On the field, the good and the bad

Unread post by Mjohn1988 » Sun Sep 01, 2019 11:24 am

This is purely from a fans prospective. I have not looked at the stats, this is just what I saw from the stands.

Good:
1:We won handily, the game was never in question.
2: Hennigan looks like a man on a mission. He made a couple of awesome catches.
3: our backers look very athletic
4: we have a stable of receivers who can make plays, including a couple of true freshman who looked good
5: the o line can still open holes in the outside zone
6: we scored TD’s in the red zone
7: they only scored 7 points
8: we have multiple running backs who can get it done
9: Evans is the man, he gets very little hype but is a reliable every down back, and a guy who can change a game on a single play from offense or specials teams.

Not so good:
1: Zac looked a touch off in the passing game. We’ve seen what he can do. Not too worried about that one.
2: the D gave up way to many third down conversions.
3: although we didn’t give up points and we did make plays in the backfield it just looked like our D line got pushed around a bit. Made me wonder about the S and C program.
4: the O line seemed to struggle a bit in pass protection.
5: I’m a fan of the “tempo” plays but they just didn’t work. Almost every time we tried it we had a sloppy looking play.

From my perspective as a fan, we did what was expected and beat the spread.
I hope they work on pass coverage as that seemed like a major concern from what I saw. Defense did a good job up front from what I could tell for the most part.
Offense was slow out the gate but that has been the case under the old regime as well.
On the bright side nothing that ai saw that would derail the season, good performance from back ups when they hit the field too.
Beat Charlotte!
The heels winning yesterday only helps us if we win out!

This is purely from a fans prospective. I have not looked at the stats, this is just what I saw from the stands.

Good:
1:We won handily, the game was never in question. Agree, could have won bigger but we obviously didn’t open it all the way up
2: Hennigan looks like a man on a mission. He made a couple of awesome catches. Gonna be hard to contain
3: our backers look very athletic - great to see
4: we have a stable of receivers who can make plays, including a couple of true freshman who looked good- weapons and all are juniors and younger
5: the o line can still open holes in the outside zone- should get stronger
6: we scored TD’s in the red zone
7: they only scored 7 points
8: we have multiple running backs who can get it done- huge and hope that CP isn’t seriously hurt
9: Evans is the man, he gets very little hype but is a reliable every down back, and a guy who can change a game on a single play from offense or specials teams. - got to think he will stay on the field more when we have the tough games

Not so good:
1: Zac looked a touch off in the passing game. We’ve seen what he can do. Not too worried about that one.- will only get better. Was probably a little hyped up
2: the D gave up way to many third down conversions.- that was the biggie for me. They ripped off a few big plays when we should have contained them
3: although we didn’t give up points and we did make plays in the backfield it just looked like our D line got pushed around a bit. Made me wonder about the S and C program.
4: the O line seemed to struggle a bit in pass protection. Also needs cleaning up
5: I’m a fan of the “tempo” plays but they just didn’t work. Almost every time we tried it we had a sloppy looking play.- should improve with another tuneup game

DBs gave way to much cushion. ETSU repeatedly hit that 10-12 yd out route. Offense...it'll take some time. Playcalling was a little iffy. D line was concerning. First game...I'm going to give it some time. Definitely some things to iron out though.

D Line gave up 1 ypc through the last three quarters. Seemed pretty straight stout to me.

Earle is not in the two deep and Clark is injured (some say he's done but that has not been confirmed).

I thought our D played great honestly. I was concerned with the "lack of pressure" we put on their offenses as opposed to last year. This is obviously by design of the play calling, bc when we wanted to be in the back field we were. Ted has been around a Loooong while and my honest hope is that he was not trying to put everything is going to do with the D on tape for our opponents yet. We have an extremely experienced front 7 and safety tandem. I personally would love more press man from the corners and attacking from the front 7. Again this is game one for everyone and I don't think we have seen yet what our D is truly capable of and that's ok with me bc they did their job this week. ETSUs RB is a good back and after the first quarter he was ineffective. This week should be a better test of our run D as Mr. Lemay is a premiere back and Reynolds likes to scramble. I'm looking forward to seeing the chess match between their OC and Roof when it comes to their QB running. Will he Spy Reynolds? Will he dare him to run towards the edges knowing our team speed should negate it? What will the rotation be along the D line? That is what I personally will be watching this upcoming weekend and it should provide some decent insight into how our D will play the rest of the season.

Coach Drink's presser this morning touched on the mistakes on both sides of the ball. They were easily fixable through film study, learning, the executing with discipline. We started a little tight on both sides, but ETSU was a much more worthy test for us than Gardner Webb was for Charlotte. After seeing both games I think we can hang some serious points on them.

No turnovers and we dislodged the ball from them 5 times. Should have probably gotten more than one recovery......but a weird shaped ball bounces weirdly.

I'm satisfied with the outcome of the game and mostly the performance by the players, but in my opinion we shouldn't have allowed it to be a close first quarter.

It seemed that we got better during the game,at least to me, in about every phase. I really think we used it as almost like a scrimmage. In any event I’m betting ETSU will win their share of games in the old league .

The defense looked very-well coached. Most of the time they were in the perfect spot.

I believe they will be in contention for their conference title, didn't they tie last season?

Hell, Watauga would be in the running for a CUSA title...

I think he was talking about ETSU and the SoCon. That’s a harder feat than the CUSA.

That’s what I get for having moved in from last week to this week. And you’re right about the SoCon and CUSA

Yes they tied for the championship. I still keep up with the old crowd and I’m impressed with what ETSU has done. They should be competitive again this year.

I am concerned about Zac’s body language coming off the field after the Hennigan TD. Drink was smiling and talking to him and he just kept walking away. Somewhat of a scowl on his face.

Noticed the same, hoping it was related to taking a shot to the chin
