I just reviewed the list of incentives for Coach Drink. His guaranteed base for this year is $750K. He will receive an additional $25K for every win beyond 9, $25K for winning the SB East, $50K for winning the SB Championship, and $25K for making a bowl game.
So, he already has an additional $100K coming his way, and could make it another $75K if we get the win on Saturday. That would motivate me to be remain focused.

So he’s at $825,000 now and a win on Saturday gets him to $900,000. And we talk about if given a P5 offer he would have to take it for the money. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve said it myself. But it really seams crazy to say anybody making that kind of money would have to take another job for the money. Good for him and his family and all those other coaches who have made this happen for themselves.

Satterfield went from $713k base to $3.25m base before incentives (can top out at 4.48m). Drink can top out slightly above $1m by winning the CFP.

For a few short years after I graduated from college I wasn't as concerned about money as much as I was about the practical experience. That quickly changed and for many years I have been it solely for the money. The money these dudes make is just beyond our realm of practical comprehension (at least it is for most of us). It is really easy to ask why a coach would leave for more money. That seems like a silly question to ask when you honestly think about it. I have read many folks talk about how comfortably a man and his family could live in Boone on just under a Mil per year. That is life altering money not life changing money. P5 head coach is life changing money.

And $750,000 to $900,000 wouldn’t motivate you? I have often noted that folks go buy lottery tickets when the pot gets to some crazy number like $600,000,000. but they don’t buy tickets when its at $40,000,000. Cause $40,000,000 just wouldn’t be enough. I’m not trying to make some type of moral statement, I just find it interesting that we make out like $750,000/year is chump change.

I think it is all relative. I have scoffed at some professional athletes who (probably their agent more likely) hold out or leave a team to go from $10M per year for $15M per year and possibly going from a winner to a loser. I think that they value the paycheck more than winning. Easy for me to say obviously. I believe that strike while the iron is hot sums it all up. Drink might absolutely love where is at but what if he turns down incredible offers, stays here and we go 7-5 next year and 6-6 the year after that. He ain't gonna be a hot commodity after that. Iron gets very cold at that point.

He took this job for 2 reasons. 1. To be a head coach. 2. A ready made team who he could quickly parlay into a P5 job. 2. Make life changing money for his family within 3 years or so. I think a P5 AD would be crazy to hire someone after just 1 year as a G5 HC but if he gets a 5-year 3.2M/year offer he will and should take it. I personally would want a good situation because I would want to be there for a long time but most people with families just want to strike while the iron is hot. Like someone else said, that iron can cool down quickly. I don't care if I bust or not. Offer me that much money and I'll give you my all but I will know that no matter what I'm set for life.

I tend to agree. Unless i'm being offered by Boston College and want to bet on myself to earn a better offer the next year, which he almost undoubtedly will.

If anyone wants to go in it with me we could probably bribe him with a nice, customized BBQ Pit trailer:
