Coach Drink follows Lombardi philosophy!

Unread post by Yosefus » Tue Oct 22, 2019 3:28 pm

Listening to Coach Drink and our players reminds me of an article I read several years ago and have saved it since 2008. It is an article about Bart Starr where he talks a lot about Lombardi. The Packers first meeting with Lombardi went something like this: I am not remotely interested in being good. We will chase Perfection knowing full well nothing is perfect but we will relentlessly chase perfection and in so doing we will Catch Excellence. The rest is history.
This sounds a lot like what our coach and players are saying today.

I would say it makes for a good lesson for anyone who wants to be a leader. Yosefus, do you have a link?

No link. It was from back in the day when we actually got a Sunday paper delivered. It was in the Parade insert. I have the original article I will do my best to try and scan and get it on here. No idea how to do that.

I don’t know, but I have a feeling that if you were to go to Coach Drink’s home and go into his office you would see two full walls with floor to ceiling shelves. On these shelves would be one large family Bible, one small travel Bible, at least 20 books by and about football coaches and every motivational book ever written.

ol. 1:
Super Bowl legend Bart Starr and the coach who inspired him:
“We Will Catch Excellence”
By Jeremy Schaap
IT WAS ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO, BUT former quarterback Bart Starr still vividly remembers his first encounter with the man who would change his life. The new head coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi, was addressing the players, who had won only one of their 12 games the previous year.

“He opened the session by thanking the Packers for allowing him to be their coach,” Starr says. “That tells you something about the man. Then he quickly turned to us and said, ‘Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence.’ He came right up on us, within a foot of us in the front row, and then he said, ‘I am not remotely interested in just being good.’”

This may be easier to read.
