Yeah, coaches poll is usually worse than AP, for us to stay under 30 is a good sign especially since we have a P5 SEC school still left on the schedule.

Also wouldn't be surprised if ESPN pulled some strings to keep us at #25 since they already picked up our game at primetime next week assuming we'd be highly ranked and undefeated

If we can consistently be voted as one of the top 30 (top 25%) of the FBS teams that’s pretty darn good.

ESPN does not do that. Someone said they would put us next to Michigan because of the 2007 game one week but it did not happen. The votes are calculated based on the ballots turned in with no forcing of keeping a team in. We will fall out.

It was a 3-point loss in bad weather so you have to know we would not lose every vote. Some voters had us 14-17 range so they probably voted us 23-25 range. I think we will be at 29 or 30, depending on how much credit they give Indiana.

As for never getting ranked those of us said we don't have any wins that would vault us back in the rankings. We will need teams to lose and we must win big. We don't have a game where if we win we will leapfrog several teams regardless of what they do.

We COULD sneak back in the top 25 next week if 4 of the following happens.

1. We win by double digits
2. SMU loses to ECU- I doubt that. I expect SMU to roll.
3. SDSU loses to Nevada. If that happens SDSU should lose every vote and not return. Nevada is not any good.
4. UCF loses to Tulsa. That could happen
5. Loser of KSU and Texas is going to drop out and not be close to rankings. This is one that no matter what happens it is good for App.
6. Virginia Tech beats Wake Forest.

I don't see 4 of those things happening.

That is still a lot to happen and if we lose by even 1 point we are bounced from every ballot for good unless we win out, including SBC title and bowl win.

In terms of point totals they definitely are. I figured we would have about 15-20 points in the coaches poll. If we win out we can get back in but still need a lot of help.

Not totally shocked here because I did not see one person's ballot posted online who had us.

It goes to show though like we said before, the only way back in is to win out. No reason to even worry about it until the week of Texas State. We lose any game, even by 1 point, and we are done no matter what we do after that.

AP is about what I expected. Pleasantly surprised by coaches. Beat SC and we’re right back in the hunt.

Potentially but would still need a lot of help. A lot of teams have marquee games coming up and we don't have a big time opponent so it will still be tough for us.

I would say if we beat SC and Georgia State we are in the hunt but if we lose by even one point to another team we are done for sure no matter what. All that matters now is #BeatSC

It would be nice to beat SC, but the most important regular season game left is in Atlanta.

I can’t find info about how the aac decides on who to send to the Orlando bowl....but as far as rankings go....we would probably end ranked higher beating an aac bowl team and finish with one loss than to win the conference and beat a second place conference USA team in New Orleans as a sunbelt champion. Especially if it is SMU, Memphis, UCF, Cincinnati or Navy.

Don't count on it. The AAC doesn't have a set selection order, but past years suggest the Cure isn't in high demand. In two of the four years it's existed, the AAC didn't even send a team (not enough eligible), so the Cure got a 5-7 San Jose State and 6-6 Western Kentucky. The two times the AAC did send a team to the Cure, both were 6-6 (UCF in 2016, Tulane last year). Who knows, maybe UCF would opt to go this year since they're local, but it would certainly buck the trend.

Also, should Louisiana Tech win CUSA, I'd have to think they'd likely pick the New Orleans Bowl. Given that they're currently 7-1 and receiving votes in both polls, that could be a pretty appealing matchup.

I can give some insight to the AAC bowl process.

You were spot on. The conference has no pecking order per say. But what generally happens is that the best teams will push and likely be given the 2 or 3 tie ins (depending on the year) we have against P5 teams. Although the P5 vs G5 bowls are generally low on the selection order for the P5 conferences so there are times when they don't have enough teams to send to those so it ends up being against another G5.

So Birmingham and Military are usually the first to go. Then the rest is a mixture of geography to help with travel and ticket sales.

But the Cure has generally been last. The reason for this is because it's the only bowl game the AAC has that isn't an ESPN bowl. Its media deal is with CBSSN. The Boca bowl against the MAC is comparable in location and conference opponent but the TV coverage is better for the Boca than the Cure. Like you pointed out, it's why 6-6 UCF and Tulane were the American reps.

Yeah I thought about that ESPN point too. ESPN not only televises but also owns many (most?) of the smaller bowls. So if anyone’s thinking “if App goes to Orlando at 11-1 and ranked, maybe ESPN would pull some strings to get us a good opponent,” it’s actually the opposite. To the extent they’d be involved, they’d want the better or bigger-name teams in their games.
