted App 24th, they wouldn't be ranked in this week's poll.

Re: Top 25?
The main way it hurt us is that it allowed Michigan State to jump us, at least temporarily.

Re: Top 25?
It's wild to me how, after all the hullabaloo over us moving to FBS, so many people seem put out that fans are interested in any program milestones beyond winning Sun Belt titles.
We didn't move up to FBS to join the Sun Belt; we joined the Sun Belt to move up to FBS. The Sun Belt was and is a means to an end. A top 25 ranking is an indicator of national relevance.

Re: Top 25?
As far as being ranked midseason vs. postseason, obviously we all want to end up ranked, and that's a bigger accomplishment.
But the reality is that being ranked earlier might well be more valuable to the program. How many people actually look to see who's ranked #24 in the postseason poll? But if you're ranked *now*, then you get your highlights and scores more heavily featured in national media, you get weeks of *in-season* discussion of your program that just won't happen if we don't sneak in until after the bowl games.

I’m sure being 4-1 and not 5-1 is not helping us. The hurricane and the cancellation of SM has to hurt our consideration. We just have to keep winning.

I just don’t get Duke and San Diego State passing us. Our win was more impressive than each of theirs.

Honestly guys, I say this with respect and affection, but most of you are looking at the wrong metric. Rather than looking at how many points we get week to week, focus on how many VOTERS (in either poll) vote us in the top 25. App isn't going to get ranked until about 25% of VOTERS put us in the TOP TWENTY. I'm not suggesting pestering voters, but IT IS VOTERS putting us in the top 25, not points in the "others receiving votes".

I don't follow... The points is exactly what gets you ranked.appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 14, 2018 4:28 pmHonestly guys, I say this with respect and affection, but most of you are looking at the wrong metric. Re: Top 25?
I'm not sure I agree with this logic. I mean, we all know very few if any coaches pour over the rankings week by week and some even pass the duty off to SIDs and assistants. So if very few take the time, how many do we think reroactively adjust their mental ranking of a team they don't play based on how an opponent of theirs fared 6 games later?
I mean is Nick Saban really running through his head: "For Pete's sake I had App State at 22, and sure we don't play them but they did play Penn State tough in September...but Penn State just lost to Michigan State in October so what App did isn't as impressive...ah well they drop 10 spots in my poll. BTW can I get to the 7-11 in time to get some more Little Debbies?" >>>>> seems like a stretch.
Strength of schedule and retroactive adjustment really only seems plausible in computer rankings that also adjust for how a team was playing at the time, injuries (ie % of offensive production lost if a QB or RB goes out), etc.

Re: Top 25?
EXACTLY. We didn't jump into the top 25 because, of the 6 teams inhabiting 20-25, three had byes, two won (one of which is unbeaten), and only one lost. Not to mention what the other teams ahead of us in the "others receiving votes" category did.

While 7-11 used to be their hours, they have been 24/7 since the mid 60’s...he’s got time!APPdiesel wrote: ↑Sun Oct 14, 2018 5:58 pmI'm not sure I agree with this logic. Re: Top 25?
When I last looked, I counted six AP voters that had App in their top 25s. If all six voters voted us 15th, App would not have the points to make the Top 25. Unranked teams did not pass us this week, teams like Duke, Washington St. and Michigan St. were on many more ballots going into this week's poll then we were. There are sixty-one AP voters and if you look that the ballots week to week it looks like we would need to be ranked in the top 20 by about 15 voters and in the top 25 by another 30ish to actually be ranked in the poll. (I base that on the assumption that no voter is going to have us realisticly in their top 15.) I'm just saying that at this point less than 10% of AP voters have us in their top 25 so we are a lot farther from being ranked then there threads indicate. Bouncing around between 20 and 25 of six to eight ballots is not going to get up ranked.appvette wrote: ↑Sun Oct 14, 2018 5:18 pmI don't follow... Re: Top 25?
Being ranked at seasons end requires "running the table" .That's the goal. The method is winning one game at a time.

Re: Top 25?
I think that the bottom line is this- at the end of the year be considered one other legit best 25 teams in the country. Nobody cares who the number 7 team is at that point. If you ain’t in the top 4 it’s all a crapshoot. If you end up at 22 there’s always an argument to be made that you might be better than the number 17, yadda yadda yadda. Just kick butt every week and beat the teams on your schedule.
