Mt. Rushmore of App backs

Unread post by bigdaddyg » Tue Nov 27, 2018 2:01 pm

Who are the 4 guys you would put up on a Mt. Rushmore of App running backs? Who would be the number 4 if ranked? What would it take to replace any of the 4?

Kevin Richardson, Marcus Cox, Jalin Moore, Travaris Cadet?

...Cadet is here less of his accomplishments in Boone and more for his work in the NFL...

Replace Cadet with John Settle and you've got it.

Settle #1. He was a beast.

I think Settle and KRich are interchangeable at #1... 1a and 1b..... then Cox followed by Moore.

Kevin was the definition of App football. I remember him coming in a little overweight and very under recruited. I was friends with a few players and Richie and Mayfield used to clown on him about how he used to be a chubby kid, but that is how Kevin was able to build that strength on to his small frame. I remember him just wrecking defenders, no matter who we played. He was part of that culture change after we got Atwater out of there and the emergence of Richie after big Joe being a statue in the pocket.

Thank you. I knew there was somebody that I had no clue about and was well before my time.

Also I think that Evans, Harrington and maybe Peoples could make this list in a few years. Everyone on this list so far are big backs. Peoples obviously is a bigger back but Evans and Harrington are smaller speedy guys.

Settle is obvious choice and the other 3 would be on mine, but they are fresh. Would be curious to see if any of the OT's think of someone else more deserving.

I remember a story told by Richardson about when he first showed up to camp and he was falling out and laying on the ground from all of the running. Coach Moore looked down at him laying on the ground and simply said "well son, looks like you've got some work to do." So, he went to work and the rest is history.

This. Hard to leave Damon off.

Could also probably make a case for Chip Hooks.

Settle, Richardson, Cox and Moore would probably be my 4 but even though he wasn’t a running back Armanti is right there as far as yards (4th). Obviously the yards numbers get skewed due to extra FCS was playoff games for Settle, Richardson and Armanti. My number one is Settle followed by Cox.

I like the last notes that spoke to some of the current guys. Evans certainly might get in the discussion and Peoples might also as hopefully he is a glimpse into the future of big, fast backs that we have not really seen on the mountain.

Good stuff. Better than obsessing over where Satt will coach next season.

I agree with Settle, Jalin, KRich, and Cox....a candidate from my era...Brakefields wishbone.....would be Emmitt Hamilton. The 'bone was made for him and Emmitt exploited it.

Devon Moore?

He and Armanti were unstoppable for a few years in when we were in FCS.

Chip Hooks would be an HM candidate.

I would say Cox, Settle, Richardson, Scott. I saw all play with the exception of Settle who finished shortly before I got to App in 1988, but I have heard many stories of his greatness and have seen the stats. I have Marcus first mostly based on the fact that he put up big yards against FBS competition week in and week out. Not only is he the all time rushing leader, his average rushing yards per game leads us all time at 112.7 and he has more 100 yard games than any other App back. Even with missing many games due to injury, he still is the only player to wear the Black and Gold that rushed for over 1000 yards in all 4 seasons. Again, all this was done against decidedly tougher competition than the Socon, even during those formidable years of the conference in the late 80's and 90's. To me, the level of competition matters and gaining more yards against tougher competition just tips the scale for me. No doubt, all 4 were beasts in the backfield and I am glad they wore the Black and Gold.
