The move to "re-brand" our athletic program as "App State" rather than "ASU" was publicized at the same time as our announcement of joining the Sunbelt. It makes sense given the fact there is another "ASU" in the Sunbelt. Frankly, the number of "ASUs" has always made it tough to stand out. In the FBS, "ASU" is Arizona State (Sorry Red Wolves).
"App State" is catchy, distinctive and unique. It has tradition behind it too since they didn't create it just for the move. We already used it.
I don't think there is a thing wrong with using "ASU" in referencing our university. The "App State" move is specific to athletics. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was an accommodation made to appease the existing ASU in the conference. Georgia Southern did the same thing...moving from GSU to just GS because Georgia State was also in the conference.
It's an entire university stance to be known as App State over ASU, we don't sell anything branded ASU anymore. It's till one of our registered marks. But to make ourselves distinct, they want us to use App State, thus the website, athletics, and overall branding. It's not a sin to use ASU, but they'd rather us make the transition to App State.

Um, doesn't the band still do the A S U during pregame show? It's one of my favorites. Guess they didn't read the media guide. Or maybe it's because the media guide is for THE MEDIA and not fans and University entities. GOAPPSGO!!!!
Also, wanted to address this as well. Yeah they do! I love it too. However, it has been discussed a little bit, and will surely be brought up to the new Associate Director of Bands/Marching Band Director in the coming year or 2. It's not a high priority, and it's a bit "political" when you update the "historic pre-game show". But I'm sure after the new director gets in and gets comfortable after 1 year, they'll look at updating it.
