With Alabama almost guaranteed to miss the CFP, there’s a decent chance they’ll end up in the Cotton Bowl. Now I’m not gonna sit here and say I wouldn’t still hope for the best and be delighted with the bid...

But we may just dodge a national audience embarrassment. I know that’s not gonna be a popular opinion, but yeah. Going to the Cotton Bowl and playing a 2 loss Notre Dame team close is one thing. But I’m pretty comfortable admitting Alabama would mop the floor with us, which would suck.
True that! Never thought about this scenario even as farfetched as it is currently.

However, and I agree with you in this scenario....look at the bright side of the exposure playing Bama in a bowl game......not gonna happen but scary and funny to think about.

It would be a pity for any G5 to play Bama.
Totally agree with the exposure part. The lead up, pomp and circumstance would be tremendous for us. And hey, it would literally be house money. Massive blowout would be the expectation so the absolute worst case is you do what everyone expects. Play a close game or do the absolute impossible and win, and it would really help power us forward.

But yeah, worst case matchup for G5 teams an easy way for the P5’s to pull an “I told you so” after Bama drops 50+ on Memphis or Boise.

Getting to the Cotton Bowl would be a great achievement, but personally it would lose some of its luster if we got embarrassed.

Too many other teams that will be in the mix......
UGA should be out of CFP, so they'll be somewhere in that range (Utah may get in playoff?)
Oklahoma
Alabama
Baylor
Oregon maybe
Wisconsin maybe

It could be Alabama, but it depends how the SEC teams that don't make the playoffs line up. The highest ranked SEC team not in the playoffs will go to the Sugar Bowl. Second highest ranked outside the playoffs goes to the Orange bowl if they're higher than the next available Big 10 team that isn't in the Rose bowl. The Cotton bowl essentially gets G5 vs the highest ranked team that isn't already filling one of the tie in spots.

I think Hawaii can take Boise, so that'd def help but the AAC champion will probably get the nod unless something weird happens...the AAC chips just didn't fall the way we needed them to this year. Next year may be our year...
Boise hung 59 on Hawai’i earlier this year.
True, but from what I've seen Boise seems vulnerable.

Maybe we'll show up prepared and ready to play next time we see them.

I agree they’re vulnerable, but I don’t think Hawaii is the team to take advantage of that, especially traveling to the mainland. If Boise were playing SDSU I’d be more optimistic.

SBC, AAC, and MWC title games are all re-matches. That in and of itself is interesting as it adds a new dynamic to the game...which losing coaches can make adjustments and win the re-match.

First off.....Just win baby! Keep the chip! 1 - 0! Beat LaLa!

But on the bright side.....who would have thunk it.....that we would be having this kind of conversation 5 years ago.
Shoot I remember people on this board telling me my expectations were a bit too high when I said Drink just better not screw it up because we had no business only winning 8-9 games. We really should be undefeated if not for 3 missed assignments and bad weather. I said 10-2 should be worst case record in regular season. Some of us expected 11-1 or 12-0 regular season so you say who would have expected it 5 years ago but very few of us expected it 5 months ago.

It is a testament where we are but none of this matters if we don't finish strong. 13-1 and top 20 ranking is the expectation now. We can do this. #Finish #1-0 #BeatLala

I swore I’d never step foot in Paulson stadium again but I may do it to see the curb stomping they have coming next year.

🖕P5 bs and G5 relegation. We are better than all but 20-25 P5 teams and any given Sat we could beat most of them. We are deserving of D-1 FBS respect.

Hawaii has a lot of team speed, but they don’t have the strength to get in a drag out fight with Boise. Ideally, I’d love to see Hawaii hang a big number on Boise, keep it close or win, and we plaster ULL. That scenario could propel us....just not sure what to make of Cincinnati and Memphis. The best scenario going into the weekend is to have us ranked ahead of Boise because of their weak schedule (still not sure of their SOC), within 2 or so of Memphis, and have Cinci not in the Top 25 at all.

Similarly, perhaps going forward , the top should G5 get the top Bowl slot as current but 2-5 are seeded according to the CFP and paired up in existing , warm weather Bowls.

This is what I would like to see happen. Rotate the "champ vs. champ" bowls among 4-6 destination cities.

The CFP is going to be interesting because they clearly don't just slot teams and will punish a team for bad performances bad dropping them despite a win. I am thinking we really have no shot at the NY6 as the winner of the AAC will go but I guess if it is super close and Boise loses while we win big that we may have an outside shot. Boise wins big and Memphis loses and maybe Boise gets it but who knows. I think the CFP rankings will be interesting for sure. I'm hopeful Cincy drops to 24-25 or out while we move up 4 spots and Boise perhaps drops just below us. If Memphis is say 16 and Boise is 18-20 ahead of us and either of them loses we are done for sure.

Maybe UNC trouncing NC State and getting bowl eligible will help our positioning with the committee as far as SOS.

I'm not so sure Boise will be ranked ahead of us at this point.
