App St Players at All-Star Games; Congrats to 2 NFL Combine invites

Unread post by AppStFan1 » Tue Jan 21, 2020 9:28 am

Congrats to Akeem Davis-Gaither for getting invited to the NFL Combine and to Evans, who will be getting his in the next 10 days or so. Glad for them. They deserve it.

Victor Johnson measured 6040 (6'4), 285 pounds at the NFLPA Bowl. He had 10 inch hands, 35 3/4 arms, and a 85 inch wingspan. He is too light but very long. Johnson will not go to the NFL Combine and will not get drafted.

Jordan Fehr measured 6016 (6'1 3/4), 230 pounds at the NFLPA Bowl. He had 10 inch hands, 32 1/2 arm length, and 79 inch wingspan. Fehr looked good physically and he has a 50/50 at getting drafted. Keep an eye on his pro day results and if he has any private workouts and team visits. I am told he did not get enough votes to go to the NFL Combine.

Akeem Davis-Gaither- He measured at 6014 (6'1 1/2), 219 pounds at the Senior Bowl. He is well put together. Very impressive physique. 9 inch hands, 31 3/8 arm length, and 75 3/4 wingspan.

Surprised Josh Thomas did not get an invite to Shrine or NFLPA.

As of now hearing Gaither is a round 3-4 projection and Evans is a 4-5 projection but could slide to 5-6 if he does not have a great workout or it is a major numbers game.

For what it's worth...Josh Thomas did participate in the College Gridiron Showcase. It was held the first week of January in Fort Worth, Texas.

Yes he did but he should have been in the NFLPA or Shrine. Those are the #2 and #3 games and he belonged in one of those. CGS is ran very well but considered tied for #4 with the Tropical Bowl and Hula Bowl.

Evans won big with about 4-5 key RBs returning to school. If he can test well he may sneak into the 4th or super late 3rd. When I said 5-6 projection before I figured all those who came out would along with Etienne from Clemson, Najee Harris, Hubbard, and Kylin Hill returning alone should help him go a round higher than he would have before.

I got the CGS measurements for Josh Thomas and he was 5111 (5'11), 212 pounds. He had a 9 3/8 hand, 29 7/8 arm, and 74 1/8 wingspan.

I'm told he did pretty well and indeed was one of the better ones at the game. Georgia State QB Dan Ellington was also there.

PFF has ADG as their 61st prospect on the board and looks like so far he’s met with Ravens, Bears, and Raiders down in Mobile. Hard to see him making it past day 2 of the draft.

PFF said O'Connell that massive 340 pound OG from Washington State was the best guard in the draft one year and he went undrafted and did not make it. I would take them with a grain of salt. Remember that all these ratings are just opinions by people not making the selections.

PFF does some really good stat packages but their ratings are really bad and are stat based. If they did true talent evaluation and not stat rankings they would be able to give proper grades to D2 kids but they don't because they have no clue how to judge the level in talent. PFF was started by nerds who never played the game.

With that said, there is a good chance he goes top 100 as long as he does well at the combine and Senior Bowl. His analytics numbers are very good, which is why PFF has him high. I was hearing 3rd-5th round was the grades my buddy said people gave him. He is 219 pounds now and people don't think his frame is going to gain a ton of weight early on and maintain speed. I was told some scouts thought he had a better junior year but I don't know anyone at App who felt that way. He was really good this year.

My question is who goes first between him and Evans. Evans got a huge break with 4 big name junior RBs staying in school. He went from 5-6 to possibly 4th round right now and could sneak in the top 100 if he kills it at the combine as well.

You know I was trying to think of a legitimate pro comp for Evans while watching the 49ers vs. GB and boom there it is: Raheem Mostert. Elite track speed with big time return abilities. It's quite the coincidence that they went to the same high school (albeit quite a few years apart). When Evans shows out at the combine it will bolster his draft position. Not only is he going to kill the drills I have every confidence he and his 1000W smile are going shine in the interviews.

I was actually talking to someone the other day about how Mostert reminded me of Evans. Very similar running style and body type. He would make a great addition in a similar offense to the 49ers.

I agree Evans should do well in the interviews. I am thinking he and ADG both test well. I have not heard what kind of numbers they are doing in training. Anyone on here heard anything?

Davis-Gaither Senior Bowl practice Day 1

Best player: Akeem Davis-Gaither, Appalachian State

A safety-linebacker hybrid, Akeem Davis-Gaither was flying all over the field in the South team drills Tuesday. His speed and range in space immediately stood out, and he quickly asserted himself as the top cover linebacker on the South squad in the one-on-one drills against tight ends and running backs. In team drills, Davis-Gaither played everything from inside linebacker to slot defender, aligned across several spots in the defense, and looked incredibly poised handling these various roles. Whether it was quickly chasing down a screen play or running vertically with TEs in man coverage, Davis-Gaither showed people the traits he displayed on tape and why he is worthy of becoming a top-100 selection.

I got bored yesterday and watched the South team practice and his speed really does pop off the screen. He had an amazing diving pass break up. My favorite play of his though was against a run play: the RB went to the first hole saw ADG waiting and tried to cut back across the line and ADG calmly with his head up sifted through the scrum and again was waiting on the RB and squared him up. He is making money this week and lots of it!

Day 2 comments from Denver camp:
While it is hard for off ball linebackers to stand out, Akeem Davis-Gaither caught my eye with some good coverage, and a tipped ball in 7-on-7s. He is a bit of a tweener at 6’1” 220lbs, but good be a good sub linebacker at the next level.

From NFL.com article on Day 3:

Two different AFC scouts made mention of Appalachian State's Akeem Davis-Gaither, an undersized linebacker who could make a rookie impact as a coverage linebacker and on special teams. Both said Davis-Gaither's speed and instincts will make him an attractive selection, one who will prove to be "a third- and fourth-down player."

More good press for ADG: named South team top LB by Jim Navy executive director of the Senior Bowl. We all know how great this young man is but I love that he has gone down there and played/practiced like he had something to prove! His draft stock is only trending upward.

The "cut out of a block of granite" comment kind of describes what teams are saying physically as well. First thing I had one of my contacts tell me was "your app state LB is very well put together" in a team. Gaither has definitely helped himself. If he could have a really good NFL combine he should just do position drills and interviews at the pro day and then any visits and private workouts teams want.

NFLPA does not have the same caliber of talent it use to. Last year the game was awful and this year it is a little bit better but a lot of tryout players, according to my scout buddy.

This below is my opinion on Fehr and Johnson from last week. Victor Johnson did not have a good NFLPA Bowl. He only weighed 285 and he looks like his ankle may still be tender. He was not strong at all and just looked like a camp body. Better against the run as a zone blocker or just kicking people out and using length. He is not a mauler or finisher much at all. His problem is he lacks guard bulk and tackle height. Fehr played much better. Limited in space and does not cover well but good in the box and near the line of scrimmage. He tackles well and is very instinctive and smart. He does not look like he would get drafted for sure based on the game but he should at least be a PFA.

NFL announced combine invites today so formally seeing it released for Evans and Gaither is great to see. It has obviously been expected for a while. I'm told Fehr got some votes but not near enough. Victor Johnson did not get any votes for the combine.
