Bowl TV Ratings

Not a bad showing for us. A hair short of a million sets of eyeballs watched. Our game was 5th out of 8 games last week, 9 if you count the FCS game.

Of the cable games (non ABC broadcasts) ours was the second most watched.

I’d be curious to see what the ratings may have been if we didn’t start at 9:36pm on the East coast.

It's down from last year's NO Bowl. (963k vs. 1.37 Million)

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/colleg ... ratings/2/

Of course, so is:

Las Vegas Bowl (2.6 Mil vs. 3.3 Mil)
The Celebration Bowl (1.8 Mil vs. 2.34 Mil)
Frisco Bowl (1.24 Mil vs. 1.44 Mil)
Bahamas Bowl (739k vs. 838k)
New Mexico Bowl (802k vs. 968k)

Boca Raton is up because it went from ESPN to ABC.

Too many bowl games IMOp. It's like watermelon. I love watermelon, but I wouldn't want to eat 40 of them.

I don't believe there are "too many bowls". Watch the Bahamas Bowl or the Frisco Bowl and tell me there's too many bowls. Like, actually watch them.

Football fans that complain about too many bowls confuse me.

But he just said he did not want to watch that many bowl games. There is a difference between not watching a good bowl game for a stupid reason like a potential viewer not thinking the schools are worthy but that is different that just not wanting to watch something due to being at a limit.

I could live with less bowls but don't mind what we have now. If there would be a retraction in the number of bowl games I would want it to be across all the conferences and not allowing the Prig5 conferences to get 75% of their schools in a bowl but the Great5 conferences getting 20%. If there are cuts it needs to be at the same level for all of FBS.

What would it look like to be 7-5 or 8-4 to qualify? I could live with that.

Well, what really made this year's ratings down is that it was a week further into December than last year. Dec 15th vs. Dec 21st. People were already traveling out of town for the holidays.

And for the New Orleans Bowl specifically: LA Rams vs. San Fran 49ers that started an hour before NO bowl kickoff.

I think that is right in both accounts, the 21st vs 15th and starting later 9:36 vs 9 and starting in ESPNews vs ESPN..... all played a factor. The question is when will we play our first game on ABC?

I didn't even think about it starting on ESPNews. That definitely would do it too.

maybe the silver lining of starting on espn news was only a limited audience saw “the bad part”

:D

FWIW, we played East Carolina on ABC back in the mid to late ‘70’s

Thanksgiving Day in either 76 or 77 if my memory isn’t failing me. I went to the game.

We are 1-3 on ABC. Not sure if I want to pass on ABC or get on there to improve our record. We are better on CBS.

I just downloaded the 2019 media guide as I knew there is a list of all televised games. And unless Thanksgiving was in a different month I don't think the first Thanksgiving game on TV was 1996 hosting VMI

Here are the first 6 TV games.

Oct. 20, 1976 ABC at East Carolina L, 35-7
Oct. 18, 1978 ABC at Western Carolina W, 39-13
Sept. 22, 1979 ESPN Western Carolina W, 35-27
Oct. 25, 1980 ABC Furman L, 21-20
Serpt. 26, 1981 ABC at The Citadel L, 34-20
Sept. 23, 1983 CBS at The Citadel W, 27-16

Agreed. I, for one, like having plenty of options to watch. I also love the gluttony of college football in those last 3 weeks or so before we have to go without for 8 months. I love bowl season.

I went back to the guide myself and it shows at East Carolina on November 20, 1976 but thanksgiving that year was November 25th. I could have sworn that the game was on thanksgiving. Of course my memory isn’t what it used to be!

If I’m not mistaken, I believe ABC televised games were regionally televised, much like NFL games are. So while we may have been on ABC, we weren’t getting shown in Independence, Missouri, or anywhere else outside of the Carolinas. But I was, like, three at the time, so I’m just going on my understanding of what I’ve been told.

Soooo, I am eagerly awaiting a Nationally televised game on ABC that is deemed blimp-worthy.

I cut and pasted from the Media Guide PDF file so if it is showing Oct 20 here but 20 Nov in a different listing I assume the TV list is a mistake/typo that no one has ever caught.

Correct in that it was a regional broadcast more than likely but regional may have been more than just the 5 or 6 TV markets around North Carolina. It may have been one of 4 games in the nation that day on ABC so it may have reached Independence, Missouri, but not Independence, California.

I was 7 at the time my young whipper snapper so I am guessing on this as well, but I just wanted to type whipper snapper.

I watched it on WXEX Channel 8 Richmond/Petersburg.

That’s one market north of the Raleigh-Durham market, so you might be right, but that’s still in the traditional ACC market.

I remember when WXEX became WRIC back in the mid 80s and moved out on the Powhite Extension.

You are probably right. I was a curtain crawler, who had yet reach whipper snappers status.
