Best Backfields for 2019 - Honorable Mention

Unread post by AtlAppMan » Thu Jun 06, 2019 3:48 pm

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/283 ... all-season

App got an honorable mention for one of the Best Backfields in FBS in 2019. Not bad company.

Appalachian State Mountaineers: Though the team loses a talented runner in Jalin Moore, he managed only five appearances last season. App State returns Darrynton Evans and Marcus Williams Jr., who combined for 1,748 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

Shoot, I would be happy just to see one game in KBS this coming season. It was the Homecoming game in 2006 since I witnessed a game in person.

I hope we see a set with all three on the field. How could you even defend that?

I said when we lost Marcus Cox that we were getting a better player in Jalin Moore and thus we would actually see improvement there. We are lucky again in that Cam Peoples is probably going to be better than Jalin Moore. Peoples could run for 1,000 yards this year and I would not be shocked. The only person who can stop him or even Marcus Williams from 1,000 yards is Coach Drink. Peoples is probably the most talented RB in the SBC and I say that knowing Louisiana has 2 really good ones who may play in the NFL, Troy has a real good one, and we have Evans (1,000+ yards) and Marcus Williams who is really good.

Isn't Daetrich moving to the defensive backfield?

You're thinking of D'Andre Hicks. He was a CB, moved to RB last year, moved back to CB this past spring after pulling himself out of the portal, decided to transfer again after spring, and is now at McNeese St.

Part 1:
This seems to be another byproduct of our continued move up process from FCS to FBS. The theory is that we started FBS with a team full of FCS level talent, as we transitioned, theoretically we should be replacing each player through attrition (whatever form it occurs, graduation, transfer, etc) with a more talented replacement. This process should have at least occurred over roughly a 4 year period until we reached a full 85 Scholar FBS team size and all the old FCS talent was gone.

Part 2:
With our ultra successful transition to FBS like few or no other programs have enjoyed, we may see even more continued better skilled replacements purely based on our successful FBS program over the next few years. This is when a program moves from middle G5ish to top 25. In other words, we should STILL be on an upward climb year over year in quality of replacements until we reach our ceiling as a G5.

Moose is probably the best resource to confirm this. How would you summarize the real results for Part 1 and Part 2 from a recruiting and observable results perspective?

I was just picturing Harrington as a DB...haha.....his hips are a little stiff for that transition.

It takes about 3-4 highlights of Peoples to see that he can be special. We saw in his redshirt season that he can run over, run around, and run away from defenders and take it to the house from distance. A very rare combination even though we've had some very good ones over the last 35 years.

One of the things I hope comes out of the Drink offense is the ability to spread the defense more due to Eli's propensity to pass it more. This should have the effect of opening running lanes more when the RB's do carry the ball. Give Evans and Peoples more space and they could easily increase their yrds/carry avg.

They already have very good YPC but I'm with you and think they could go up even more.

It's going to be hard to improve on 6.6 YPC. That is an insane stat as it stands.
