State of the backfield

With Jalin out, there's new questions about how the workload will be handed out.

Darrynton Evans is now the RB1, but his skill set is different than Jalin.

Marcus Williams Jr and D'Andre Hicks will be fighting for carries now.

The first wildcard is true freshman Camerun Peoples. Everyone says he's the real deal and possible future RB1, but they want to redshirt him. He played versus G-W and has three redshirt games left.

The second wildcard is Daetrich Harrington. Satt confirmed this morning he is cleared after tearing his ACL in February, but won't probably use him until the "last month of the season." He could still only play four games and redshirt.

that’s 5 SOLID options right there!

hmmmm...could pulling the Camerun shirt give us any indication on Coach Satt’s coaching plans for at least thru or after the ‘21 season?

Personally I would try to use Peoples against Troy and Ga Southern only if able.

Obviously if he is one of the best 2 backs and will see significant run, then burn the shirt. Only save it if you feel like the others can hold up and/or you do not think he is a top option.

Evans hopefully will be relieved of kickoff receiving duties?

If Evans, Williams and Hicks can get it done, which I think they can, and we can still let Peoples and Harrington play some while preserving their red-shirt, then why not?

Good strategy, IMHO.

This is a special looking season, I'd rather we pull CameRUNs redshirt and just unleash him. We seem to be getting strong RB recruits every couple of years, lets see CameRUN grow with Zac. I like Evans as that change of pace and KR guy. He is a wildcard.

So we have at least 7 games, hogpefully eight games remaining. So with 7 then you can play Peoples 3 games and Harrington 4 and be Ok. This is why I like this new rule as it adds another element of strategy.

I agree that Evans needs to be removed from kick offs but who replaces him and does it cause a significant regression in our STs? We really only average about 40 rushing attempts per game and Moore was only getting about half of those so Evans, Hicks, Williams Should be able to handle the load with Harper and Clark pitching in in mop up duty. The problem with using Peoples now is that, while we can use Harrington later in the year, we have no idea how he will respond in a game and how much he can play. So if you use Peoples for LaLa and Gawja Suthun, what do you do if one of the top three go down later on? MHO.

94, that is the million dollar question.

If you pull Peoples shirt, then you state he is one of your 2 best backs. Meaning him and Evans one and two. I would not pull his shirt or use him in a game in mop up time. If hes playing he should be a big part of the game plan if that makes sense.

Harrington could be a nice boost late too. The question is how does he hold up. He was very encouraging the last few games last year.

Based on how he was playing when he went down Harrington would be number one right now if he had not been injured. I am wary of interjecting him at the midpoint of the season though unless we lose someone else.Agree about taking #3 off of returns.Perhaps Heath?

I like putting Marcus Williams at #1 and leaving Darrynton in his current role. Don't change what he's doing, let him continue to be the change of pace guy and the dangerous return man.

So Butch, are you suggesting Williams Jr. as RB1, Evans RB2, and Hicks RB3? I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m just glad that I am not the he one making this decision.

I would agree with this. Everyone being healthy, Harrington was #2 and would move to #1 with Moore going down. I like the idea of Heath returning which prompts this possibility. What if you ran a four wide set with Heath motioning out of the backfield. There isn’t s LB in college football that could keep up with him.

I think there is little question that Evans and Williams will split time. Williams is the closet back we have to Moore’s body type. Williams and do all the inside stuff. He can take the wear and tear probably better than all the other backs. They can use Hicks in spot play. Daetrick can be put in when available and use People’s in our last three games and save his redshirt. If either Evans or Williams goes down then the shirt comes off.

I don't want to rush Harrington (pun intended).

His performance in the DG Bowl last year was excellent and I want to see him dominating ASAP, but we have enough depth to make sure he doesn't retear his ACL. Peoples is a grown man, size-wise. I've heard he's the best RB on the team. I'm excited to see him in action, but I'd like to see him in 2022 as well.

I think Evans, Williams, and Hicks are an elite unit themselves and I hope we don't need to explore the depth chart any further this season.

None on the non-freshmen backs give you the kind of runner Jalin was. I think Peoples come closest to that. I'm not sure you necessarily pull the shirt immediately but we may find that we need to. I would certainly play him v. GS.

The issue with Marcus Williams has always been the ability to stay healthy and play week in and week out.

All of the backs have been hurt that is why you have so many, particularly in our offense. Williams has been hurt less than Evans and Harrington (missed less games).

I see that too but then decision may need to be made between Sun Belt Championship game and a bowl.

I'm sure that Satterfield will use their games judiciously. I'm assuming that Peoples will be on the sideline in uniform for every game. If the Coach thinks he is needed to win the game, he will use him. Period. I do think he saved him for those tougher matchups (GS, Troy, Conference or Bowl) if possible.
