I like Doug Gillin. I feel like he's managed sustainable growth very well, knows football, and appears to have the ability to be a positive influence on the program.

Re: Press Conference
Blake also has a wife dealing with a Stage 4 - Grade 3 - triple negative breast cancer recurrence, so there's a lot of special circumstances going on at stAte at the moment.ericsaid wrote: ↑Mon Dec 17, 2018 2:57 pmIf he moves on in two years, it's a stepping stone despite being a Top 25 Program. That sums it up nicely.
Here's to hoping App doesn't turn in to the new Arkansas State where they had Freeze, Harsin, and Malzahn in three consecutive seasons then got stuck with Blake Anderson. Anderson has done a good job building a foundation of success and continuity at stAte which they previously lacked at the FBS level but he is also holding them back.
Either way, if Drink continues the winning tradition at App, gets us back into the Top 25, etc. and does decide to go to greener, higher paying pastures, at least the program is still going to be attractive to better-than-average applicants should that arise.

Re: Press Conference
I liked the way he referred to Zac as an "eraser" player...a player that can erase a bad play call by the coach and make something good out of it.

Re: Press Conference
Truth be told, he was having a pissing match with someone else complaining about the same thing I was talking about. There is a paid portion of this board to provide information about what he was discussing on an open forum, visited by anyone who wants to know anything. "Anything" should not include strife within the administration of the program undergoing a major coaching change.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Mon Dec 17, 2018 4:29 pmNo, hes talking about AppManDG with whom eric has had a pissing match on CSNBBS for thr last 3 days.
Just my opinion though.

Re: Press Conference
I understand everything Anderson is going through and have shared my thoughts quietly. Blake is a good guy and a great person for that football program. I was simply referencing the seemingly lack of ability to get them over the hump. They have talent and should easily compete for the top of the conference each and every year.hotrod2001 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 17, 2018 4:27 pmBlake also has a wife dealing with a Stage 4 - Grade 3 - triple negative breast cancer recurrence, so there's a lot of special circumstances going on at stAte at the moment.ericsaid wrote: ↑Mon Dec 17, 2018 2:57 pmIf he moves on in two years, it's a stepping stone despite being a Top 25 Program. App is Boise State. It will take winning those games against Wake, Tennessee, and Penn State to get the national recognition that Boise does but App has an opportunity to solidify the foundation of the program with a new coach at the FBS level. Failing here isn't an option at this juncture because a new coach having the same success as the previous coach for at least two seasons would do wonders for selling the program as not only a football team, but a culture in and of itself.
As Drink said, East Tennessee State comes first. They were pretty good this past season in FCS and made the transition from no program to having a relevant program look fairly easy. Carolina and Carolina will be fun but that's the game that matters. Should be interesting to see how many fans come up to see the start of a new era against a relatively local FCS school.

Re: Press Conference
You can’t come away unimpressed after watching the presser. He seems like he’ll be a great leader of young men.
Side note: At around the 46 minute mark in the video posted in this thread, who is the bozo who asked Drink 15 minutes into his tenure at App how long he expected to be at App? JFC.

David Coulson.
To be fair, you ask that question to get the quote about "this is where I want to be" which looks good for him.

Re: Press Conference
Finally got to watch the press conference. Must say I'm impressed. Impressed with DG as well. Drink kept repeating how many people wanted to coach here. That leads me to believe he has some folks already in mind. I hope he will retain enough of the staff to keep the culture intact or at least to lessen the pain of change.
Something else to think about regarding current staff, Scott will probably take everyone he wants. Those he leaves behind may be for reasons we don't or can't understand. Drink may have a better fit in mind, not want them for the same reasons or Scott or Moore may have filled him in on background.
At any rate, still looks like a great hire. Never thought I say this but......If we can't keep Scott glad to get E.D.! (so far and for now)

Re: Press Conference
Drink knocked it out of the park! He made alot of great comments and I especially liked the part about being his own OC. Said that way in a couple of years he wouldn't be looking for another OC! Hope he can nail down his staff quickly and get things moving on the recruiting front!
GO APPS!

Re: Press Conference
Coach D said he would meet with everyone that wanted to stay and explore to see if there was a fit. Gotta respect that. My only concern is the same one the Charlotte paper mentioned. He will need to learn to delegate or he will spread himself too thin.

Re: Press Conference
Could be reading this wrong but I believe he would keep almost anyone who wanted to stay. Just because someone doesn’t stay won’t necessarily be on him.
Re: Press Conference
I met coach Drink on Friday night in NOLA and spent about 10 minutes 1 on 1 with him and then spoke to him again after the game. I also watched the presser on FB live.
We have the right guy.
