I'm saying this now for the 3rd or 4th time...this guy impresses the hell out of me with what he's done with our defensive unit. Only blemish is really the Georgia Southern game which can't be fully factored in to how they've performed because of the 5 turnovers by the offense and special teams in that debacle.

Brown Among Nominees for Broyles Award
Story LinksBOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Bryan Brown is one of 53 nominees for the 2018 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches.
The nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 130 FBS programs across the country.
Brown, 35, is in his first year as defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers, who have allowed single-digit points in five of their last seven games and rank 12th nationally by allowing 16.9 points per game with their 3-4 scheme. Taking away an overtime touchdown by Penn State and an interception return for a touchdown by Coastal Carolina, App State's defense is allowing just 15.1 points every four quarters.
Additionally, Appalachian ranks among the FBS leaders in defensive three-and-outs per game (No. 2 at 5.88), first downs allowed (No. 2 at 125), passing yards allowed per game (No. 5 at 157.3), defensive yards per play (No. 6 at 4.31), defensive yards per pass attempt (No. 8 at 5.6), total yards allowed per game (No. 9 at 285.1) and defensive third-down conversions (No. 12 at 30.3 percent).
Brown is in his seventh year as the coach of App State's cornerbacks, who recorded an FBS-leading 30 interceptions from 2015-17. The program's "Legion of Boone" secondary has contributed to 64 interceptions since the 2015 season began, a total that ranks fifth in the country.
A 19-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, along with a committee representing the FWAA, will select 15 semifinalists, five finalists and one winner from the list of nominees.

Congrats Coach Brown and his staff.
Our cupboard is full of good, young and fast defensive players.
We are good on defense because we have recruited to our scheme and our coaches care about growing the players both on and off the field.
Additionally, most of our coaches have a previous connection with our school or have been here forever which is a pretty cool intangible.
Brown - been here since 2012
Ivey - App State Player/Alumni 1991-1995, been here as a coach since 2012
Jones - been here since 1996, loves the boone area.
Gasparato - Appalachian State (Defensive graduate assistant 2013-2014) in his 1st year as safeties coach
Smith - App State Player/Alumni 2007-2010, NFL player, been with the program since 2016 as either Director of Recruiting Relations or Defensive Analyst, in his 1st year as a OL coach.
It great to be a Mountaineer.

Impressive year and well deserved for Coach Brown. It has been enjoyable, because some of us have been through some seasons that had times that we weren't seemingly able to get off the field.
