Liberty series

Unread post by appst89 » Fri Jan 24, 2020 9:25 am

This is a new thread for discussion of the upcoming football series between App and Liberty.

The other one died peacefully in its sleep after it was overcome by politics and religion.

Anyone, anywhere, anytime. If it was BYU, TCU, SMU, we would be celebrating. I know there is a difference but same argument. This is America, freedom of religion as well, no need to hurt our Apps and not support over a school that is different in ideology. Honestly, Carolina does more to harm our school then Liberty times 100, didn’t hear anything about that matchup. Anyway, I’m glad we are playing them, that loss in KBS was probably the lowest point in the last 20 years of App FB, I would like payback.

Losing to Liberty is the low point of our FBS tenure so far, but we are 100% in control of whether they spoil anything in our future. I say we just crush them on both fields and leave nothing to chance.

In reference to some posts in the other thread, I don't think Lynchburg, VA is dry. Lynchburg, TENNESSEE is dry (with the distillery).

I gave my thoughts on the other thread. I will say that, as much as I dislike this series for non-football reasons, from a purely football perspective I think it’s fine.

I for one, will like the easy drive up to Lynchburg to cheer us on as we collect a road win. Also, perhaps hammering them at home will help to erase the nightmare of the last time they came to Boone...still not at peace with that game even though we were in a provisional year of transition.

I am assuming we are still looking for a home FCS and an away G5 for 2025

My bad, your correct, don’t know what I was thinking.

From a purely football perspective, this is not a series that excites me one bit.

There are about 120 FBS programs I’d rather do a H&H with PURELY from a football perspective.

EJ revealed yesterday that this is a true home and home with no traditional wad of collection plate cash that we were expecting. IMO the only real defense to this scheduling move was the assumption that they’d be paying us $1 mil+ for the pleasure like they’ve done with so many other opponents. Without touching the politics, it’s fair to say that Liberty is famous nation wide and it isn’t for sports. I find it hard to believe that every other G5 was unavailable. This was an inexplicable move in which we gain nothing and stand to lose good will with our students, alumni, and others for needlessly associating with Liberty, given their repeated examples of conduct and their reputation.

I think they're a pretty solid program already with the resources to stay good or get better, it's drivable, etc. Football-only, I'd rather play them than probably anyone in the MAC, certainly UMass, the lower-tier MWC and the far-away parts of CUSA.

I've made the ODU comparison elsewhere bc it's the most obvious one to me geographically, but really I'd have taken anyone in CUSA East over Liberty, and that's obviously just for starters and before you consider the non-football issues.

I also wonder if we gave any consideration to an intersectional series like the one GS just signed with Fresno.

I mentioned Amtrak in the other thread that was deleted.

If 6 or 7 wanted to make a group trip of it it could be done at a discount.

I want to do this with an App pennant in my hand and a beanie hat (propeller optional) on my head.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

Eh it’s a regional g5 game a but not one that makes my socks roll up and down. I’d like to see some American conference opponents

I am fine with this agreement. It is regional.

It takes two to make a deal. But asking from a purely football standpoint. Would you rather have Liberty, which is a so close you can drive road game within our geographical recruiting footprint; or would you rather have a Fresno St., which is across the country and less likely to attract an away crowd for either participant and has very little positive affect on recruiting?

They cannot be taken lightly. Their coach is former SEC. Their AD is former Big 12. They have a player in the Senior Bowl. The school's founder stated the goal of Liberty being like Notre Dame in football. High goals, lots of cash and a recruiting rival.

As much as I’d love to see us play an AAC team, outside of ECU, I think they stay away from us like the plague. Their main goal each year is to have a team in the cotton bowl, and with as much parity in their conference of who that could be, they aren’t going to risk that with an out of conference loss to App or Louisiana Lafayette. They don’t want their best losing to us, or have us stomp a mud hole in one of their lower teams. This series with ECU is probably going to be the last we see of an AAC team at the sun belt level. We can only play the teams that agree to play us.

Also, LaLa played Liberty at home this past year and travel to Lynchburg in 2021. I couldn’t find anything about money with their contract, but it was first announced in 2017.

Lynchburg, VA is not a dry town. I travel there for work and my girls' field hockey often. Its a nice little city, nothing special or unique, other than Liberty being there. I don't much care for LU but I do like Lynchburg quite a bit.

My vote is 3 pages before this thread too becomes like all the others.
