I can see UCF making its way to number 5 but probably won’t grab a top 4. That being said do they get a major bowl bid leaving the NY6 open even if they run the table and still win the AAC?
If UCF goes to the 4-team playoff, that counts as the G5 guaranteed spot in the NY6 (remember the playoff is part of the NY6). The spot is then given to another (presumably P5) at-large. The only way for 2 G5s to make the NY6 would be for one to get the guaranteed spot, and one to get an at-large (not happening).

Hell will freeze over before the clown committee lets other than a P5 share in the playoff money.

While I agree it’s a sham, I would have a difficult time putting 2 G5 teams in to the New Years bowls. I think there is plenty of debate around which G5 would go in the event everyone finished with a loss (or two in the case of the AAC), but I just don’t think we see enough quality opponents to justify an at large bid over a P5.

In an unlikely hypothetical where say UCF gets into the CFP, we’d have to get in over a 1 loss SEC or Big 10 team. I just don’t think we’ve got the resume to make that argument. Probably ever.

APP plays 85 scholarship football with NO chance of a National Championship again based on the alignment and the networks and P5 money cartel. I'm sure there are some of us that would like for that to change.

We actually do share in it already. The G5 received $81.32 million collectively for the 2017-18 playoffs. The AAC received an additional $4 million for UCF's berth in the NY6. Reports have the majority of the $81.32 million shared between the 5 leagues, with a small portion being divvied up by performance. Therefore the average G5 league received $17.06 million ($85.32 million / 5) for the 2017-18 playoffs. The Sun Belt splits this evenly.

By comparison, the SEC received $54 million base, $6 million for Alabama's berth, $6 million for Georgia's berth, and $4 million for Auburn's berth in the Peach for a total of $70 million, $52.94 million more than the average G5 league. The SEC does not split this evenly, it is weighted towards the participating teams.

Now, if all you meant was that the CFP committee would be unlikely to throw any additional money the G5's way by virtue of giving a G5 team a spot in the 4-team playoff, then I agree! :D

Here's my take on all of this. Keep steamrolling the competition. When a bigger better league comes calling move up. Until then we play with the cards we are dealt. If we start this equitable sharing crap then we start sounding like a bunch of socialist. The elites of the ncaaf are the elites for a reason. They built their programs up and worked their way to it. It's like capitalism. We may never get there but I think that a lot of people really like App State and what we have done and what we represent. The only people that hate us are Ark St and GS fans. Lol. I think if we can pull off some wins against these P5 teams we will get even more recognition. Until we stop loosing in overtime, loosing at home by a point, or being blown out at home (by the P5s) then we just have to eat the crumbs given to us.

True for the Alabamas, Michigans, Clemsons, Southern Cals, etc of the world. Others lucked into it when they formed these conferences years ago (ala the Iowa States, Purdues, and Oregon States of the world).

** Note, I agree and recognize there uh-LOT of criteria for conference alignments and how they were built years ago, it's not at all about how good their football programs are now.

I had some dialogue with one of the hosts at WFNZ, Josh Parcell, after he did a segment on expanding the CFP. Here is what I said and he said he agreed on all points....

I have begun leaning your way on expanding the CFP to 6 or more teams. I think the degree of separation between programs (including G5) has gotten smaller and many teams can compete any given Saturday (this year being a perfect example). I would argue coaching could easily be the only thing that separates many of these schools now. Another thing, if more teams have a chance to make a playoff (including G5), it would level the playing field and many of these 4+ star athletes will start being spread across the CF landscape versus thinking their only chance to be noticed/compete for a title would be at a select number of powerhouse schools. All of a sudden, you could have a lot more competitive football and the idea of a more traditional playoff bracket would not be that crazy. David vs Goliath, Cinderella stories, and upsets would be the annual norm. I don’t think this will happen because the powerhouse schools would not like it, but as fans, it would be pretty exciting. Think about these 3 and 4 star guys who sit on an Alabama bench for 2 years in hopes of playing were opting instead to go to a lesser P5 or G5 school to start for 4 years.....

That's the meaning, A G5 team will NEVER play for a National Championship, and never get P5 money. The table has been slanted-cartel like and G5 may be in stone for a long time. I'm a capitalist and am to the right of Jesse Helms on the spectrum, before anyone thinks I'm socialist. It'll be a grand day if we can ever move up from of the G5.

I'd venture that we have come further in the last 10 years than we have left to go to get our shot at NY6 or playoffs.

So besides App winning out. What teams need to lose?

UCF (twice possibly)
USF (twice possibly)
Cincinnati (twice possibly)
Houston
Utah State

Did I miss any?

Cincinnati/UCF/USF all play each other. Best case scenario they all lose to each other but only 1 of the 3 can get to the championship game since they’re in the same division. So really we only have to worry about 1 of these 3.

Houston only has one loss and if they win out they will be the one loss champion of the AAC with a hypothetical win over probably UCF.

CUSA and MAC are both essentially out of the hunt barring a complete meltdown by everybody.

Utah State if they win out they’re the 1 loss champion of the MWC an undeniably tougher conference than the Sun Belt.

Is it this simple? If Houston loses one more and wins the AAC, do we get selected over them if we win out including the SBC championship? Houston winning the AAC automatically eliminates UCF, USF and Cincy, right?

In that scenario it would be a 1 loss UCF runner up vs a 1 loss App State champion. I still think UCF would get it. I think UCF in particular needs to lose 2.

But if UCF loses the AAC championship aren't they ineligible?
