Michigan at #19. We're more than that game, but it shows how far the program has gone in the last 15 years.

The biggest issue with a four-team playoff, from my vantage point, is that there is a consolidation of recruiting power among few schools. There are more 5-Star recruits going to fewer programs than ever before and they do so because of that Championship opportunity and how it's condensed to really Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, LSU, and Georgia/Oklahoma.

Going to 8-teams could conceivably open up recruiting and opportunities for other programs to really have more of a shot at some of those guys that are no coalescing around a few bright lights.
Given that the AP writers and CFP committee sees the ceiling for G5s in the mid-teens that's true only if the G5 has a guaranteed spot to get in. Otherwise it'll just be power consolidated to the top 8 instead of the top 4. A guaranteed spot means Shawn Clark can go into a kid's home and say "we were on the cusp last year and have a legitimate shot to make the playoff next year with your help".

This is such a major accomplishment. When I was in school I couldn’t imagine the day where at the end of a season our Mountaineers would be officially recognized as one of the top 20 football programs in ALL of college football at the highest level. Ahead of programs like Texas and Southern Cal. So proud of our program and university.
Me as well, very proud. Before the I-AA days the highlights were the '75 team, Joe Parker Playboy
All-American, and '79 Rick Beasley leading? the country in receptions and being named 2nd
Team AP All American.

Wonder what ole Roach is thinking now? Back in the 70's he told me we would NEVER be able to compete with Wake year-in and year-out.

That's a very good point, along with the same conferences routinely getting that massive payout. The rich continue to get richer.

Is this socialism football?
The NCAA is a non-profit organization that helps organize college athletics, an amateur sport. The socialism moniker as it relates to how a non-profit is run really irks me.

I'm far from a socialist but this is the NCAA and a setting that promotes amateurism as the way to maintain the purity of the sport. Drop the amateur label and I'll gladly accept the current format as passable but until then let's not pretend like the 4-team playoff doesn't have drawbacks that are easily seen. This is something that's painfully obvious to me and it could easily be addressed with playoff expansion.

Ideally, you'd have someone with more time, who gets paid, to test the hypothesis I proposed and if its fails to prove me wrong, put the information out there to institute change, for better or for worse.

Perhaps. I wasn't speaking about G5 programs gaining access insomuch as saying that other P5 programs would have more access. Programs like Texas and USC were at the top or always competing at the top not that long ago and they continue to trend down, despite expectations. Why is that? The PAC-12 and Big 12 have a massive disadvantage when recruiting for those big name kids now due to the structure.

You may see turnover at the top happen but it will be very, very, very slow and won't change much year over year.

The '75 team holds bittersweet memories for me. I had just graduated and gotten my first job. Became a member of the Yosef Club at the $100 level. My company matched my donation and I got credit for $300.
We went on to beat Wake, USC and, as Coach used to say, East. Loved beating the Pirates as a high school teammate of mine played on the line for them. Then the debacle against ccc. Two starters for them were guys I had played with since Pop Warner. Needless to say, they gave me the business. One of the worst App defeats I can remember.

We are the 19th best team in the country. That’s amazing, and we don’t need to pull some voodoo Massey/Sagarin rankings to prove it.

This is the reason we moved up.
This is an exceptional accomplishment.
This is a result of great leadership.
This is a stratosphere above an FCS championship.
We are a program surrounded by the likes of Michigan, Iowa, Memphis and Cincinnati. Not Wofford and the toothpaste school.
We can’t be stopped.

Go App Go.

There were earlier discussions about playoff expansion in this thread and there's a USA Today article today discussing it and Ark State's Blake Anderson is quoted and mentions us.

I'm with him up until the scheduling part. No way the conference championship games should be eliminated. I don't know what he's thinking there but it makes zero sense to me.

There are all kinds of ideas and arguments for and against expansion. No idea will ever be 100% accepted. It will be akin to the NCAA basketball tournament which is mostly loved by everyone, except the handful of average teams who get left out every year. Some think that the field needs to be expanded to 100 or so teams. That is crazy. If you go 20-10 in a bad conference you don't deserve to play.

As far as football goes i never get the part about the conference champions being in the first group. To me that is a ridiculous criteria. Had Virginia knocked off Clemson this year they would have been in the playoff (if there was expansion). Eliminate the conference championship games and substitute the first round of the playoffs to include all of the regular season conference champions from each league. Let the playoff committee decide the top 3 teams and give them a bye. If one of these teams is a conference champion then select a wildcard and if all 3 of the bye teams are champions select 3 wildcards. After round 1 you are left with 8 teams who then play each other in the 4 major bowls with the winners moving on. Theoretically the 5 G5's would possibly lose in round 1 because they are playing P5 conference champions or highly ranked second place finishers- if they are that good. So this year the bye teams would have been LSU, Clemson and Ohio State. The teams replacing them could have been Georgia, Alabama and Utah. Obviously there would need to be a criteria to determine the regular season champion and if the NCAA doesn't mind the extra games just keep the conference championship games to determine who plays in the first round but this just adds too much extra time for players.

Laney said things like that back in the 90s and early 2000s as well. He thought he would never be able to compete in I-A. That is a good thought. Wonder what he is thinking? It would be funny to know. He was an incompetent little man who is not irrelevant to App, thank goodness. We would have never played SC, UNC, etc and still would not have played Wake Forest again. We would be hoping we could just compete with JMU and get past the semis right now if we stayed the course with Laney's vision.

Here we are having a positive discussion and someone brings up Laney. I get pissed every time I read his name...
