Re: Most memorable play ever?
There certainly are a lot of great moments in this thread, but for me, the single biggest play is the Lynch block. It put us on the map and got similar airplay to the Clowney hit.
As for the biggest actual hit, I have to agree with Armanti steamrolling the dude at GA Southern (that was actually going to be my response to the r/CFB thread, but I couldn't find a video). I remember seeing him around campus and thinking they were being pretty generous with his listed height and possibly his weight. The amount of force that dude was able to muster with his frame, and his ability to bounce off of a hit, were just unreal. That play epitomized his toughness and was an exclamation point in a rivalry game.

Either Lynch's block at Michigan or the Miracle on the Mountain. Probably the latter to me since I was present for that and remember how deafening and crazy the stadium was when that happened.

Not "most memorable play" but how about a most memorable single performance? October 9, 2004 Richie Williams vs #2 Furmson. Final score App 30, Furmson 29.

Richie was 40-45 for 413 yards. I was able to speak to him after the game and told him it was the best QB performance I had ever seen in Kidd Brewer. Of course, that was before Armanti.scatman77 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 8:42 amNot "most memorable play" but how about a most memorable single performance? Totally agree; before AE it was the single best QB performance anyone had ever seen in Conrad/KBS.Appsolutely wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:00 amRichie was 40-45 for 413 yards. Re: Most memorable play ever?
For me, it was the forced fumble on the running back against JMU in the 2007 Playoffs, first round. JMU had basically marched, unopposed, in the running game for a period of time and they were setting up for a game winning field goal, needing one more run to essentially run the clock down; many people believed that they didn't need it, but hindsight is 20/20. Either way, I believe Pierre Banks put his helmet right on the ball, it squirted out, and was recovered, App runs out the clock and wins 28-27.
Easily the most overlooked play of 2007.
Another one is more obscure and seemingly inconsequential but the Armanti fumble, scoop, fumble, avoid a sack, toss to Cedric Boney-Baker who gained around 18 yards, I believe, against Samford. That one was fun.
A play of personal interest was a touchdown pass to Nic Cardwell up the seam against Wofford on Halloween night. I was a senior in high school, my dad went to the beach and my friends bailed on going up the mountain, so I went to the game by myself (lived in Hudson). Sitting in the stands, before the play I see the safeties spread to the hashes, and say out loud (mostly to myself) to go to the tight end up the seam, 5 second later it's a touchdown up the seam. Received some congratulations on the play call.
My least favorite is the burning memory of the game in Montana ending on Brian Quick's dropped ball; finished the game with 10 catches for 125 yards or something and was a man amongst boys all day. The blocked extra point by Illinois State would be worse if it wasn't expected. They had been getting penetration on field goals and extra points all game long, it was only a matter of time. I expect we were all so used to App pulling those types of games out that it seemed like a foregone conclusion the extra point would be made, and then it wasn't.

Re: Most memorable play ever?
Two more memorable plays:
Jalin’s last run in a App uniform continuing to fight for extra yardage while injured.
I was heavily influenced at the time, but have a memory of Richie Williams being escorted to the line of scrimmage for each play because he couldn’t walk. Think it was the championship game, but could have been a playoff. That whole year was a haze for me.
Honorable Mention: Creation of Grady Davis. I put this here because I believe it was a former player from the 90’s that concocted this play.

Biggest hit: LB Weslyn Hunter against Wake Forest in 2000, I believe. It made sports center for popping the Wake guy’s helmet up in the air.

Re: Most memorable play ever?
Speaking of big hits...Does anyone else remember the hit Marques Murrell put on the QB from WCU during the monsoon in cullowhee? I can’t remember the year, but I believe the QB was a transfer from S. Carolina. He had braces on both knees and decided to take on Murrell right in front of the WCU bench. Needless to say, the QB went flying, believe his helmet flew off. They basically rolled him off the field onto the stretcher and right into the ambulance.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 1:37 pmBiggest hit: LB Weslyn Hunter against Wake Forest in 2000, I believe. I can still see the water flying off his helmet when he got crushed.

That was 2006. I felt that was really AEs coming out game (for me, anyway). He did things in that game that no player had any right doing.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 2:01 pmSpeaking of big hits...Does anyone else remember the hit Marques Murrell put on the QB from WCU during the monsoon in cullowhee? Agree! Armanti’s family sat in front of us that game. Most on here were lucky enough to see him play, those that never saw him in person, it’s hard to describe. In my black and gold opinion the most explosive, dynamic, exciting, best college player ever. GO APPS!!BeauFoster wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 2:33 pmThat was 2006. By the midpoint of his Jr. year, I was never concerned about a 3rd and long play. AE most always had a way of finding the sticks.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 2:39 pmAgree! Re: Most memorable play ever?
Here is an oldie that I never hear mentioned. I'll admit I'm biased in favor of DJ. 1992, DJ Campbell threw for 3 touchdowns in the final 2 minutes at JMU to come from behind and win 27-21.
I'm working from memory since I am unable to locate a game recap, but as I recall the receiver was on the ground but caught the game winning pass as time was running out. Amazing finish by both the offense and the Defense who got us the ball back...TWICE.

Re: Most memorable play ever?
I really enjoy reading about the memorable great plays from Mountaineer football lore. However I must mention one that will forever be etched in my mind as one of, if not THE dumbest play call I've ever seen. I forget the year but we had the stink in KBS on a bright Saturday afternoon. We forced them to fumble on their opening drive and we proceeded to get close to paydirt. Joe Burchette was at QB (remember....about 6'4" and 240ish). We got stuck on 4th and chain-link on their 2 yard line. Our center was all-SoCon as well. As Yosef as my witness the booth called the fullback dive rather than the sneak and we lost it on downs. Everyone around us looked back at them and threw up our hands as if to say, "WTF???" Seriously....it was a chain-link to gain.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Most memorable play ever?
There have been a lot of great plays in App State history, we are fortunate as a fan base to have experienced so much winning football. That being said, no play has had as great of impact as Lynch's blocked fg attempt to seal the victory over Michigan. That one play did more for Appalachian State than any single other football play including those that allowed us to win our first title. The momentum from that victory propelled an increase in school pride, increased applications and higher admission standards, stadium expansion, yosef donations and eventually our move to FBS. While our FCS titles were awesome and they mean the world to all of us, as we know the vast majority of people don't give a crap about FCS titles. I can't think of another individual play that did as much for Appalachian State.
