Last post on this topic (a promise): You can't be "ranked" 26th in a top 25. AP and the USA Today polls are not like Sagrin or FPI etc. Appalachian is good, the best I've EVER seen. But cracking either poll doesn't look possible this year given how few VOTERS have us in the top 25. 95&97 out.

Honestly guys, I say this with respect and affection, but most of you are looking at the wrong metric. Rather than looking at how many points we get week to week, focus on how many VOTERS (in either poll) vote us in the top 25. App isn't going to get ranked until about 25% of VOTERS put us in the TOP TWENTY. I'm not suggesting pestering voters, but IT IS VOTERS putting us in the top 25, not points in the "others receiving votes".
I don't follow... The points is exactly what gets you ranked.
When I last looked, I counted six AP voters that had App in their top 25s. If all six voters voted us 15th, App would not have the points to make the Top 25. Unranked teams did not pass us this week, teams like Duke, Washington St. and Michigan St. were on many more ballots going into this week's poll then we were. There are sixty-one AP voters and if you look that the ballots week to week it looks like we would need to be ranked in the top 20 by about 15 voters and in the top 25 by another 30ish to actually be ranked in the poll. (I base that on the assumption that no voter is going to have us realisticly in their top 15.) I'm just saying that at this point less than 10% of AP voters have us in their top 25 so we are a lot farther from being ranked then there threads indicate. Bouncing around between 20 and 25 of six to eight ballots is not going to get up ranked.
.
I believe your math is slightly off. Last week we only had 4 pollsters vote for us. In the most recent poll we picked up an additional 10, for a total of 14 ballots. That is 22% of all ballots have us in their top 25. Not less than 10%, as you say. Actually it means quite the opposite. The change from week 7 to week 8 was a significant 1 week pick-up for not just a G5 school but a G5 school from the Sunbelt. Keep up that pace if increase and we will crack the top 25 sooner rather than later.

Look at this way. At some point the number of undefeateds and the one loss teams will dwindle down to the point that we will start to look better to some of these pollsters.

It definitely is possible. Troy a few years ago got ranked later in the season after a loss to Clemson. We just have to continue to be dominant and hope some teams in front of us lose.

Out of curiosity, how many teams in the Top 30 do you think we could beat? Obviously, any given Saturday (or Tuesday...) can apply, but if I’m trying to think like a pollster and used the “eye” test, what teams do you think we could beat?

Right now, I'm feeling confident App could beat the Raiders.

But that's just my opinion. ;)

UCF, USF, Cincy. No question.

I also think we would be competitive against most teams ranked 15-25... NC State, Wash St, Miss St, Mich St.

Top 14, probably 50/50 we are competitive.

I agree, 15-25 we are highly competitive. 5-15 we don’t get embarrassed. 1-5 we probably get embarrassed.

But... But.... Gruden.... QB whisperer.... Gruden grinders.... But... But...

Honestly though. The NFL product is awful right now. No defense--defenders playing soft because no contact practices and safety rules. I watch because I watch any sports, but it's honestly not fun watching teams just run up and down the field.

Why is everyone hoping to break the top 25 so bad? I know it would be one hell of an achievement, but is it really that big of a deal right this moment? Just win out and it will happen when it happens.

So say we run the table and win both the conference championship and our bowl game we might be in the 15 range at year end. We potentially return a better team next year. If all this happens this year shouldn’t we be a solid preseason top 20 next year? If all that does happen and we aren’t the rankings are a joke.

I would think we would need another year to show this is sustainable. However, if we are ranked Top 30 going into the season with matchups against both Carolinas and ETSU, as long as we take care of business, we should be looking to solidify ourselves in the teens. I’d consider that a great accomplishment considering we are out of the SunBelt.

The way things are set up, we have a VERY realistic chance at making the access Bowl next year IF we take care of business. This year a top 25 ranking, conference championship (game in Boone),and another bowl win are VERY possible. Let’s do it.
