CFP Ranking/Bowl Watch - 12/8
It’s CFP ranking time. 10 minutes until we find out our destiny. Figured I’d get a new clean thread going for last minute speculation and reactions.
Lets go!
Lets go!

By starting a new thread to become a top poster (new app/jcline). Poorly delivered joke on my part.

Re: CFP Ranking/Bowl Watch - 12/8
I realized that about 20 seconds into the ESPN broadcast haha.
I do see we are 20 in both Coaches and AP. I’m a little shocked to see Cincinnati still there. A 3 loss G5 team.
It’s pretty clear that outside of us and Boise, it’s the AAC and a bunch of nobodies.

Yes, and Navy who was losing 35-3 at halftime but is ranked 7 spots below the team that beat them like a drum.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:31 pmI realized that about 20 seconds into the ESPN broadcast haha.

I don't get it. Navy hasn't beaten anyone of note other than SMU who also didn't beat anyone of note. If Sun Belt schools could schedule like the AAC our SoR would be better too

It’s all about OOC wins and P5 wins. The more damage the Sunbelt can do outside the conference, the stronger we look.ericsaid wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:39 pmYes, and Navy who was losing 35-3 at halftime but is ranked 7 spots below the team that beat them like a drum.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:31 pmI realized that about 20 seconds into the ESPN broadcast haha.

CUSA has 5 teams with 8 wins or more. We have 2. But CUSA lost every OOC game they played and all their wins came internally so everyone just thinks the conference is trash and they all cannibalized each other.

Many voters are looking at the record and feel like you have to drop when you lose. Cincy is better than Navy for sure. It goes to show that the rankings truly mean nothing.ericsaid wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:39 pmYes, and Navy who was losing 35-3 at halftime but is ranked 7 spots below the team that beat them like a drum.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:31 pmI realized that about 20 seconds into the ESPN broadcast haha.

Cincy is a top 25 team who has 3 losses both to #2 and #15. They lost by 5 points to #15. Cincy should really be about 19-21 and ahead of Navy for sure. Navy has no business in the top 25. Cincy does not have a loss to an unranked team like we do and they have a win over a ranked team right now. That is why they are still ranked.

• The Sun Belt built on its non-conference success from a year ago with 22 regular-season wins and the third-best winning percentage among the Group of Five conferences.
1. American - 33-14 (.702)
2. Mountain West - 29-18 (.617)
3. Sun Belt - 22-18 (.550)
4. Conference USA - 24-32 (.429)
5. Mid-American - 18-30 (.375)
MAC and CUSA are bad leagues. SBC is really not good overall if you exclude App State. We are propping the league up. There is a small gap between us and the MWC and the AAC is the kings of the G5 level. If we want to get more respect for 12-1 or even 13-0 then our league needs to have more like a 30-10, 25-15, or 28-12 type record in OOC next year.

But if the rankings are meaningless, than a win based on where a team falls in a Top 25 poll is meaningless, otherwise Notre Dame would be ranked Top 8. They smoked the 21st team in the country.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:47 pmMany voters are looking at the record and feel like you have to drop when you lose. Yes, but while the Sun Belt is playing Penn State, UGA, Alabama, Clemson, etc. The AAC is playing Oregon State, Ole Miss, Stanford, Pitt, etc.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:46 pmIt’s all about OOC wins and P5 wins. Re: CFP Ranking/Bowl Watch - 12/8
I put a lot more weight in the top 10-15 but after that they often just look at the record. Still though I don't think we should put much stock because there are not huge gaps past the top 10. With that said, I think Notre Dame would smoke those in the 20-25 range right now. I would personally think Notre Dame is more like 9-12 type team and Navy should be 26-30 range. If Navy played Virginia, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Southern Cal I would expect them to lose by 7-14 in those games. Navy is a solid team but we struggled against the option with GSU. We better do a lot better or else a matchup with them would probably not be in our favor. Can't make the mental errors that we did in a game like that.ericsaid wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:53 pmBut if the rankings are meaningless, than a win based on where a team falls in a Top 25 poll is meaningless, otherwise Notre Dame would be ranked Top 8. However, Outside of the stats/scores, I will say that the AAC is just better too to bottom. When I watch the AAC, it looks like big time football.
Their top 3 are > our top 3.
But their bottom half is >>>>>>>>> to the Sunbelt bottom half.
I think that’s the difference maker. UCONN and ECU suck but I’m pretty confident (4-8): Houston, USF or Tulsa would beat:
ULM
Texas State
Troy
Arkansas State
Coastal
USA
Probably beat Ga State
Toss up with Ga Southern
Lose to us and UL.
That’s the big difference for me.

Those records are just this year. ASU played UGA but nobody from the league played Alabama, Penn State, or Clemson this year.ericsaid wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:55 pmYes, but while the Sun Belt is playing Penn State, UGA, Alabama, Clemson, etc. The AAC is playing Oregon State, Ole Miss, Stanford, Pitt, etc.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:46 pmIt’s all about OOC wins and P5 wins. They big name P5s played by the SBC this year are UGA, South Carolina, UNC, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Miss St, Florida St, Kansas, Minnesota. I would say UGA, Minnesota, and A&M are the real good ones from that group. FSU, UNC, and MSU are very solid ones.
Look at the AAC vs SBC too.
SMU 37 Arkansas St 30
SMU 47 Texas St 17
Memphis 42 South Alabama 6
Memphis 52 ULM 33
Western Michigan beat Ga St 57-10 and UAB beat Tennessee 35-3 but we did own the MAC and CUSA for the most part.
What we do know is that we really need to see App and ULL face someone like SMU, Cincy, Navy, Boise St to find out who is truly better.

SMU played Texas State and Memphis played the last place team in the Sun Belt. They also beat Monroe by 19, a team App beat by 45.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 1:13 pmThose records are just this year. UAB lost to Tennessee 35-3, I thought? They didn't play USC.
The Sun Belt's P5 line-up, collectively, is far more difficult than what the AAC deals with. I'd also argue our G5 match-ups are more in line with what you'd like to see.
