Nike Mountaineer Football Gear

Not sure who else has been following but the bookstore is trying to get in an order of those really cool script Mountaineer sweatshirts (and I think Nike TIGMA shirts too) that were seen during the USC game. This process has been going on since at least mid-November 2019 and whenever I call asking for an update, they just say Nike is dragging their feet and don't have a date to give. I've also heard athletics is being really stingy with this too. Which seems weird due to the money that could be made off these? I understand certain things being 'exclusive' for coaches/players but the sweatshirt never seemed to be that. Maybe make them a Yosef Club gift at a certain level if you really want them exclusive? Anyone else have info on this?

Pretty sure that for any additional orders of Nike gear the athletic department has to pay wholesale cost. With as tight a budget as everyone says I doubt they want to spend money when it’s not certain what the actual ROI would be.

Not buying Nike at all seems like a pretty good direction. Lots of other companies make App gear

I never buy app gear that is Nike made. Wish they'd move to another company.

No. Being a Nike school is a recruiting tool.

UA is not cool.

I've yet to find any App gear made by Under Armour, but everything I've bought that wasn't Nike was pretty much junk.

Absolutely 100% disagree.

Agree or disagree with Nike's business practices but they are the #1 athletics apparel & shoe company. Being a Nike school gives us an edge in recruiting and adds a "cool factor" to our brand.

App is 125% not allowed to do that because of the licensing agreement with Nike. You could personally try to get someone to print an Appalachian logo on something but they probably won’t do it because you have to have permission from the school and to make money (Aka print the shirts) off of a licensed logo. More of your questions can be answered with a quick google search and by visiting https://licensing.appstate.edu/

Same here. I have App gear made by others, including UA, Cutter & Buck, Retro, Champion, Comfort Colors, Columbia, etc., and most of those pieces are fine - no real complaints and I wear them quite a bit. If I'm being picky it would be that sometimes you have issues with the yellow/gold colorway we use. On the non-Nike gear you often find the color coming across as a straight yellow or off-gold and that's just not a problem you have much these days with Nike gear and the "University Gold" directive, though we once saw it quite a bit, even with Nike gear. That having been said, on football gamedays I only wear Nike. If it's good enough to be our official supplier on the field then it's good enough for me to be my official brand in the stands. If we were a UA or adidas school then I'd follow suit but I've yet to have a single problem from any Nike produced App branded gear I own, outside of normal wear and tear or mistakes in washing/ironing or that sort of thing on my end. I have probably 30 or 40 Nike pieces in the arsenal and have went through and retired/sold/trashed probably 30 or 40 more. The quality has become even better since it seems our deal with Nike has improved, allowing for us to not have to do as much of the sewn-in applique logo stuff via the third-party providers. As long as we never make the move to that god-awful Colosseum stuff I'll be all in with the official stuff. I've been gifted a few pieces of App Colosseum gear from those with no wherewithal and I've yet to find any good use for the stuff...cheap garbage that might as well just be Wal-Mart branded.

Dude I have App gear from under armor and several other manufactures. We don’t have a exclusive agreement with Nike. In fact about 10 years ago my wife was selling cheerleading uniforms and we worked with the school to make the block A. We made and donated the cheerleading uniforms.

Any of y'all who lament that we change our uniforms around too much better pray we never move to UA or especially Adidas. Outside of their guinea pigs in Eugene, Nike is by far the most measured in uniform design of the big three apparel companies.

My GF has an App tank top made by UA. Bought it from the bookstore a few seasons ago.

It was my understanding that Nike's exclusivity contract pertains to what our players wear on the field, but not necessarily items available for fan purchase. If no one outside of Nike were allowed to produce App gear we wouldn't have several stores devoted especially to App gear all over Boone stocked with other brands. I agree with others in that the Nike-brand App gear I've owned has been of much higher quality than others.

We will and should never stray from our contract with Nike as far as student athlete uniforms go. They make the best stuff. If you can't wait for the official threads from Nike I'm sure you can grab a pull over made by someone else that shrinks at the neck and cuffs like the POS, non-Nike, crew-neck sweatshirt I wasted my money all in 2018. Literally wore it once.

I have a UA App shirt that I probably wear once a week. I’ve had it for at least a couple of years and it still looks good. The cutter buck stuff is cheap. I have several things made by UA and all have worn well and look good.

My bad everyone. I am wrong and only the teams stuff is exclusively Nike. I would imagine don’t see any other manufactures jerseys or team gear if because of this

Edit: I went back and looked for the contract and it states the Nike is the exclusive brand of the covered teams which are football men’s and women’s basketball as well as the athletic department as a whole. Because I was wrong about it being the supplier of the university as a whole I linked the contract that I got the details from
