5'9"as I recall.
He was listed at 5'9'', but he wasn't quite that tall. I'm 5'10" and he was at least 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches shorter than me.
5’8”

Do you think had we made a bowl that year App would have moved with ECU when they asked that we stay in I-A football and move out of the SoCon.

I have had stories the Peach Bowl had on on their radar and ECU wanted us to move out of the SoCon when they did at the start of the IA/IAA split that the SoCon fought for a few years.
ECU begged App to stay with them. Most thought we should have at the time. I believe it all worked out but it would be nice to see where we would be had we gone with them.

ECU didn't move up. App moved down.

Technically yes. I guess I worded it that way because when the division split we went one way and they went another but yes we moved down to I-AA. The funny thing is most, from what I was told, wanted to go with ECU and thought it was nuts. Then after a long time in I-AA many thought we should never move up because they feared we could not succeed. My how times have changed.

Not trying to pick nits but the SoCon didn't actually move to I-AA when it was first created. The NCAA split DI football to create I-AA in 1978 which generally coincides with ECU leaving the SoCon but the SoCon didn't move "down" to I-AA until 1981.

Can someone alive during this period give me some context to this game?

How big of an “upset” was this? My understanding is USC was independent at this time, between eras of ACC and now SEC football. What would this win be equitable to today? Still FCS team beating an FBS team?

Obviously the entire dynamic of college football has changed dramatically since 75, but I’m just curious.

It was big. It was big and this was in the days before Appalachian was big. Small stadium and a student body of less than 11,000.

I was there in '75. Moondog Davis was my pal. If I remember correctly, Joe was pre-season All-American punter and started lifting too many weights or something that changed his rhythm and he had a "down" season punting that year.

Then along came Abernathy.
There was a lot more to JP's punting numbers falloff than *weightlifting* unless we loosely re-define that term. I'll just leave it that football wasn't always among Joe's top priorities.

Hence why I wrote “SoCon fought for a few years.”

SoCon, Southland, and Ivy al put up a good fight for 3 years.

It was an upset but within the context of two significant wins early on against ECU and WFU (I was at both games!) It was thought App could win but probably would not. Sounds a bit......familiar.

That win was as BIG as our win at UNC. We were just a few years removed from playing in the NAIA. They had beaten Baylor which was a TOP 20 team. The win brought a lot of positive publicity to our "little" school. Also boosted the SoCon's rep!!! Lots of excitement on campus. After the game, a long-time Gamecock supporter bought 6 of us our first of many rounds! He stated that ours fans/students represented their school well and we deserved the win. Now let's do it again!!!

I never knew he was Moondog. We always called him "Garo" after Garo Yapremian with the Dolphins: soccer style and his name was Gary ergo, Garo. David Abernathy (his dad, same name, was an all-conference player also) could boot the ball! Square-toed shoe and straight ahead. He'd split the uprights in practice when we work on KO's and KO returns.

If I may Joe got into analyzing his form and motion and started thinking too much, rather than just lining up and punting. FYI for others here: Joe's first collegiate punt was a school record 70 yarder.

If memory serves me correct, we now officially hold a 2-1 advantage in our series/history with South Carolina.

I think it's 2-2. I seem to remember we lost to them earlier, won in '75, lost again the next year, then the win Saturday. I'm not certain but this seems to stick out in my mind.

Winsipedia has us plaing 10 times (not updated for yesterday.) According to this website we will be 2-8.

http://www.winsipedia.com/appalachian-s ... h-carolina

appstatesports.com only goes back to 85 for some reason but has this as the 4th game since then. 1-3 in that time span.

I know we lost to them in ‘73, ‘74, ‘76, ‘77, and ‘88. Won in ‘75 and last night.
